Gay Podcasters Ben Harvey and Dave Rubin Now on TV

Those of you who can get Here! TV may want to take note - popular podcasters Ben & Dave make the leap from podcast to TV today with the premiere of their The Ben & Dave Show on the network. I don't believe the gay werewolf came with them, however.

A few clips AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. Ben Harvey is adorable, but frankly, they're a little boring. The posting on craigslist thing would have been a lot more interesting had they posted seeking some horribly twisted sex act and then seen who responded.

  2. A little?

  3. I fell asleep twice watching these guys. And while Ben Harvey is adorable, he's also heavy-lidded, which means that he, too, is as bored by himself as I am.

  4. OMG...I can't believe they went for the hackneyed 'LA is so plastic while New York is real' cliche. Yawn.

  5. Jack wants his GhettoTV.

After all, Ben and Dave are gay. What more could you want?

  6. It is clear that the 'critics' here haven't really listened to the Ben & Dave Show besides the clips that accompany this post. I discovered this show early on and they are hysterical, thought provoking and frankly not afraid to show themselves as they state their opinions.

Bravo to Ben & Dave...and before we all pass the gay judgement on this talented duo..may I suggest you listen in. You will be glad you me.

  7. Yes, I must say this show is a major snoozefest. They can be funny at times...but to sit through an entire show? I don't think so.

  8. You fell asleep twince in 5 minutes? I think you need to seek medical attention.

I love the B&D show. I am a Here TV subscriber and I am glad that I can watch these two in between Dante's Cove and the horny vampire show.

    Besides, they're damn cute.

  9. I jsut watched the Ben & Dave Show on Here and it was really good.

The clips attached aren't from the show...nor are they like the show. These are just web clips of some sort from their podcast.

I watched it and found it funny and the two of them adorable. But that's me...I'm a whore.

  10. I was wondering how long it would take before somebody at here! saw the negative comments and sprung into damage-control mode.

Love the post, "Glen." You not only shared your deep and abiding love for these dorks, you also managed to simultaneously plug a couple of other shows in here!'s riveting line-up AND remind us all to subscribe. Well done! You can leave your cubicle early today.

  11. I thought it was really funny as well.. Great idea though, bash everything.. Isn't that what the internet is for? Bravo, I can't wait to catch the next episode of 24Play's exciting life!

    Posted by: Wilton | Mar 14, 2008 1:12:38 PM

  12. Wow, got me all wrong. But you of course will say what you must. I watch the show and that's that.

    Besides, how's your TV show?

    Posted by: GLENFAN | Mar 14, 2008 1:13:47 PM

  13. I find them to be the best way to fall asleep around, even though thier Criagslist thing was a hoot, but, Dave Rubin, what a totally hot, sexy guy!

    Posted by: Sebastian | Mar 14, 2008 1:17:04 PM

  14. This isn't news. This is just more recycled crap from Here tv. These bozos already work for them so why wouldn't they want to promote the podcast with a quickly produced video segment on the channel?

So now instead of getting it free on the internet we have to pay for it? That's bullshit.

No different than any other cable channel trying to use their crappy podcasts to promote their crappy tv shows. Hello Logo?

  15. why is towleroad filled with such hateful commentary, especially when two of our own in the community are given the opportunity to do something good for the rest of us?

it's sickening to read these comments, not just on this post, but on any posting in which a gay person gets any sort of mini celebrity, whether it be lance bass, clay aiken, or your responses to these 'schmos.

apparently one can't say anything positive on here without getting slammed for allegedly workign at the network...but i work in gay media and have been following this show. if you pick up a copy of ENTERTIANMENT WEEKLY these idiots got a pretty nice shout out this week. can you say that for yourself? a mainstream media publication gives them the thumbs up and yet little RJ and CJ and peterparker like to hide behind their computers and diss because it makes you feel better about yourselves and your stereotypical queen ass lives?

from what i understand these are video podcasts and not representative of what is to come on the TV show. here! TV would be stupid not to be booking A list guests and turning this into something more. you really think they're that dense just to try to charge you for video podcasts? give me a fucking break.

the gays gotta stop dissing other gays. yes gay programming needs to step up...but give it time. it makes me truly depressed to see how y'all bring everybody down. anonymously. get a life, get a job, and be patient. better things may come to you...and us... after all we should be in this together folks.

  16. Just because you're being hired by Here TV to post this comment, doesn't make you right.

I think it's healthy to be critical of gay content, no matter where it comes from. It keeps us grounded and not falling into blind loyalty.

The emperor isn't wearing any clothes, and it's not hot.

Sorry, but most of Here TV and Logo programs/podcasts are junk. They are dilettantes in the world of gay media and spend most of their resources shoving their crap down our throats instead of producing quality shows.

They imitate instead of innovate. It's sloppy, obvious and derivative of better podcasts and tv shows.

I have no idea why they don't work with some of these established podcasts, bloggers or youtube guys and give them tv shows. Why do they need to hire the intern to do the dirty work?

