Michael Stipe's Bronze Gods are Technological Objects of Change

Stipe

Fashion designer Rogan is opening a new boutique in New York, and New York magazine reports that R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe will be having something of an art show there, exhibiting some bronze sculptures he did of cameras and music devices. Said Stipe:

"The radio alarm clock … changed forever the fragile state between sleeping and waking, allowing you to wake to your favorite radio station … The polaroid [one shot and sx70] revolutionized photography by providing instant images available to anyone … Cassettes provided portable, compact music, altering forever the influence of radio as the individual became their own disc jockey."

The objects are not for sale but if you go on the 27th you can pick up a Rogan Stipe T-shirt.

  1. The Rogan collection looks like stuff they already sell at Target. I'll never understand why people are willing to pay big bucks for stuff they could a)buy for a lot less at any "lowly" all-purpose store or b)make themselves (like Rogan's screened and cut-off tees).

  2. Speaking of the fragile state between sleeping and waking...YAWN!

  3. Apparently, I have a ton of "art" in my attic. Who knew!

  4. Another example or creations (whether it be "art," "fashion," "design," etc.) that would receive zero attention were it not for the designer.

Thanks for your brilliant insights, Michael! You are SUCH a deep thinker!

    Go back to sleep.

  5. It's a good thing for Michael Stipe that he can sing. Cause his sculptures are not very imaginative.

  6. Paul R hits the nail on the head.

Thousands of artists have produced work that easily eclipses this crap, but because they aren't famous rock stars, their work will remain hidden while his wastes space at some fashionable NY boutique.

"Gee, I think I'll make a mold of my calculator and then make up some bullshit concept to fit it and sell it as art. Oh wait, I have to be famous for something else first. Doh!"

  7. Hi Rogan, congratulate your fashion sense.

Rogan Gregory is rewriting the rules of ecofriendly fashion. And as the next designer to collaborate with Target on its Go International series, he's about to achieve household-name status, another rarity in the sustainable-style realm.
