  1. And I love Chris Matthews. Well, not THAT way, but still.

  2. I'm as annoyed as anyone with Chris Matthews loving on Republicans and disrespecting gays, but in this case I don't think he was clarifying that he doesn't gay-love the governor. It looked like he was making a feeble feint toward a semblance of journalistic objectivity. But in the end he decided it was OK to say he likes Crist, which is where he always ends up with Republicans.

  3. What I thought was way more interesting was Crist's staffer's obvious discomfort with the whole thing--he "enjoys" her?!? Don't they realize they're playing with fire here? Please, please, if there is a God, let them nominate him for vice president.

  4. I oppose McCain as much as the next thinking person, i.e., a LOT, but I don't think it's fair to describe that ad as "attack[ing] Obama's rhetorical skills." It says concerning that only that "beautiful words" are not solutions to problems. Maybe that constitutes a jab at his *rhetoric* but not an attack on his rhetorical skills.

But the issue the ad raises is not an unreasonable one. Speeches are one thing, progress on seemingly intractable problems altogether another. All you have to do to find proof of that is look to JFK's relatively thin record of actual accomplishments in his (tragically truncated) presidency. Love the man, think he was an inspiring leader and great orator, but he was not on his way to being a particularly accomplished president.

That aside, McCain's as is, one way or another, a sort of pathetic attempt by a weak campaign to make inroads against Obama. As Hillary showed during the "who did more," MLK or LBJ fiasco, in January, when all you've got in your arsenal is criticism of your opponent's power to inspire people, then you're really flailing.

McCain is toast and deserves to be.

  5. How regularly do you watch Hardball and/or the Chris Matthews Show, PAT? While it's obvious he doesn't have the same distaste for Republicans/conservatives you and I do, I don't believe he favors them. They say he's too easy on Dems/libs and Dems/libs say he's too easy on them. I've always gotten the impression that he just respects and admires political prowess regardless of what side it comes from.

And he disrespects gays? Have you ever heard him talk about gay marriage? He's got one of the most sensible and eloquent takes on it I've ever heard from ANYONE.

  6. well all mccain's got to offer is 5 1/2 years of pow and christ knows what kind of torture they did to her which no doubt left scars on her for life so i certainly don't want some pow psycho for pres besides the obvious reasons so gimme beautiful words any old day nothing wrong with that ask shakespeare

  8. Chas, I watch Hardball quite a lot, the Chris Matthews Show not so much. I know his employment background, but it is my impression that he is a culturally very conservative person. It is also my impression that he is almost always respectful and deferential to Republicans and conservatives and is often snide and dismissive with Democrats and liberals. Maybe he overcompensates for his background, maybe he's become a political conservative, or maybe my bias skews my perceptions--I'm just telling you how I see him. I find him appealing at some level and keep watching the show. He obviously knows a lot of people and knows the game, and he's upbeat and enthusiatic. I just don't think he plays it down the middle. I can't say that I've heard him articulate a position on gay marriage. If you can point me to it or describe it here, I'm genuinely interested.

  9. Chris Matthews WORSHIPS power of any kind. Power from corrupt public officials, celebrity newsreaders or from a Transgender dominatrix. I doubt he’d give up lusting after Trannys for Christ.

  10. Notice how reluctant McCain is to use his POW time in a campaign ad. And as Wesley Clark had the guts to ask, how exactly does that qualify him to be President?

    Posted by: Kevinvt | Jul 8, 2008 6:30:44 PM

  11. Well, looks like McCain is going to try and run (somewhat) on his military/POW experience. I think that makes it fair game. The truth about his SHITTY record needs to be exposed for all to see!

    Democrats, attack!

  12. Mocking change, that worked pretty well for Hillary McDouche bag and I voted for her. Keep it up, and PLEASE pick that closet case, or Mayor 9/11. Man is this a piss of an election. Who made this shit up??

Oh and while the 'flower children' were getting high on love, you were bombing children. Nice.

  13. A quick thought on the summer of love thing in McCain's ad.... Obama isn't old enough to have remembered much of that, let alone participated in it. Desperate fuckwads.

  16. Just when I think I've got Chris Matthews figured out he does something totally opposite of the expected. I watch "Hardball" daily and can usually determine the lead story at least an hour before the show. Matthews is an Irish Catholic who previously worked for at least two major Democrates. That said he seems to be more moderate than liberal except for his very strong stance against the current war. For me, as a progressive liberal Democrate I really don't see him leaning heavily toward the right. To me he appears more as a fiscal conservative and a social moderate but I do think aspects of his middle class Catholic background plays heavily on some of his "rantings".
