Morrissey Commands Boys to Leap with his Magic Tambourine

Moz1

Morrissey just came out with a new video for his single "All You Need is Me" which I find somehow hypnotic. Maybe it's the bright colors and cheerful sunniness that seem so different from his usual gloom, or maybe it's that v-neck he borrowed from Simon Cowell, but I think it's more likely his harem of acrobatic bandmates.

Watch it, AFTER THE JUMP...

  6. With an opening bass riff that sounds as if it could have been dropped by The Fall, it's nice to hear Morrissey move away from bland, mid-tempo self-absorption, and into some kick-ass, rocking self-absorption.

Note to Moz: I'm donating a brilliant idea to you: Reform The Smiths (to wild acclaim, of course), set up an extensive US tour, then cancel each gig only moments prior to taking the stage. C'mon, it would be hilarious!

  7. John C, Morrissey is no longer coy about his sexuality. He's admitted to having a long-term boyfriend (of 10 years, though they've since split). I admit that his vague, Michael Stipe-like prounouncements in the 1980s and much of the 1990s were extremely annoying (though clearly BS). But he admits to being a big gayola now, and it's reflected in his lyrics.

Carlos, can you explain the fascination that Mexicans and other Latin Americans have with Morrissey? I saw parts of a documentary on the subject, but it was very poorly made and I had to turn it off. Not to mention, it provided very little analysis of the phenomenon.

  8. @ Paul R

Can you point me in the direction of where/when Morrissey admitted to being gay? As far as I can gather he has never actually said it - he is still very ambiguous about the whole subject. He admitted to having a 2 year relationship some years ago but omitted to mention the gender of the person in question. In an interview for the NME a couple of years ago, he said that he was no longer celibate but would say no more than that and whenever asked about his sexuality, he always gives the "my sexuality is irrelevant" line...much like Mika..

  9. I think it's funny how far we have gotten away from actually making beautiful art driven music videos!

Now all you do is have over a bunch of cute boys and film it in your backyard.

Remember the 80s? When music videos were like movies of a band? Taking you to someplace invented and mythical?

    Hmm.

  10. @Br!on

Uh, remember when people actually 'bought' records. And record companies actually backed the bands they signed. Those days are gone, honey. When you're making the video out of your own bank account you tend to keep it under the $5 million mark.

  11. I love this man. For a few weeks now, I've been listening to his songs Human Being and Ganglord and A Song from Under the Floorboards as often as I can. What a great songwriter & talented guy!

  12. The closest I can come to saying anything bad about the man is: This video is not useful. That is all.

  14. It's funny that people generalize Morrissey as being depressive and whiney when I have actually always loved him for being a great comedian. He has this unique way of making life sound like a joke with a dry punchline. All of his albums have atleast one song that is plainly "boo hoo, I'm lonely", but the others are usually more than that. I love "The More U Ignore Me" for the line "I will be...at the bar.......with my head...on the bar." Awesome stuff.

  15. He's vaque about his sexuality in an age when people like Michael Stipe have come out, because it still doesn't matter. He has no intention of dating you or marrying you, why must everything be spelled out? I think he's a good example of a songwriter who's lyrics could really go either way and who benefits from that kind of mystery. He's whatever you need him to be. Straight men can cheer for and empathise with him if he's a straight man. Gay men can fantasize about and also empathise if he's gay. Honestly, as a gay guy I have always assumed him to be gay but nothing would surprise me.
