  1. It wasn't a gaffe. It was very obvious what he meant, which is why he appeared surprised when George "corrected" him. But of course it's already being spun as a gaffe by the fear-mongers, so it will become yet another issue that should be a non-issue.

And I agree absolutely with Jeanne Cummings. If anything, the media has treaded too lightly with Palin. If the Dem's had someone with extreme views and family scandals on the ticket, you can bet the Repub's would be relentlessly peddling it to the media. We shouldn't shy away from attacking Palin where she's vulnerable (her views) while not forgetting that McCain is the main target. (Hillary, today, wisely refrained from getting in the cat-fight the media is hungry for.) Obama was tarred as being a hollow celebrity, when really it's Palin who's fitting this bill.

  2. I LOVE me some Rachel Maddow!!! Lying liars they are!

Here's my response to the wingnutdaily, which took Obama's "gaffe" (which wasn't one) as an unwitting confession.

"What Obama said was “McCain has not talked about my muslim faith” – which means it wasn’t McCain who was smearing him, but instead blogs like this one [the wingnutdaily]. Indirect speech doesn't mean that the thing in the quotation is true. It’s like Palin saying “Obama has not talked about Trig being my grandson” – it was blogs that did that. No statement there about whether or not he is in fact her son. Native speakers of the English language should be able to understand this. If I said, “you have not talked about my belief in unicorns” that does not mean that I believe in unicorns, just that you haven’t talked about it.

But it wouldn’t surprise me if commenters [on the wingnutdaily] did believe in unicorns. They seem to believe lots of things that aren’t real.

  5. It's not a gaffe. It's not a gaffe. It's not a gaffe. Anyone who reports it as a gaffe should be ashamed of themselves (no offense, Andy)!

  6. Morgan - are you "my" Morgan, the one who hasn't done so much but has done so recently? Anyway.

Kinda have to agree with you (although it's highly possible that what II'm agreeing to is not what you intended). It wasn't a gaffe as I saw it; it seemed he was referencing that McCain himself had not been calling Obama a Muslim or playing the Muslim card. But the "correction" to me seemed to be hyperaware of the need to reinforce that he is Christian, which ultimately made the exchange seem even more awkward (wish the dude wouldn't stammer so much; then again, as someone who stammers, I can relate to having a speech challenge characterized as incompetence - which leads to more pressure and more stammering).

  7. Obama needs to realize that middle America is pretty stupid - they like sound bites and slogans and flashy things that make noise.

Why Democrats want to keep touting lofty ideals and lengthy policies is beyond me - play simple and play dirty. As someone mentioned, Republicans don't know how to govern, but they sure know how to run campaigns.
