And the scientists who have conducted the study fear that insects' ability to repel enemies and attract mates may also be impeded."

Re: Raymond Burr, his foster kids, and Leland: there's not a chance in hell he'd have been allowed to have foster kids had he been out. So I think the tradeoff is worth it.

Raymond Burr wasn't the only closeted man on TV. Will Geer (Grandpa on the Waltons) was survived by a long-time dear companion (Male). It was the way things were done then. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a number of actors in the same closet today.
