Gov. Jindal to Reauthorize Discrimination Against Gays in Louisiana

Louisiana residents will once again face the threat of being fired from their jobs for being gay or lesbian when Governor Bobby Jindal allows a 2004 executive order made by former Gov. Kathleen Blanco to expire this Friday:

Jindal"We are not going to renew it and that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody. The reason for allowing the order to lapse is that I don’t think it is necessary to create additional special categories or special rights. We are firmly and strongly committed to fair treatment of all of our people and certainly don’t condone discrimination in any form."

Blanco's order added sexual orientation to a list of areas covered by discrimination laws, including race, religion, gender, national origin, political affiliation and disabilities.

Said Baton Rouge businessman and former state Revenue Department secretary Joe Traigle in a statement: "Jindal, for the sake of economic development in Louisiana, should reissue the non-discrimination executive order so that the sign below Louisiana can again read ‘everyone welcome.’"

  1. If it wasn't for the "special rights" put in place by the civil rights act of 1964 Jindahl would most likely be working at a 7-11.

  2. Not all Christians are ignorant! I am a gay Christian man.... Don't lop us all into one stupid grouping..... By doing so, you aren't any better than than Jindal....

  3. What an ass. Why is it that so many minorities here are MORE conservative than where they came from? Did he not experience any oppression while growing up? The guy is a walking contradiction. He has a degree in biology but advocates Intelligent Design? I wish all republicans would just fall off the face of the earth. And xtians do suck! Over and over and over again and NEVER swallow. And please spare me the 'you're just as bad as they are for being intolerant' crap.

  4. This ugly monkey man is pig. A total bigot mean spirited asshole republican, when you combine third world minorities with southern republicanism you get the ugliest form of government. The republicans in the south are the most disgusting form of american gov we have and the least free or fair. Dont spend a dime in this cesspool of a state other then in the gay french district and the garden district, the rest of the state is a hell hole for all kinds of bigots.

  5. But, wait a minute, KevinVT, Derrick from Philly has made it VERY clear that we're not supposed to bring up a person's skin color when we criticize someone's homophobia! Didn't you get the sermon from on high?

  8. Banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is a two-way street; what is required here is a high-profile job termination of a straight employee (doesn't matter if the employer is LGB or straight.)

When the worker is fired, the point is clearly made that the action isn't due to their race, religion, gender, national origin, political affiliation(s), or disabilities.

They are being pink-slipped/downsized because they're straight. Then let's see village idiot Jindal blather on about the creation of additional special categories or special rights.

    Fire a heterosexual.

  11. I'm confused regarding what the original executive order covered, as you'd need to pass legislation to cover private employment. Did it cover only government workers?

  14. I hear you, Queen. You might say he's completely vindaloony! (Sometimes it's too late in the day to be properly outraged.)

  15. WOW, I never EVER seem to have this kind of opportunity when it comes up, but my spouse and I were actually making plans to visit New Orleans this October for a vacation and also to spend a couple of days seeing friends of ours who live there.

But now we are not. I just told my man about this and we decided on the spot that we'll meet up with our friends in another city another time and instead choose a better state in which to spend our tourist money this Fall.

  16. Ok, LOL @ Vindaloony. I know it's wrong.

  17. OMG! I thought Jindal might be different because he was younger. What was I thinking!?! I'm actually embarrassed I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

  18. Conservative Republican politicians are generally against anything related to "gay rights". Gov. Jindal's color/nationality has nothing to do with the fact that he is a conservative Republician politician doing what conservative Republican politicians generally do.

    Posted by: elg | Aug 22, 2008 5:07:18 AM

  19. Why is anyone surprised by this? He's an orthodox Catholic who ran as, and has always been, a far right-winger. Folks like that generally aren't supportive of queer folks, and would prefer to see us disappear.

It's not like it's pandering when politicians like Jindahl and McCain are actually the bigots their policy positions indicate. We need to get over the notion that people on the right are somehow "well meaning." They're bigots.

  20. That’s odd, the Gay Republican supporters aren’t commenting.
    What’s wrong boys?
And I do mean “boys” because obviously you Gay Republicans won’t man-up to your party’s hate-mongering.

  21. And this guy is a potential VP candidate.

I want to believe there is a hell then I can ask Jindal to go there.

  22. So, when it expires, doesn't that mean all the straight people will have special rights?

  23. I think his mind's f@#$%'ed up really bad...
