Argentina Passes First Nationwide Gay Rights Measure
Same-sex couples have been granted the right to receive the pensions of their deceased partners provided they have been cohabiting for at least five years:
"The government's national decree will 'put the rights of all cohabitants on a level playing field,' Boudo said. Gay activists welcomed Monday's announcement as the fruition of years of campaigning the government to grant them the same rights as heterosexual married couples. Gay civil unions already are legal in five cities, including Buenos Aires. The measure is 'historic' and marks a 'step forward' for human rights because it is the first nationwide gay-rights measure approved by the government, gay activist Pedro Paradiso Sottile told The Associated Press."

Before we all get too excited, it should be pointed out that given the poor economic track record of the regime down there, inflation has eaten away the value of most pensions--not to mention the weakness of contract law there in general.

Thanks for posting news about Argentina. My partner & I love Buenos Aires & are considering buying a 2nd home there. It's so easy & comfortable to be ourselves there. We look forward to their continued progressive policies.
