Paula Abdul Critiques Song That Hasn't Yet Been Sung

Imho, the only moment from last night's American Idol worth repeating.
She must be taking psychic pills now!
For those of you who missed it, Paula proceeded to critique Jason Castro on both his performances even though the contestants had only done one song.
Abdul told The Insider: "It got very confusing ... the producers come up to us in the dark and said, 'We are not going to have you guys judge after each performer, we are going to have all the performers go once, then twice and at the end critique them.' I am feverishly trying to write notes for every performance...I was trying to give my critique for Jason Castro, and scribbled Jason's name, and that was David Cook's! ... We all just screwed up everything. This is live television. This is fun!"

i busted out laughing with this. at any moment i think the words "i love puppies" is going to randomly fly out of her mouth.
HOWEVER... if she is anything like Simon (i know i'm going in for a stretch here), she could have watched the rehearsals since all the judges have admitted they cannot hear the performances very well during the actual taping...
I have a feeling we will be hearing THAT excuse today and less about her Percocet use.....

So, is it a fix? Was she revealing something from a script?

Hilarious!!! Paula is high, Randy reverts to the same old "pitch problems," and Simon, well he's just Simon.
I rarely watch AI, but I did catch it last night, and it was a hoot!
And that David Cook is arrogantly hot!

That was a fuck-up of Quiz Show proportions. She was clearly reading from a script provided by the producers. It may not be fixed, but it is certainly swayed toward specific contestants. Which is a shame because Syesha was amazing last night, but it's obvious the producers want Cook and Archuleta in the finals.

Actually if you happen to read the story on idol in the times last week, its likely that at the time Paula made her remarks, two songs HAD been sung. Idol toys with the moniker "live" quite freely. I understood her flub as revealing the contrived nature of the evenings proceedings.
If you think idol is "live," search the times and read the article. It is staged to the nth degree....AND prerecorded in many spots.

I work in television and let me tell you, nothing about reality television is real... it is all scripted to some degree with the outcome pre-determined... but it shouldn't detract from the joy of watching these train wrecks. Last night's Paulagate and Monday night's DWTS's Musclegate are the unscripted reasons why these shows still work.

I don't know about the American version, but on the Canadian version the contestants sing the songs twice. Once for the judges so they can critique it, and once for the show where the critique is then revealed.

It is likely that Paula saw the dress rehearsal. I have noticed that the "recap clip" of each performer shown at the end with their phone numbers is not from the same performance that was shown during the "live" broadcast and is probably from the dress rehearsal. I don't think the contest is fixed or that the outcome is predetermined, but I can understand that the producers may not want a Melinda Doolittle or Chris Daughtry situation where the best singer of the year is voted out early and Idol is stuck with a "winner" like Taylor Hicks that it is forced to support and promote.

but she looked FABULOUS! What else really matters?

I am so happy for Paula. She survived the 80's and is looking and doing great. All the haters wish tey survived with half as much looks, money and good drugs. I wish Paula the best. As for American Idol, it is clear the explanation is correct- the show is taped and looped and pieced together. Live- not at all.

In the Idol world this is a major scandal, but really, how big is the Idol world on every night that's not Tuesday and Wednesday?

Since I'm away from home, I had to watch the performances on YouTube, so I missed Paula's ability to forecast the future. I'm doubting the rigging theory, because to succumb to it would be to give up the last speck of virginity I own.
Anyway, here was my take on the evening, minus the brouhaha:

I WORK MY ASS OFF JEFF!

Heck, Simon would critique a song that wasn't even written yet!

The judges make preliminary notes at the dress rehearsals. Big deal. No story.
And Christian, you just pop up everywhere like a bad penny, don't you?

All props to Paula for having a doctor that prescribes such inventive drug interactions!

When she started talking about his SECOND song, I thought I was in THE TWILIGHT ZONE or I had had a stroke! I was glad to find out she had spaced-out instead!
