road.jpg Syphilis rates surge, especially among gay and bisexual men: "Since 2000, when the national syphilis rate sank to a low of 2.1 per 100,000 people after a decade of progress in the 1990s, the rate has soared by 76 percent, the CDC reported. Homosexual and bisexual men accounted for 64 percent of syphilis cases in 2007, up from about 5 percent in 1999. CDC officials expressed concern not only because the recent increases in this bacterial sexually transmitted disease follows years of declines, but also because syphilis can elevate a person's risk of being infected with the AIDS virus and the odds of giving it to someone else."

road.jpg NYT: Sex diseases in gay men escaping detection because people are ignoring regular testing. "Dr. Kristen Mahle’s study found that among gay men who showed no symptoms of gonorrhea, more than a third of rectal infections with the disease, and more than a quarter of throat infections, were missed because many were not tested at all anatomical sites of recent exposure. Dr. Eric Tai’s study surveyed non-H.I.V.-positive gay men in 15 cities from 2003 to 2005 and found that only 39 percent reported having been tested for syphilis, and only 36 percent for gonorrhea."

road.jpg Pair of lesbians in Greece hope to become first same-sex marriage there by exploiting a legal loophole: "The two will try to tie the knot under a 1982 law that does not specify that a civil union must involve a man and a woman, said Evanguelia Vlami of Greece's main homosexual association, Olke. The ceremony is to take place in the Kessariani quarter of Athens by a mayor who belongs to the radical left-wing Syriza party, Vlami said. 'I have no objection to celebrating this union so long as the law is respected,' the mayor, Spyros Tzokas, told the Ta Nea daily."

road.jpg Washington governor Chris Gregoire signs bill expanding domestic partner benefits: "The measure adds domestic partners to sections of laws where previously only spouses were mentioned, including areas referring to probate and trusts, community property and homestead exemptions, and guardianship and powers of attorney. 'This bill is about protecting and helping Washington families,' Gregoire said before signing the bill. 'It simply gives these families the same rights as everybody else. It's the right thing to do.'"

road.jpg Catholic bishop alleges 'gay conspiracy' against the Church, longs for the good old days when gays were thrown in the clink: The Bishop of Motherwell, Joseph Devine, says a 'homosexual lobby' has aligned itself with minority groups, including Holocaust survivors, to gain persecuted status. He said there was a 'huge and well orchestrated conspiracy' taking place in the 'gay movement', which the Catholic Church neglected 'at our peril'...In an attack on openly gay actor Sir Ian McKellen the bishop said: 'I saw actor Ian McKellen being honoured for his work on behalf of homosexuals, when a century ago Oscar Wilde was locked up and put in jail.' He made the comments during a lecture on 'Christian faith and inconvenient questions' in Glasgow on Tuesday and has since stood by them, 'These groups are defending their position, I am defending mine', he said. 'It is all about a lifestyle alien to the Christian tradition. There is a giant conspiracy against Christian values, an agenda here.'"

  1. David probably would have stayed another week if he lkeft his eyebrows along and had sang 'I saw HIM standing there" instead of "i saw HER standing there." It woulda been more convincing than his over-the-top performance of a simple song on tues night.

  2. So David Hernandez, the boy who stripped at gay clubs was voted off American Idol last nght. He certainly was not the worst singer of the bunch. So that means that 14 year old girls who vote on the show are pretty homophobic. Otherwise they would have kept him in the competition for a while, since they normally love cute guys. I guess society and young people are not as evolved on gay rights as we sometimes think they are.

  3. ...conspiracy against Christian values,

Yeah the gays are behind the gowns, the Prada Shoes worn by the pope and his minions (not that they are forced to wear them mind you) and the gaudy gold shit everywhere in the Vatican.

The money could have put christian values to work in action, like duh, feeding the poor.

  4. Yeah his eyebrows were making look like a sad EVIL QUEEN... guys really .... dont kill your masculine good looks by plucking your eyebrows. The rule is to slightly trim them with scissors if needed.

AS FOR PROVINCETOWN'S EVIL POLICE CHIEF
YEAH .... I can drop my personal boycott!!

HOWEVER --- remember be safe a gay man was almost MURDERED there by STRAIGHT SUPREMIST thugs and the town barely cared at all and left him to wander offf with brain damage!

