Vancouver Gay Basher Appears in Court

One of a group of men involved in an anti-gay assault on a gay man on Davie Street in Vancouver over the weekend faced a judge Monday.

Kandola"Michael Kandola (pictured), 20, of Vancouver, appeared in Vancouver Downtown Community Court Monday accused of assaulting Jordan Smith, 27, of White Rock...However, Crown counsel Andrew Cochrane told Judge David Pendleton that the assault "was not a community court matter" and Kandola was ordered to appear in provincial court today. Cochrane said information was being prepared concerning new charges against Kandola that would have to be dealt with in provincial court. The assault charge could be upgraded to assault causing bodily harm or the more serious offence, aggravated assault."

Smith was slated to have surgery to repair his jaw on Monday that would require it to be wired shut for up to six weeks. Law enforcement authorities have urged that Kandola be charged with a hate crime, which would allow for heavier penalties.

Kandola was released from custody Saturday. He left the court with his head down and left in a waiting vehicle.

  1. Look closely at this guy. Could he look any gayer? Talk about someone struggling with his own sexuality. Proves, to me at least, his failure to accept his own homosexual feelings. When I was in high school one of the worst of the bullies often belittled other guys as fags and cocksuckers. It was no surprise to run into him two years later in a gay bar with his new boyfriend.

  4. On a totally vapid level, he should be incarcerated for that jacket. (I didn't realize that Members Only was still in business.) Those eyebrows are more carefully tweezed than Bette Davis' were. Further, that hair looks like a squirrel crawled up on top of his head and died... it's either a horrible toupe or else he needs to use that pent-up rage to take a rock and kill his hair stylist.

This is the man who proves the point that Philbert just made. We hate in others what we most despise in oursleves.

  5. I live in Vancouver (two blocks from where this assault happened) and went to high school with Jordan.

This attacker looks like a typical bridge & tunnel homophobic airhead, who doesn't *actually* live in Vancouver, and who might have a an expensive sports car as a facebook profile picture.

  7. My gaydar is clanging and whooping bigtime, like the rest of you. The self-appointed policemen of a social standard are always the closest to violating it themselves (see Joseph Goebbels, the dwarf ghoul propaganda chief of Hitler's Aryan Nation).

Also, the guy looks South Asian to me, possibly Muslim. I wonder what his heritage says about gays? No wonder he looks proud and smug in the photo. All his peeps back home are cheering and hollering that he is a good *insert name here*... Prison time would probably give him higher social standing and make the dumbasses around him think he's as straight as an arrow.

    Throw the book at him.

  10. I live in Vancouver as does Ambrose and frequently you will see three or four young Sikh men "cruising" around in their cars on weekend nights down Davie Street looking to cause some trouble. I myself have been a target of abuse just waiting in the lineup at the Pumpjack...of course the number of troublemakers increases exponentially after a Lions (football) or Canucks (hockey) game when the testosterone really gets going. The police say there is no relation to race and gay-bashing but you will have to try hard to convince me otherwise, you don't see gangs of Chinese or Filipino boys ganging up on gay men.

  11. I would guess mullet-boy's hatred stems either from the usual fear and ignorance, his own repressed feelings and/or self-hatred or he is taking some kind of religion to the extreme here. Either way, he's toast, because nobody's going to want to take him on and employ him after this in any trustworthy capacity in the city, he'll just drift forever. He's dunzo. Plus, that mullet is downright 80s and needs sorting.

IF, he's genuinely sorry, does some hard work to make up for it and attempts to make amends/friends then there MAY be hope for him (plus also obviously a haircut).

Obviously the most important thing is the victim gets better and goes onto better things too. Good luck to the guy who was attacked and hopefully things will get back to normal for him soon.
