Arizona Same-Sex Marriage Opponents Raise Millions

Arizona needs help.

ArizonaflagA measure amending the state's constitution to ban same-sex marriage may very well pass there given that the measure's supporters have outraised those against the ban by millions of dollars:

"Figures released Thursday show the campaign in support of Proposition 102 has raised $6.9 million. That’s compared to the roughly $355,000 raised by the measure’s opponents...A recent statewide poll found that 49 percent of those surveyed would support the proposal. Forty-two percent said they would vote against it, and 9 percent were undecided. The poll was conducted by KAET-TV and Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and has a margin of error of about 3 percent."

  2. Arizona has always been a conservative state, and a bit behind the times. Aren't they they only state in CONUS that doesn't change clocks at daylight savings time?

  3. hmmmm, would somebody please explain to me where all this money goes... looks like the anti-gay foes know what to do with the money but what about the pro marriage people... millions go to them and now this... is it in somebody's gay swiss bank account...

  6. Stupid QUEEN. Mormons are huge in AZ, too. Especially in cities like Mesa.

  7. The ad playing on the television show a Hispanic/Italian looking couple getting married and the announcer stating "Keep marriage simple." The top donors are Mormons from Mesa (four couples have given over $100k each).

  8. wow it boggles the mind that people will raise money to fight something like this, and we live in a world where people die daily from lack of proper nutrition and clean water..... if your so holy and enlightened, why dont you go help gods people who are suffering, instead of creating more pain.

  9. also as a side note, it would be really interesting if the gay people of america up and left, and went to more friendly places like canada( who i know isnt perfect) i think people would be shocked to see how much uglier the world is without us( gay people being responsible for much of the art and beauty in this world, does your ugly wife need my hairstyling help YES SHE DOES!)

  10. Am I the only one that sees this whole "raising money for or against gay marriage" thing as idiotic? WTF is the money for? Posters? Websites? Bullhorns? Pencils? Rainbow colored wacky waiving inflatable arm flailing tube men?

I understand that it's an important issue, but I really feel that we could just individually give time to fight for or against it and use the money for something a bit more valuable. I'm sure I'm not the only one that needs money for college so I can make more than $30000/yr and give back to the economy by purchasing a car, a house, a Russian orphan, and a fancy sub-zero fridge with glass doors like the one on "Cooking For Real".

REALLY? REALLY? How about AIDS research or autism? Personally, I want the benefits of domestic partnership, but not at the cost of giving that much money when others are in far dire situations than even my po' ass.

  11. Brain, you are NOT the only one! I am COMPLETELY DISGUSTED at how we are having to purchase our civil rights with these initiatives. Such a waste of valuable resources that could be spent on LGBT outreach and education, gay elderly, gay-straight alliances, etc. There are a million better uses for our hard-earned money.Neither presidential candidate is willing to treat our families and children equally; "We don’t exist" in their constitution. Fine. So when they ask for taxes, we will reply "no" - we don’t exist. When our children and families are treated equally, we will pay EQUAL TAXES.

    Not a penny until then.

It boggles my mind how we lack so much self-esteem and respect for ourselves that we bend over and take it, paying our slave taxes, and not even AWARE how tax compliance sanctions this very discrimination!INSANITY.

  12. Dear The Queen,

But you are wrong my dear! There is a large, influential Mormon community in Arizona. They, in fact, are one of the driving forces behind Prop 102.

  14. BRIAN, JOHN and THE QUEEN,

The money donated to No on Prop 8 is largely going to TV commercials. CA is one of the most expensive states in which to purchase advertising. If you don't live there, perhaps you haven't been seeing the constant stream of lie-filled commercials the other side has been running.

BRIAN, I'm glad you 'want the benefits of domestic partnership,' but many other gay people believe that DP is akin to second-class citizenship, 'separate but equal'. The U.S. government, other governments, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and countless foundations are funding research on AIDS and autism. These campaigns fighting anti-gay marriage amendments are funded by grassroots donations from GAY PEOPLE and their friends. No one else is gonna step up. If we all work hard volunteering and giving what we can, in CA at least this will be a one-time deal and after Nov. 4 we can celebrate our victory and go back to focusing on all the other important issues of our time.

JOHN, with all your talk about taxes, I would venture you are a Republican. I, for one, and many others would probably say there are more important issues than your vague diatribe against 'slave taxes'.

LIKE EQUAL RIGHTS FOR GAY PEOPLE IN THE LAWS OF OUR COUNTRY!

It is SICKENING that THE QUEEN and others are spreading LIES about the campaign here in California that is working to defeat Prop 8. Everyone I know has seen the No on Prop 8 ads. They are running on prime-time TV shows like Heroes, as well as The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, in addition to cable news networks.

It will be great after Nov. 4 when you magically DISAPPEAR from this blog, with no more election-year work to be done shilling for hateful bigots. They weren't here before, what makes anyone think their out-of-place commentary will be here once the polls close? Mark my words, watch as all these trolls disappear on Nov. 5.