  5. James Dobson should be worried. Let's hope their views die with them, and evidence suggests that history will see them as the desperate relics they are.

I'm not sure how much David's stripper past figured into his elimination; likely some. But a good share of the 14 year old girls on AI forums insisted Danny(!) was straight, so clearly their gaydars aren't the best. David's biggest mistake--other than not being as cute as some of the other boys, not exactly in his complete control--was forgetting he was meant to do diva songs and thinking he could pull off some uber-het sex bomb shtik. It backfired, rightfully so.

  6. Hey Dobson I have an idea, how about the Rev. Ted Haggard. I hear he's all cured and may even be off the meth. I'm sure he'll be all forgiven, you know how kind you 'christians' are. Just in time before you go join Farwell downstairs.

  9. There has been an huuuuge spike in the number of men I treat with syphilis. The unusual thing is that they've all known better, and they all got it anyway - I've actually been impressed by the sophistication of their medical knowledge. And...most of them have only shown up during the secondary stage of the disease, when it is somewhat unattractive in a appearance.

I don't think it bodes particularly well for a renewed push for more education of the gay community, but we'll see.

  10. I resent the notion that gay men are at increased risk of venereal diseases. It's just another way of demonizing gay men in general. What the authorities should be saying is that it is promiscuous, sleazy gay men who are at increased risk, and not gay men in general. I am sick and tired of gay men in general taking the blame for diseases that are spread within a small sub-culture of the gay community, a sub-culture which shows no moral restraint in its expresssion of sexuality.

  11. can we just silly-it-up a bit and say that he is one hot, mexican "chulito." i normally don't follow AI, but i watched and wept when his bodacious ass got booted.

    ------------------
You resent the notion? Do you read the papers or the original post? The numbers do not lie. It is not just "sleazy gay men" who are at risk, it's men, women, and or a soon to be ex-Governor, who did not like to wear a condom. The papers yesterday reported that 1 in 4 young teenage girls has one or more STDS. How do you know the 'gay man in general' you slept with was not with a sleazy one last night?

If you look at the figures it is all people who are having unsafe sex, gay men were just doing better when AIDS was new, and we saw friends die. Sadly the young kids today do not know how real that is or that there is treatment, but it's not a cure. Then there is the Crystal Meth and other drugs adding fuel to the fire.

Get some facts Jason, it's not meant as a slam to you or us gays, it's a wake up call.

  13. Hernandez was horrendous and naff and well deserved to go. But the boy Archuleta made a right pig's ear this week too, forgetting the words several times. Is he the youngest looking 17 year-old ever? He still rocks though. And David Cook - but someone tell him he's going bald and to get over it.

  14. rivendell,

what does "naff" mean? nevermind. when your whole post makes sense only to you, why should we bother?

  15. It's interesting that the domestic partnership bill in Washington State flew under the radar there. But in any case, a much belated congratulations to our friends in Seattle.

The law enacted by the legislature and Gov. Gregoire this week finally brings Washington in line with its coastal neighbors with regards to recognizing same-sex relationships. It includes the 170 rights of marriage that wasn't included in last year's more hyped (but limited) domestic partners legislation.

Oregon and California already have comprehensive domestic partnerships that grant all of the state-level rights and responsibilities of marriage. While British Columbia has full same-sex marriage.

  16. I'm glad that there's a broad base of stories included in this wrap-up, but if anyone in the straight mainstream media had put the headline "Stripper from Dick's out on American Idol" in a recap, we'd be beyond mad. The guy made it there on his talents, and whether it was homophobia or just America's discomfort with male strippers, got sent home before people much less talented. If he is gay (which he hasn't come out and confirmed), we shouldn't be helping the mainstream media knock the guy down. How many of us would have been able to be fully out on national TV when we were his age (and man, now I feel old having typed that).

  17. Hey Nic,

Naff: British slang, today meaning uncool, tacky, unfashionable, worthless... or as a softer expletive.

Sorry you don't understand my english - maybe it's because I'm English...

  20. I often heard my LGBT friends on http://www.bimingle.com talk about Syphilis rates surge . Yeah, in order to have a healthy and happy life, we LGBT need to know more about the health.
