Ellen's PSA may be late but it's excellent.
HOWEVER, currently it's only loaded on YouTube, her show's blog, and NoOnProp8.org.
I trust she'll be underwriting the cost to broadcast it repeatedly on California TV stations very soon. If it's not it's a totally waste of time...as preaching to the choir already is. [No, YouTube jugend are NOT the ones who need to see it.]

I know I haven't said it enough lately, but boy do I love Rachel Maddow!

Leland is right. Ellen's message is not useful if it isn't on TV a lot. That's the major communication channel of the voters who must be reached.
I think Ellen may have done the spot to placate her critics. I would never say this about an average person, since it would not be my place to presume they had the money, but I honestly think Ellen needs to make a substantial monetary contribution.
Preaching "love thy neighbor" on Jay Leno and Youtube are halfway gestures that leave a bitter taste.
Ellen hasn't even gone on her own show and cried, the way she did over the dog.
As goes California, so goes America, and there'll be a lot of work ahead if Prop 8 passes. And the Mormons are putting a lot into it and they have a lot.
Let it be on Ellen's head if Prop 8 passes.

I second you Sparks. I also don't think that phone interview sounded like Palin at all.

Thank you, Rachel Maddow, for not ignoring the political elephant in the room. Sarah Palin is an arrogant liar who in her own world is incapable of doing any wrong whatsoever.
I would not be surprised to hear that Palin keeps a large closet full of asbestos clothing for her public appearances. How else can she lie in public without having her clothes suddenly burst into flames?

her mother, Betty Degeneres, apparently gave $900. i wonder if Ellen agreed to do some sort of in-kind or anonymous contribution. maybe there's a political reason? i agree it's kind of baffling.
of course, my latest contributions haven't shown up in the tracker, so maybe Ellen has given and it just hasn't been publicized.

Ellen has done tremendous work for the gay community... she has been outspoken and basically put her career on the line. Her marriage generated the kind of publicity that $$$ just can buy. There are other ways to contribute to the cause. Don't second her intentions and please don't whine cause she hasn't given a certain amount of $$$. There are alot of gays who I dare say are wealthier who haven't done crap. Personally, I think the Constitution ad done by HOMOtracker was extremely powerful... For me, it hit the nail on the head. How dare they attempt to bastardize our constitution by adding discrimination. That is just so un-american it is really beyond the pale.

Nice PSA, Ellen...now how about spending some of your tens of millions of dollars to put it on TV so somebody actually sees it!!!!!!
The YouTube generation are NOT the people in desperate need of hearing the facts about Prop 8. Sure, it doesn't hurt, but I'm much much more worried about the independent voters who are seeing YES ON 8 ADS AIRING DURING EVERY SINGLE TV SHOW THEY WATCH.
PLEASE DONATE: http://www.noonprop8.com

Mike, I agree with you that there are other ways to contribute to the No on 8 campaign.
However, the No on 8 campaign is in dire need of money. Sadly, political and initiative campaigns come down to who can raise the most money and inundate the airwaves with their message.
Ellen is capable of donating far more than the average person. I can understand people who are financially incapable of donating finding other ways to help. For example, I'm just a student and have no source of income so I'm phonebanking to help out.
However, Ellen has millions of dollars and has the star power to host a fundraiser that could get others to donate money.
She's not doing either.

"please don't whine cause she hasn't given a certain amount of $$$"???
How about a dime? Five cents? One?
Last year "Forbes" magazine estimated her wealth at $67 MILLION. She was the topic in response to the PSA. The failure of other rich gays to give anything is no excuse for her not giving anything.
Grow up!

Work it out Rachel! Work . . . it . . . OUT!!!

i love ellen. but look, i contributed $50 to the "no on 8" drive, and i do not live in california, nor do i have the wealth that ellen does -- who lives there, and was married there. she has been very vocal on the prop 2 debate. does she value gay rights less than animal rights? why has she not supported "no on 8" on her show?
Posted by: nic | Oct 15, 2008 4:12:28 AM
You people have no idea if Ellen donated money or not. She's a class act all the way, and I'm sure if she had donated money, she wouldn't be calling magazines to let them know about it.
And as a guy above said, she has done more than any of us ever will for the gay community. So get off her back some, will ya?
Posted by: chevrier | Oct 15, 2008 6:49:19 AM
yes, ellen could have donated via a proxy so no one would know it was her money, or maybe she gives to a charity (eg: human rights campaign, etc) that has donated bulk amounts to 'No on 8'. She has handpicked guests on her show who've spoken out against Prop 8 (eg: Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a show which is watched by many, many people. She's already a lightening rod for issues surrounding the gay community. What pressure. Are there some gay people who will not be satisfied until she becomes their crucified messiah? Keep your eyes on the big picture. She is one woman. Save your rage for the injustice of being judged unfit for the right to marry not for the judgement of fellow humans (and allies).
