First Look: Democratic National Convention Stage

Stage_2

A Towleroad correspondent working at the Pepsi Center in Denver sent us this exclusive look at the main stage for the Democratic National Convention. Pretty snazzy.

Many of you readers who are going to be at the Convention have reached out to us. Again, if you have interesting stories or know of events next week in Denver we should know about, please give us a holler. Also, if you have interesting photos please send them along as well. We look forward to seeing you there.

  1. I almost expect Sharon Osbourne and The Hoff to be sitting at a judges table alongside it.

  2. politics as entertainment!!!

  3. You mean the actually allowed towleroad correspondents in? The didn't heed the words of nutjob and deny you access, because you advertise underwear and jockstraps next to the fur wear pope and allow nasty comments?

  4. Is Regis Philbin going to emcee? Now THAT would be surreal.

  5. This looks like American Idol or the Oscars. The right already accuses the left of being "too Hollywood". This will not help.

  6. It looks like the set of a Janet Jackson concert.

  7. Looks great even though a wee bit Hollywood, and, I look forward to your comments on how the whole convention goes, and, sightings of cute guys :).

  8. Unbelievable, that in the face of "celebrity" attacks they'd go with an American Idol /Star Search theme.
Horrifyingly and increasingly it seems the possibility of McCain as President will be indeed a reality, with special thanks to these dimwitted jackass democratic party planners.

  9. it looks amazing!

  10. Uh guys, I don't think most people will notice or care about the set design. Chill.

  11. Subtle and understated. In a Liberace kind of way.

    Posted by: protogenes | Aug 22, 2008 11:40:21 AM

  12. Yea they should have just went with a green screen like McCain.

The set design looks neat. Better on hallucinogens.

  13. Hmm add a couple of smoke effects, Obama descending from the sky...yeah pretty much fits what's been going one. This is going to be hilarious to watch. You can't blame them for effective lighting though... George "Looney" Clooney won't stand for it. Thankfully though the hair dressers have sighed a relief because Ms. Fluff It couldn't keep his pants zipped and has been told not to come.

  14. Isn't that Cher coming up from the floor??

It's look cool. I like it.

Do the repugs have "9/11, 9/11, 9/11" plastered all over theirs?

    Posted by: Tralfaz | Aug 22, 2008 12:09:58 PM

  15. I do see a theme though...Democratic National Convention: Style Over Substance.

Posted by: Las Vegas | Aug 22, 2008 12:09:58 PM

  16. It's a fucking convention! What do you want it to look like? McCain's green backdrop?

    Posted by: H | Aug 22, 2008 12:12:28 PM

  17. "Do the repugs have "9/11, 9/11, 9/11" plastered all over theirs?"

That's so 2004. This year they have P.O.W.! P.O.W.! P.O.W.! written all over it.

  18. HYPOCRISY on display (as usual).

How GREEN is that edifice? What's the Carbon foot print? How much fossil fuel is being consumed? Are the lights CFL? Mercury free? How much OIL was used in making the plastics and other portions of the stage? Is the lumber formaldehyde free? Did they use union labor? I hear food is banned so "hardworking Americans" will be captive to concession stands.

It looks like American Idol meets the Politburo or maybe Nuremburg. Talk about a gross display of excess!

  19. Oh look it's B.O.'s American Idol stage. He loves being a celebrity.

    Posted by: Nobama...no thanks | Aug 22, 2008 1:38:20 PM

  20. Simon Cowell is going to sue for trademark infringement! I can just see it now, Ryan Seacrest standing there between Barack and Hillary, saying, "Well, one of you has to go home tonight, America has voted!..."

  21. Oye...the naysayers are getting all Cokie Roberts on us. What were you expecting? Hay bails?

I don't see a problem with the DNC wanting to put on a good show for the attendees. This is a nice facility -- I say why not take advantage of newer technology. Is it a bit slick? Yes. But I'm sure they aren't going to have ALL of those lights on all of the time.

There is no doubt the Republicans are going to be just as celebratory. But there isn't enough dramatic lighting in the world to hide all of that oogly.

I'm sure John McCain will be lowered to the stage in a plane with "authentic battle damage". And Cindy McCain will make her way down like Natasha Henstridge in Species...hissing and crab like.

  22. Steven W it is because they have lost already via housegate and have nothing better to do than back bite on set designs.

  23. Looks like a drag queen mega church, to me.

  24. QUEENDRU: Have you tried Teh Google? They've worked hard to reduce the environmental impact of the convention: http://www.demconvention.com/greening-the-2008-democratic-national-convention/ . They're diverting 85% of their waste from landfills. They're using biofuel powered buses, hybrids, and public transit to transport people. All their contractors used environmentally friendly material (e.g. non-toxic glues, low VOC paints, recycled carpet). They're going to give materials away after the convention so that they can be reused. And of course they used union labor.

Stop being a concern troll bitching about this fallacy or that.
