ACT UP Slogan on Display at NYC's 'New' New Museum

Silenceequalsdeathneon

James Wagner takes a look at the latest treasure trove of art to open in Manhattan, the New Museum which recently opened its doors at 235 Bowery in New York City.

Writes Wagner: "This piece was my favorite continuing thing in the old New Museum, where it hung near the front door for years. This ACT UP/Gran Fury neon icon is now part of the Museum's permanent collection. It's been installed on the landing of the beautiful stair which descends through glass railings from the lobby floor to the level below, where the theater and Jeffery Inaba's installation, "Donor Hall" can be found."

Curbed also has a revealing report on the museum.

  1. Does anyone today remember what the ACT/UP "Silence = Death" campaign of the 1980's was about, or even care? It feels like AIDS has become so commonplace in our society.

Why does the local CBS affiliate here in RI continue to cut off the AIDS awareness commercials during CBS Sunday Morning, yet while watching "Troy" (ad nauseum), every commercial break started off with a male enhancement treatment?
