Orange County Couple Attempts to Barricade Their Marriage

Occouple

Peggy and Terence Carey's marriage must be really, really fragile because apparently they feel the need to barricade their entire home with "Yes on 8" signs.

Actually, their life must be very, very empty and certainly not Christian if the thing that fills it most is the desire to take away the rights of others and write discrimination into the constitution.

  1. *sigh* Fruitcakes. Well, you know how those heteros are, marrying one minute, divorcing the next! They need a license to marry, plus church and family approval. Their friends even have to provide gifts. They need all the help they can get!

  4. I think the Mormons in southern California printed more Yes on 8 signs than people were willing to put on their lawns.

I live in an 80/20 Republican neighborhood with many Mormons. There are some Yes on 8 signs on people's lawns, but it corresponds to the percentage Mormon as far as I can tell. Still there's a lot more Yes on 8 signs than McCain/Palin signs. I've only seen 3 "No on 8" signs.

As for Peggy and Terrence, they are the same people who stood in front of buses carrying black children to white schools in the 1960s and 1970s. Let's hope they don't turn violent.

The Yes on 8 people are pulling out all the stops on TV and internet advertising. We need more television advertising for No on 8.

This is so important. If we can't defeat 8 in this heavy democratic turnout, we are facing a protracted fight.

  5. We've allowed our legal fight for civil rights to turn into an American Idol contest. I wonder who will "win"?

How about, "Whomever wants to vote on my civil right to marry can go ahead and pay my federal income taxes as well".

You cannot vote away my right to perform civil disobedience when the situation is as dire and unconstitutional as it is NOW.

  6. Peggy is probably scared shitless that Terry will join the other team if Prop 8 passes.

  7. Shouldn't Peggy and Terence be concerning themselves with escalating prescription drug costs and their dwindling retirement?

  8. I'm guessing Peggy and Terence haven't had sex in 42 years.

  9. Correct me if i am wrong, even if it passes isn't Prop 8 violating Due Process and Equal Protection clauses in the US Constitution? Wouldn't a Class Action lawsuit be brought ??

  10. What a shame that neither Andy nor any of the comments here can rise above petty demonization of the opposition. That's a counterproductive approach and it will not win this important debate. Unless you can acknowledge that these are full humans with hearts and and limitations similar to yours, you will never have any chance of opening their minds.

One of my blogs happens to be frequented by a large number of LDS people. Even though it was only remotely related (at best) to the blog topic, I posted a reasoned but passionate argument against Prop 8. The vast majority of the emails I received (I disabled comments because it was not my intention to sponsor a debate on an issue that was entirely apart from the blog topic) were remarkably respectful, even if they did not agree. Many of them thanked me for the post and expressed both support for my position and deep frustration that the church had gotten so involved in this.

People need to understand that traditions die hard. Teachings that seem to have formed the basis for who people are cannot be cast aside like cold brussel sprouts. Based on the correspondence and debate that I have been involved with about this, there is no doubt in my mind that many more LDS people are trying to understand us than so-called "enlightened" people who are trying to understand them.

Polarization only creates more polarization. Wake up.

  11. I like how their sign has an image of a mother, father and two children with their hands in the air like they're being arrested.

  13. A scary thought occurred. Could Proposition 8 be the cause of this election's Bradley effect ? Certain pundits explained the Bradley Effect as a result of a gun control referendum on the ballot that brought out all sorts of conservative voters that weren't expected. Could this same think happen Tuesday and California go red ? Very scary scenario. Anyone with any wisdom to 'talk me off the ledge' ?

  14. Rascal, do you really run a blog called "On the Artistry of David Archuleta"? Like seriously? I feel so sad for you.

  16. oh come on gals, it's a free country ya know besides i never object to somebody's tastefully decorated lawn no matter what their political affiliation and these amusing political signs seem to be the height of good taste this year -- wonder what miss christopher lowell thinks ... i think they should add lights, maybe some halloween lights or maybe even x-mas lights... perhaps a pink flamingo or two or maybe one of those jockeys like you used to see in the hamptons... does the contessa have them?

  17. They make me want to go stand in front of thier yard and totally ravage my partner in front of them.

  18. I still don't understand the "protect marriage" argument. Shouldn't the sign read "withhold marriage" or "Reserve marriage"? I mean, if you are going to discriminate, then be up front about it.

  19. RASCAL, if there were more people like you, no propositions like that would ever exist and be considered. And no need to polarize.

But it's SO much easier not to bother...

  22. Alex - you're missing my point. I never said to accept injustice, but that the way to convert people is not to demonize them. It only compels them to double down on their ignorance.

    Posted by: rascal | Oct 31, 2008 2:39:10 PM

  23. good point rascal dahling... now i wonder if they will have to electrify their signs like that man did in nc because his neighbor some boy was stealing his signs... did he get quite a shock!

  24. "...maybe one of those jockeys like you used to see in the hamptons..."

You don't care if you're never loved on this blog again, do you, dear? To be unloved: it takes some real bat wings, I guess. But we won't think about that today. We'll think about that tomorrow.

lawn jockey....indeed. Stick with the pink flamingos, dear, for your own safety.

  25. They haven't "electrified" the signs to prevent theft, but they have taken other means... in another article about "Persistent Peggy" (as she's supposedly called), she says, "Earlier in the week, I poured corn syrup on the signs, and I hope the people who took them got their hands stuck to the steering wheel."

Hoping someone has a car wreck? How Christian of her.

BTW, here's their address... they deserve to be demonized.

    Terence and Peggy Carey
