The World's Address: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Buy Ethiopia

You're probably aware of that massive land reclamation development project called The World that is being built off the coast of Dubai. Well, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have reportedly plunked millions of dollars down for the island of Ethiopia.

PittjolieAgence France Presse reports: "The Hollywood couple intend to use the reclaimed piece of land to showcase environmental issues and encourage people to live a greener life, the Emirates Today newspaper said...Representatives of the pair in the US and other reliable sources had confirmed the purchase had gone ahead. But state-owned Nakheel, the firm behind the development called "The World", declined to comment, the paper said. The couple's two-year-old daughter Zahara was born in Ethiopia. Billionaire businessman Richard Branson and musician Rod Stewart are also reported to have bought plots on the development. Prices for the islands range from six million to 36 million dollars."

Watch for an announcement from Madonna today that she has dibs on Malawi.

UPDATE: Pitt's rep denies island report.

  2. Rich people are so funny! This is epically cheesy.

  3. ROTFLOL. Buying a private island that is man-made, half-way around the world, in a country that has to air-condition everything (including it's indoor snow ski slope) is one of the WORST examples of "green living" yet!

  4. WTF?

  5. I was actually unaware of such a project! The slideshow makes you wonder though...I'm afraid this is just another getaway for the rich and famous...I mean did y'all see those resorts? Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions but nothing screems "environment" in those pictures.

  6. This is just one of many projects like this in Dubai.
Correction: it is "created land" not "reclaimed land"

  7. I thought the same as Shane. How do they classify this as "reclaimed land"?

  8. How the hell are they going to showcase environmental issues on a man-made island?!? These projects are wreaking havoc on the Gulf.

Moreover, Dubai sucks! It's a backwards society masquerading as modern. Boycott Dubai!

  9. Not to mention the imported and abused labor force it took to build this and all of the other builing that's going on in Dubai. Shameful!

Land reclamation is either of two distinct practices. One involves creating new land from sea- or riverbeds, the other refers to restoring an area to a more natural state (such as after pollution or salination have made it unusable).

  11. Rich - this land is made from transported materials, hence my original comment. P.S. I work in site remediation and land restoration.

National Geographic did a good spread on these projects in Dubai some time last year. It is majorly going to fuck up water flow and quality in the gulf.

  12. I find it ironic that the Brad and Angelina are going to showcase green living here. A recent 60 minutes on Dubai and the U.A.E. talked about these projects and the fact that they cause massive environmental damage from the machinery used to the changing of the currents. Also they showed that while touring these areas that it was practically a ghost town. The super rich own these things and only visit maybe one time a year for vacation.

  13. In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, homosexuality is punishable by death. They might be careful who the invite over, their guest might lose their head.

  14. Why don't they take that money and buy the real Ethiopia? Just think how many starving people they could save as opposed to picking one baby from a flock and heaping wealth and pampering on just one so they can grow up to be a spoiled hollywood brat. Just a thought

  15. Too much money; insufficient brains. BP needs to reclaim his gonads. AJ used to wear a vial of Thornton's blood around her neck. She has obviously traded that in for one encasing BP's cojones. Stupid rich people gone wild.

  17. Angelina has one of the most beautiful faces in the world, but her legs aint sayin' much, are they?

  18. Somebody needs to get Angelina a sandwich. Damn, that girl's skinny.

  19. God I love Angelina and all her issues!

  20. It is pathetic that anyone would think this is helping the environment, when it's doing the opposite.

Why are celebrities always asking me to conserve and so on when they live in gigantic energy-hogging mansions, fly private jets, take limos, and so on?

    Posted by: | Nov 14, 2007 1:12:25 PM

  21. This is truly awful. They are supporting what is perhaps the most environmentally desrtuctive activity imaginable.

    This really takes the cake.

  22. Ethiopia is not an island

Posted by: James Poppinga | Nov 14, 2007 7:14:17 PM

  23. My opinion is that this is a big waste of money and nothing comes of it. Most celebs have no wherewithal or stamina to see something like this through. They throw money around and it dies. Celebs suck. I love Jerry's Seinfeld's take on actors and actresses. I agree wholeheartedly. A bunch of people blessed with luck and good looks who play dress up and everybody goes gaga over them.

  25. HAHAHAHAHAH. I know who is the greater fool - you guys for believing any Old rumour (out in late 2005 or early 2006) which has been denied by Brad and Angleina's reps as untrue.

BUT i suspect put out that by the dubai economic development board to try and lure some unsuspecting billionaire to buy an island.

another laughable rumous was some dubai hotel claiming that brad and Angelina flew in to spend a week at their resort when they were photographed the same time in Edmonton.
