Obama Campaign Highlights McCain's Flip-Flops, Memory

The Obama campaign is pointing out McCain's recent flip-flops and confusions in a new memo:

"The self-professed candidate of 'straight talk' and 'experience' spent today changing his position on gay adoption, adopting Senator Obama’s position that we need more troops in Afghanistan after having resisted taking that position, flip flopping on whether he’d send U.S. or NATO troops (he actually offered three different explanations on where those additional troops would come from), and referring to a country that hasn’t existed since 1992 for the second time in two days."

That country would be Czechoslovakia. According to Think Progress, "This is at least the fourth time in the last year that McCain has harkened back to the old days when the Iron Curtain divided Europe."

And an old joke McCain once made about rape surfaced yesterday:

"Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, ‘Where is that marvelous ape?’"

  1. Yea, the Czech thing sounds a bit like living in the past, but it's a little understandable to mix up countries, especially ones that seem to change their names every year or so. But I've never understood the whole "flip-flop" thing, for either side. Shouldn't a candidate be allowed to change their mind? If someone we didn't like had a position we were against, and stuck to their guns, we'd say they were stupid and stubborn. But if they have a change of heart, or some evidence shows them to be wrong, etc., and they do a 180, then they're "flip-flopping" and that's bad.

Oh well, I never claimed to understand politics. Don't think I want to.

  2. McSame is such a mess! I am so shocked how he has flip flopped so often and so quickly! And the whole Czechoslovakia thing is really out of control - for a man who says he has such great experience, I can't believe he keeps doing this!

  4. Boy, those Czechs are lucky! If McCain doesn't know where your country is he can't declare war on you! Wahey!

  5. Calling it Czechoslovakia doesn't mean he doesn't know where it is, it just means he's old. How can we judge. It was called that for the first 80 years he was alive or something. :)

It's like Pat Buchanan said, the difference between a flip flop and simply having your view change with time on an issue is that the latter is something you do and the former is something your opponent does.

  6. Chris, that was 1992, not last year. this is not "understandable" from a guy touting his vast experience as necessary to our foreign policy.

  7. Just following in the footsteps of Bush, who on at least one occasion confused Slovakia with Slovenia.

    And people say we're Euro-centric!

  8. Chris and Banne

Czechoslovakia ceased to be a country 15 years ago. 15 years ago. Not a year ago. 1 time could beunderstandable, but 4 times over months after aids would tell him the acts= senile old coot

The worse thing for mccain is being tossed under te bus by bush on talkin to enemies.

The white house has anounced that it will send to official o listen to the talks between ran and europeans in geneva next week. No preonditions! Not a face to face talk but a move in the Obama foreign policy direction. The stuff Obama was called a nazi aout by bush.

  10. How is that "joke" at all funny? I mean forget how offensive it is for a second; there is nothing in it to even make you *think* it deserves a laugh.

  11. Re: Chris' question about flip-flopping:

I always thought the difference between flip-flopping and changing your mind is intent. Changing your mind implies doing some mental work and reflection on where you stand on an issue. Flip-flopping means that you are trying to respond to the flavor of the moment and get as many people on your side as possible.

  12. Is it possible that John McCain is already dead and...you know, reanimated?

Has the Great Zombie Incursion already begun?
