X-Factor's Rhydian: I'm Not Gay, But I am a Virgin

Rhydian Roberts, the favorite to win Britain's X-Factor show, tells the UK's Mirror tabloid that he's not gay, and that he's a virgin.
That sounds awfully familiar.
Says Rhydian: "If people are assuming that I am gay, or whatever, that is fine. They don't know me and I dress quite camp. But I can say categorically that I am 100 per cent straight."
On his virginity: "That is not saying that I can't have fun with a lady. I love the company of women. I have been offered sex, like most men. But if you believe in something you can't compromise. But I am only human and you can fall short. At the moment, my priority is singing. I am not a closet Christian. If someone asks me about it, I will talk about it. I do pray on Saturdays but then I pray every day. But what will be will be, it's God's will and that is a great mental attitude to have."
23-year-old Rhydian, who was formerly a rugby player, has a strict work-out routine: "I'm under no illusion - I'm no oil painting. My physique is alright, but visually I'm like the back end of a bus. I love working out - it's part of who I am. A lot of classical singers let themselves go - they're round fatties and I don't want to be like that."
AFTER THE JUMP, Rhydian's most recent X-Factor triumph.

1) Who?
2) I don't care about his sexual orientation.
3) I thought rugby players were supposed to have nice big legs?

And I thought pricks were supposed to stay in people's pants rather than pop out to comment on blogs.

His arms are kinda gross really. Not that that would stop me from letting him crawl on top of me or anything.
That's the thing I love about the Brits...even the straight guys can be gayer than luggage and it isn't a big deal.

Pretty voice, though I don't much care for classical singers trying to sing pop. It's the aural equivalent of trying to mash a square peg through a round hole. Give him 10 years of study and he might sound rather great. Not sure he'll ever achieve Nathan Gunn-like barihunk status...
What's with the hair?
Posted by: Brian | Dec 11, 2007 9:58:11 AM
Well he's obviously a raging roids head. That is quite a disturbing photograph...

don't think it's been done yet, but somebody should start the concession on "i'm not gay" t-shirts. they'd make a fortune.

Gay or not (and either way, 'EW'), vocally he's much like the European version of Clay Aiken - adenoidal, over-the-top, pretentious and in love with the sound of his own voice.

he also has acne scars, per the roid comment

Who knew? Those flambpoyant costumes always gave the impression that he was a twig

I bet he manscapes a blonde bacon strip.

I don't know about the steroids. Androgenic hormones have pretty significant effects on the user's voice, and I didn't hear any effects during his performance. He was able to produce a nice quiet floaty sount at the top range, and had good control of his pitch overall. Doesn't sound like steroids to me.

If he says he's not gay, then the case is close unless he's gay bashing in interviews, etc., but, thank goodness he didn't say he was a real blond, that dye job is just awful.

The second pic looks like he's looking for his ass. Like it was there just a minute ago?

Hello? Who cares? Okay, this guy is in Britain. He's not a gay-basher; he's just a young guy just trying to start his career. Why the hell should we care about his sexuality?
The only reason this guy is getting any play on this page is that he's handsome and talented. Why not speculate about Bob down the street or Juan at office?
This is just stupid and wrong. It's all well and good to play this game with the Larry Craigs of the world who do real damage to gays, but why this guy?

This man frightens me, a lot.
How come no one ever asks why the attention-grubbing celebrities care whether we think they're gay or not? How is wondering about that different than wondering who they're going to marry next, or whether they're married at all? Why is such speculation fine and dandy only when the framework is heterosexual?
Noah: People have it off, sweetie. Better yet, people talk about having it off, too. And if you look down the right hand side of the page, you'll find just a microcosm of the universe of folks gleefully sharing their tawdry little maunderings about Next-Door-Juan and Delivery-Boy-Bob. Don't forget to bring a towel.

By, "work-out routine," you mean "pill-taking routine," I'm sure. Okay, fine, you're right. I meant "injection routine," my bad.

Andy, I have to thank you for posting about Rhydian because it made me start looking up stuff on Leona Lewis. She's an amazing singer. As for Rhydian, sigh, he just doesn't do it for me. X Factor is a pop show and his voice is just too big for pop music. Somehow. . . . it all just doesn't work.

Two observations - Klaus Nomi, Alan Tracy
The Rhyddler is just an average popera singer in a very poor X-Factor season.
Do straight guys say 'lady'? Even in the UK? I'm confused.

All these shows are a calculated attempt to keep the old centralized distribution network in place in the music biz and it's failing miserably due to iTunes, etc.
I'm a virgin too, I've never had sex with a woman...

The reason he's having to discuss his sexuality is because the tabloids have made it an issue. Second para in that story:
"The flamboyantly-dressed singer has been the subject of rumours for weeks over his sexuality."
Rumours in other newspapers. And "flamboyant" being a clumsy tabloid wink. If you went back through other Brit rags in recent weeks you'd find gossip columns with the usual comments along the lines of "friends say they don't know whether he's gay or not". They do this all the time then make a big splash when someone is either forced to come out or issue a denial.

While I sympathize with him since he's a fellow blonde (bottle or otherwise), and realize that these days even 'straight' guys have sex with other guys for money or other reasons (drugs, etc.)....he's going a BIT too far with the whole 'virgin' thing....c'mon...who's he kidding?
As for the body....that's scary. A total roid queen. I'd rather be skinny and toned. He's a freakazoid.
Posted by: Jordan | Dec 11, 2007 2:05:02 PM
Why are all the homos so fascinated with this guy? He's not that hot, and his voice is not so remarkable. I'm not trying to be bitchy, I'm sincerely curious... am I missing something?
Posted by: curious | Dec 11, 2007 2:08:49 PM
Please can I have my twopenneth? What does it matter if his is straight or gay? He's an entertainer and I for one having been made to watch the show hope he wins. Leave him alone.

Get a life men. Rhydian isnt gay, doesnt take steroids - its just hard work at the gym and will no doubt revert to his auburn hair when he finishes with x factor. You are like a load of old women on here.

I'm from London, England, and I think Rhydian is flippin' gorgeous!
Posted by: Daelahny | Dec 12, 2007 5:59:04 AM
He is enigmatically gorgeous. I think he is maybe the full spectrum. I mean, he has a hard to get body, he is a stunning white blonde, and has talent. What more could I want? Is he gay? I guess that depends on what the definition of is is. XD

Okay kids,
There are very few men and may I say very few women that can sing. Take a look at most of winners of American Idol or for that matter Canadian Idol they can't sing with beans, most of them are an imbassement to the idustry and their collective countries. This man is a star and will be for a long time. To hell with what he does in his private life.
Just a thought.

Re all the roid comments, he was the strongest in class bench presser in the country when he was 13, I don't think he needs drugs.

Rhydian is at least equal to the best performers I've seen in above-average college productions.
