Spanish Gay Activists Rally Against Party Plans to Turn Back Rights
Spanish activists rallied outside the headquarters of the Popular Party's headquarters over the weekend, worried that if the conservative party wins the election on March 9, they will follow through with plans to reverse laws allowing same-sex marriage and gay adoption in the country.
The AP reports: "The Socialist government of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero legalized gay marriage in July 2005 and passed legislation allowing gay couples to adopt. The PP immediately appealed against the laws at the Constitutional Court and its leaders have pledged that if elected they will overturn adoption rights and downgrade gay marriage to a civil union. Protesters carried banners reading 'Rights are fought for. We are for a secular State,' 'No to religious dictatorship' and 'Democracy is a daily battle.' The PP is backed by Spain's staunchly conservative Catholic Church."

It would be so sad if the clock was turned back in Spain, esp. by the Spanish Catholic Church. You know, the ones that made inquisitions famous.

The sad thing is that so much GOOD has come from equalizing civil rights for same-sex couples in Spain. A good friend who is straight lives in Madrid and he says only positive things have happened since 2005 and believes that the reactionary elements in Spanish society (i.e., the Church and the Francoists) will go down in defeat. The majority of Spanish citizens support the granting of equality to gays and lesbians.
