Gay Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson Talks to Matt Lauer

Gene Robinson appeared on the Today show and spoke briefly with Matt Lauer about misinterpretations of the Bible and homosexuality, his disinvitation from the Lambeth conference and his plans to attend, the rift in the church, his plans to enter into a civil union, and the difficult time he had his partner and their two daughters (pictured) have gone through.
Said Robinson about why he wears a bulletproof vest: "When you try to love the world the way that God loves the world, you're going to get into trouble."

I don't believe in god, but I do believe in Matt Lauer. But seriously, it's really nice to see/hear this kind of discussion aimed at middle America. And to have Mr. Lauer having this calm, cool, respectful conversation with the Rev. gives it even more impact.

I am a Christian and an Episcopalian. The church of my youth, the Presbyterian Church, does not want me as a member, because I am gay. In my 20+ years of post-closet life, the most hatred that I have experienced has always come from those who call themselves "Christian". I think there is a different label for them that more accurately describes them, "christofascists". I do not think they represent the love of God or of Jesus Christ. I love my adopted church, and I believe I am treated equally in the eyes of my bishop, my fellow church members and my God. To those nominal Episcopalians who choose to separate from the American church and align with an African church, I say "there's the door. God be with you."
