McCain: Proud He Helped Deregulation, Says it Was 'Helpful'

The New York Times reported yesterday that John McCain campaign manager Rick Davis was paid nearly $2 million over the course of five years by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac "to defend them against stricter regulations."

Davis_mccainThis revelation came to light as "the McCain campaign stepped up a running battle of guilt by association when it began broadcasting commercials trying to link Mr. Obama directly to the government bailout of the mortgage giants this month by charging that he takes advice from Fannie Mae’s former chief executive, Franklin Raines, an assertion both Mr. Raines and the Obama campaign dispute."

McCain told 60 Minutes last night that he's proud he was one of the Senators who helped pass deregulation in 1999.

Said McCain: "I think the deregulation was probably helpful to the growth of our economy."

  1. before the mcshame appologists toss out 1/2 truths

-1999 Gramm-Leach-Biley ACT (mcshame voted for) revoked the Glass-Steagal Act (FDR era regulation on banks, mortgage companies, and insurance companies)

BIG cause of all of this

    YES, Bill Clinton signed it

BUT!!! What the repubs don't like to mention = half truths

Bill Clinton could have gone on national TV and wiped his ass with it, but Gramm-Leach-Biley Act would still have gone through because the repub majority had a veto proof vote on it

  2. Not that I'm a fan of McCain, but in 2005 the Senate voted down stricter controls that would have prevented Fannie and Freddie from putting so much into risky investments. The votes were on party lines.

And everyone received money from Fannie and Freddie. Nobody should trust any politician in my humble opinion.

  3. To be objective and fair and truthful, McCain proposed legislation in 2005 to in fact provide stricter regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac but the Dems blocked it.

Senator Barack Obama, number two on the Fannie/Freddie list of favored politicians after just four short years in the senate.

Freddie and Fannie used huge lobbying budgets and political contributions to keep regulators off their backs. A group called the center for responsive politics keeps track of which politicians get Fannie and Freddie political contributions. The top three U.S. Senators getting big Fannie and Freddie political bucks were democrats and number two is Senator Barack Obama. Now, remember, he has only been in the Senate four years but still managed to grab the number two spot ahead of John Kerry, decades in the senate, and Chris Dodd who is chairman of the senate banking committee. Fannie and Freddie have been creations of the congressional democrats and the Clinton white house, designed to make mortgages available to more people, and as it turned out, some people who couldn't afford them. Fannie and Freddie have also been places for big Washington democrats to go to work in the semi-private sector and pocket millions. The Clinton administration's white house budget director Franklin Raines ran Fannie and collected 50 million dollars. Jamie Gurilli, Clinton Justice Apartment Official, worked for Fannie and took home 26 million dollars. Big Democrat Jim Johnson, recently on Obama's VP search committee has hauled in millions from his Fannie Mae C.E.O. job. Now remember, Obama's ads and stump speeches attack McCain and republican policies for the current financial turmoil. It is demonstrably not Republican policy and worse, it appears the man attacking McCain, Senator Obama, was at the head of the line when the piggy's lined up at the Fannie and Freddie trough for campaign bucks.

  5. Is Same-Sex Marriage Ban in CA Tied to Obama Factor? Interesting piece from yesterday's New York Times by Jesse McKinley:

"Could Senator Barack Obama’s popularity among black voters hurt gay couples in California who want to marry? * * * That is the concern of opponents of Proposition 8, a measure on the November ballot that would amend the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage, which was legalized in May by the State Supreme Court. Mr. Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, is against the measure. But opponents of the proposed ban worry that many black voters, enthused by Mr. Obama’s candidacy but traditionally conservative on issues involving homosexuality, could pour into voting stations in record numbers to punch the Obama ticket — and then cast a vote for Proposition 8."

  7. And yet, what McKinney and the race-baiting HOGB fail to note is that in exit polling in states that have had marriage bans on the ballot, African American voters have been more likely than whites to vote against the damned things.

  8. Thank you, MAJEFF, SCIENTICIAN & JOHN in the Big Apple.

These right-wing homos are always lyin' on us. NOt all black folks are Bible-thumpin' evengelical fanatics. Those are the ones who are told by their pastors to come out and vote against gay people's rights. They are not the majority.

  9. HOGB, you are only allowed to come her if you are up Obama's ass.

If you prefer HRC, McCain, a third party candidate or just don't like Obama you are a self-hating, mentally retarded, Nazi sympathizing, mentally unbalanced, racist troll.