Why don't they do like Bravo and actually create programs people want to watch? Instead of copying what other podcasts and tv shows are doing, why not come up with their own creative new ideas? These two companies are followers in a very crowded field, not leaders by any stretch of the imagination.

Who knows, maybe these guys would be good if they didn't have mama Here TV breathing down their necks. They seem very self-consioucs and awkward, and not in a good way. It looks like they just hired the intern to do the programs for free or next to nothing.

  17. These guys are boring. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

  18. I Love the boring snoozefest of recycled crap, that is The Ben and Dave Show!!

    Posted by: candipearl | Mar 14, 2008 9:11:25 PM

  19. Dear YOU'RE ALL NUTS,

I will be the first to say that I have, in the past, been unfairly critical of some gay performers here on the pages of towleroad. But I honestly don't bear any grudge against gay performers who have successful careers. In fact, I hope we see more and more and more GLBT people in the long as they are talented and represent the community well. I'd like to see more actors like T.R. Knight or Neil Patrick Harris. More athletes like Martina Navratilova and Billy Bean. More musicians like Melissa Etheridge. But I don't see any reason to heap sycophantic praise on someone when you don't admire their work.

I thought my comments about Ben Harvey and Dave Rubin were pretty innocuous. If they are in the entertainment biz then I'm sure they are already quite accustomed to having opinionated assholes (like myself) weigh in on their performance(s). It's likely they've heard far worse than what I posted. I'm also sure my comments have not changed their career trajectory.

The clips that are posted here were neither original nor particularly interesting. They weren't funny. They weren't clever. (Ben Harvey is, however cute. And they both have really nice radio voices.) The 'New York is so real and L.A. is so plastic' canard is a tired, pedestrian conversation more suited to mindless conversation between two twits at a bar on a drunken Saturday night than to a radio show that aims to be interesting and clever. And's more than a bit offensive to those of us who live in Los Angeles. I love New York, but if given the choice between the two cities, I would remain here in Los Angeles because I appreciate the green space (I have a YARD! With trees and everything!), hiking in the hills and canyons, the proximity to the beach and ski areas and the thoroughly relaxed pace. I find New York a little depressing, a little dreary, and far too confining. But I would never resort to disparaging an entire city with tired cliches. Especially if I was trying to run a podcast/radio show.

Sorry that I'm opinionated, YOU'RE ALL NUTS. But the upside of that is that you'll always know where I stand.

By the way, thanks for getting my name word, all lower caps.

  20. The controversy here is ridiculous, and seems like a fabrication to me in order to get people interested in a bland podcast to be for pay cable tv show.

    Posted by: WTF | Mar 15, 2008 2:49:59 AM

  21. agreed, the "controversy" is ridiculous. yes, the comments are innocuous. no, i don't work for the network. yes these guys are big kids and can handle the bullying. my point is give gay programming a chance before you knock it. these are podcast clips. they're launching a TV show. different things. every kid and his dog has a video podcast. a TV show has a producer and a show booker and people to make things slicker and less boring (hopefully).

my only point is don't knock down our own people...and it's no fair to compare these guys to neil patrick harris. different ball league, entirely different game.

that's all. go critique another one of andy's posts, since that's all that goes on here.

i'm done. gawker at least has amusing catty chat. this is boring catty chat about boring catty chat!

  22. TOOL! You are such a tool for HERE TV. Just because you say you're not, doesnt make it so. You know what I find boring? Ben and Dave.

Even this blog post is just a paid ad for the podcast/TV show. Not typical of the great content on Towleroad. (Someone at Here should give Andy Towle a TV show.)

The thing that gets me about Here and Logo with their lame attempts at podcasting, is they completely fail to realize what makes the popular gay podcasts good. Originality, creativity, heart, commitment, innovation. Qualities that Ben and Dave LACK.

I must admit I'm a fan of the Feast of Fools, The Daily Purge, Alex and Dean, as well as video bloggers like What the Buck and Scott B. These guys all have great promise and are all begging for peanuts to pay for their equipment, while these jerks in New York City umm and ahhh their way past another show.

They all take place in cities other than New York or Los Angeles. Maybe that's why the networks overlook them? It's not like they havent won awards. What the Buck and Feast of Fools both have dozens of awards under their belt and I would LOVE to see them on HERE/Logo.

    What is going on here?

These guys are the intern moving up in the ranks and the shows they produce are boring as hell. They don't have to try. Why the execs at these companies don't hire some of the already successful podcasters or video bloggers is ridiculous.

    Posted by: WTF | Mar 17, 2008 3:55:37 AM

  23. Not that I am a fan of Ben & Dave but Feast of Fools (Fausto?), The Daily Purge, Alex and Dean (realy? Motor homes, American Idol and going to the gym...) are all the same old shit.

Boring, boring, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...this is the same stuff...have you really listened to this waste of time?

At least this moves this format to a TV show...but first let's eat our own.

Everyone sucks, everyone is boring, everyone is less than. We all here can do better.

Hey Andy...damn your posts...your audience can do better.

  24. So does anyone have any info on why The ben and dave show has been completely wiped off the face of the earth? There myspace and facebook and all their links on here! are gone.

Someone must know what the drama is about.
