Beautiful People Debuts on the BBC

Beautifulpeople

Via I am a TV Junkie comes this preview clip of the new BBC series Beautiful People which I mentioned last week. The show is based on Barney's Creative Director Simon Doonan's memoirs of his youth.

Looks like a lot of fun. AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. I downloaded the BitTorrent of it, it's well done. I'm probably going to get sick of the "wacky" family members, especially the blind auntie, but it's got some funny moments. In any case, Samuel Barnett is totally adorable as the adult Simon, it's nice to see he's doing something besides "The History Boys".

  2. First, thanks for the link Andy.

Second, I watched it last night and it is wonderful. Funny, energetic and has all of the feel of the books despite the story being reset in the 90s.

Olivia Colman is wonderful, the kid who plays young Simon really gets it ... for me, it made me feel the way I imagine straight guys felt watching The Wonder Years.

Which is really interesting in that I was nothing like Simon as a child, but I must have been just like him inside and just repressing it each time I pulled on my little league uniform.

It does so much so well.

Problem here? No US distributor yet. I think that's where we come in. If you see it and love it (or don't see it and want to and you're not good at the alternative means of watching UK TV) write a note to HBO or Showtime to pick it up.

Great fit, in my opinion, at either of the cable nets. Or, if they must, basic cable.

  3. Saw first episode and it's a riot. I love Kyl(i)e's character. You're right, Joe, I've had a different upbringing as well but a lot of it (feelings and soundtrack!) ring very true and close to home somehow. I'll keep watching.

  4. I'm just watching the second episode - it's tremendous fun, and one of the gayest shows I've ever seen.

    Dog bless BBC2.