  10. You know what is too funny?
Even before you read the comments to post like this, you know what half are going to start with.
"I am not a fan of McCain but..."
"I am a Democrat to my bones but..."
"I love Obama but to be fair..."
    "I support Obama but..."
" Obama is a friend of mine but..."

Don't your but's hurt? They at least must be very tired.

These are nothing more than Tucker Bound's wanna-be boyfriends who troll sites like this hoping to win brownie points with their favorite closet-case du jour

  14. DAVE,

every group in America other than well-off white Protestant men has had your above comment said to them: Irish Catholics, African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Chinese-Americans (our west), and now Gay Americans. There may be a little truth in what your saying, but not enough not to participate. It gay people hadn't got politically involved you could be in prison right now for "butt f...kin'" (I don't feel like using vulgarities on Andy's blog today. I'll save that for when we discussed Ms Baked Alaska again.)

  19. I don't see anyone in the flyover states worried about this because it doesn't really affect them yet. This is the rich bailing out the rich here. Gas prices are what people are complaining about. McCain and Obama and the entire senate are in this so deep that were this really a hot button issue, both sides attacking each other would be MAD (see Cold War) and Bob Barr would be elected president.

  20. OOPS!

pretty much seals the deal, no?

    McCain "proud of deregulation"
    Deregulation cause of crisis

    ergo: McCain cause of crisis.

I don't listen to trolls anymore trying to change the subject. The subject is: this economic crisis was aided and abetted by McCain. Just keep repeating that over and over for the next 40 or so days.

  21. "Surveys taken around the nation and in California indicate that large percentages of African Americans disapprove of gay marriage and support a constitutional amendment banning such unions. A national Gallup Poll last month found that more than half of African Americans favored a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. A Los Angeles Times exit poll showed higher percentages of African Americans than whites or Asian Americans voted for Proposition 22, the 2000 initiative that defined marriage in California as between a man and a woman. And a Field Poll of California voters last month, taken after San Francisco began offering same-sex marriage certificates, suggested that African Americans resist gay marriage and endorse a constitutional amendment against it by wider margins than other ethnic groups."

  22. OK troll...which of the states here show African Americans being more likely in '04 to ban than whites:

    http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/ballot.measures/

They're pretty equal, but whites were more likely to support ballot measures than were African Americans.

No CARL, ANDY and most here do not mind dissention, most here just hate you GOP Log Cabin trolls, who chose to come here to taunt us in the majority, who see you and McShit & Palin for what they are.

As for killing thinkers, that would obviously exclude you and your lot. Though against the death penalty I would lose no sleep if God dropped a tree or house on your sorry ass.

By the way, as JIMMYBOY and others here will back up, I was for Hillary, but Obama is a great second, compared to McDouche, who would not even make the top ten. Palin? She does not even make the list for dog catcher. Dog shit yes.

  24. HOGB:

For every one instance you display that African-American's are homophobic, I can reference dozens that state just the opposite:

"In spite of widespread assertions of homophobia in the black community, new research shows increased diversity in the politics, attitudes, and identities of younger blacks. This paper shows that college-aged African Americans are likely to have more positive attitudes to gay politics. These positive feelings and greater temporal distance from the civil rights movement makes this generation more likely to support analogies between gay rights and civil rights."

    http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p_mla_apa_research_citation/1/0/4/5/2/p104520_index.html

“I appeal to everybody who believes in Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream to make room at the table of brother- and sisterhood for lesbians and gay people,” she said on August 1, 2002."

    -Coretta Scott King
    http://www.gaypeopleschronicle.com/stories06/february/0203063.htm

"And a funny thing happened on the way to the ballot box in the last presidential election. When constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage were on 11 state ballots in November 2004, blacks in Arkansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio and Oklahoma were at least one percentage point less likely than whites to vote for them, according to CNN exit polls. Only in Georgia were blacks slightly more likely to vote for the amendment. (The remaining four states had too few blacks to make a meaningful comparison.) "

    http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-stewart14-2008aug14,0,7258583.story

"Contrary to conventional wisdom, African American and Latino youth are more supportive of extending equal protections to gays on housing, employment, and hate crimes than whites. And majorities of these young people, although less intense, support civil unions, marriage, and adoption."
