Gay Man Stabbed Leaving Leather Party in San Francisco
A Sacramento man leaving a party in San Francisco's Mission District that was being held in conjunction with the Up Your Alley leather fair was assaulted and stabbed by three men while three women looked on, police said:
"According to police, the victim had just left the Bay of Pigs party held at the New York Studio space at 535 York Street in the inner Mission around 3:30 a.m. July 27 and was walking along Mariposa Street when three men, believed to be Asian, assaulted him while three women, also believed to be Asian, watched. 'They punched him; they stabbed him; and they left him for dead,' said San Francisco police Inspector Brian Danker. The suspects stole the victim's wallet, and Danker said he believes they targeted him due to his sexual orientation. 'I do think it is a hate crime. He didn't need to be beaten or stabbed the way he was. No one deserves that,' said Danker. "'The brutality of the attack is a hate crime; that is my story and I am sticking to it.'"
The man, who was not identified, was wearing a t-shirt and jeans at the time, and managed to make it back to the club where the party was being held. He is reportedly in stable condition at home. Police are appealing for information.

"No one deserves that" ...not even the homosexuals!

He wore a t-shirt and jeans to a LEATHER party?!

If he was just wearing a t-shirt and jeans and was walking alone, I wonder why they thought he was gay?
That's a sketchy area, and I would never walk around there alone at 3:30 am. (I could tell it's sketchy even if I weren't from SF.) And without meaning to sound racist, I'm surprised that the attackers were Asian. The area is far and away dominated by Latinos; I rarely see Asians in that area...but maybe Asian gangs are fighting Latino gangs now. Not exactly my area of expertise.
This is why I always take cabs. Even if you drove in from out of town, if you're going to a sketchy area you should park somewhere safe and cab it. Especially if you plan to drink!
And no, none of this is meant to blame the victim.

Paul R, you are mistaken. This area is not sketchy at all. There are 2 other major "venues" there at Florida & Mariposa however that have events that sometimes attract a bridge and tunnel crowd of assholes from San Jose. But I live right by there and its a great area. We have the Universal Cafe, the Slo Club, Blowfish Sushi, Cafe Gratitude, Atlas Cafe and on and on all within these few square blocks -- actually its long been known as the coolest hood in the city. Now several blocks south, closer to 24th street and on toward Cezar Chaves, the Latino gang bangers and stupid housing projects do present a problem. I agree with you about the Asian thing though -- you never heear about Asian guys and their girlfriends here whaling on much of anyone or anything except maybe an b+ on their otherwise perfect report cards.

Whoa Now, I didn't mean to sound insulting. But as you say, that area varies considerably every couple blocks. By day and early evening a lot of it is lovely. But I wouldn't want to walk alone from, say, SF General to 16th and Alabama in the middle of the night unless I stuck to Portreo and 16th. Whereas I'd feel safe walking eight or so blocks in most other areas. Again, I'm not trying to be rude, but I've seen some nasty things on, say, Alabama St.

Whoa Now, every neighborhood that you live in will long be known as the coolest hood in the City, right?

Evan,
You make me laugh with that tunnel and bridge crap and assholes from San Jose! We think the same thing about the trash from San Francisco coming down to San Jose. By the way........San Jose is the 10th largest city in the nation and SF is 14th and dropping like a rock. perhaps because of assholes like yourself who deny that SF has a homeless and thug problem that the SF Chronicle tends to hide on back pages so tourists won't be afraid to come to that nasty dump and spend their money. one quarter of SF is dangerous in the daylight and over half is worse after the sun sets. Acknowledge that SF is a dump and getting worse and you are halfway to the solution! A big earthquake to finish the job off!

Jim,
San Jose is nothing more than an overgrown suburb. Even if it were the largest city in the country and San Francisco were the 50th, San Francisco would have more character, charm and history in a single block than San Jose could muster in all of its relentlessly monotonous suburban office park/strip mall/tract house setting.

Jason,
Amen.
You couldn't pay me to live in San Jose. I've hated it on the few occasions I've had to visit.
And Jim, I would hardly say that the Chronicle covers up SF's homeless problem. There's an article about it on the front page of the main section or Bay Area section pretty much every day. I'd also love to know the "half" of the city that's dangerous after the sun sets. And the notion that San Jose is being overridden by SF visitors is beyond laughable. Civic pride is one thing, but you're totally delusional!

Jason,
If character is defined as homeless people sleeping on your sidewalks, people with mental problems wander your streets, people living in the bushes in Golden Gate park, random sex in that very same park in those bushes, and the sweet, sweet smell of urine on your sidewalks.........you are right.......SF has more character! You win and as your prize you can keep that shit hole know as San Francisco.........and as for strip malls? Do you not have the same stores as we? Best But, Bed Bath Beyond, Macy's Target? Perhaps they look different in the urine smelling fog!
