Obama's First National Ad Begins Airing Today

Barack Obama's first national ad begins running today in 18 states: Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Virginia.
AmericaBlog notes: "Bush won fourteen of the states on that list -- all except Michigan, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Those other fourteen have been red states -- John McCain really, really needs to win all of them. This year, they're all in play."
Watch it, AFTER THE JUMP...
TRANSCRIPT:
"I'm Barack Obama.
"America is a country of strong families and strong values. My life's been blessed by both.
"I was raised by a single mom and my grandparents. We didn't have much money, but they taught me values straight from the Kansas heartland where they grew up. Accountability and self-reliance. Love of country. Working hard without making excuses. Treating your neighbor as you'd like to be treated. It's what guided me as I worked my way up – taking jobs and loans to make it through college.
"It's what led me to pass up Wall Street jobs and go to Chicago instead, helping neighborhoods devastated when steel plants closed.
"That's why I passed laws moving people from welfare to work, cut taxes for working families and extended health care for wounded troops who'd been neglected.
"I approved this message because I'll never forget those values, and if I have the honor of taking the oath of office as President, it will be with a deep and abiding faith in the country I love."

Is Barack Obama the only black person in this minute-long ad?
Posted by: Graham | Jun 20, 2008 12:57:50 PM
I loved that ad, but yeah, GRAHAM, i do think he was the only black person in the ad. That being said, I really do think (with all sincerity)that the ad was the most sincere presidential ad I've ever seen. "If I have the honor of taking the oath of office as President, it will be with a deep and abiding faith in the country I love." That's some humble shit right there.

Matthew Yglesias over at The Atlantic paraphrased this ad as, "My Mom's White! And I'm From America!"
And sadly, given all the widely circulated, emails making absurd claims about Obama and his background, this is exactly what the man needs to be doing in order to build a comfort level among low-information voters.

you go, boy!
if this were any other election cycle, i might be picking nits over barack's about-face on campaign financing; over his message of "change" while he loads himself with former clinton administration advisors; and over this blatant cozying-up to white america. but it seems that he and we have learned from the duplicity of the repugs.
although obama will continue to crush mcshame in fundraising, let us not forget that the rnc has deep pockets for the general election. the dnc does not. and though both candidates have disavowed the 527s, there is nothing to prevent another swift-boating of a fair-minded dem.
we, as a party, have to hit back hard -- quickly and relentlessly. no more mr. nice guys. please, mr. o, keep leading a brilliant campaign.
it bears repeating till it becomes rote: the supremes, the supremes, the supremes!!! mcshame admires scalia and roberts. obama admires souter and ginsberg. obama respects the constitution. the repugs want to put it in the shredder. 'nuff said?
