Obama Announces Members of His National Security Team

Obamasecurityteam

Obama introduced Hillary Clinton as his Secretary of State along with the rest of his national security team at a press conference earlier today:

"He introduced his team one by one, starting with Senator Clinton, his former bitter rival for the Democratic presidential nomination; then Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, who will stay on, at least for a time, in the new administration; Gen. James L. Jones, the former NATO commander, to be national security adviser; Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona to be secretary of homeland security: Susan E. Rice to be ambassador to the United Nations, and Eric H. Holder Jr. to be attorney general. All of the nominations had been expected, and the president-elect’s announcement contained no surprises. It did, however, contain some not very thinly veiled criticism of the Bush administration. 'Hillary’s appointment is a sign to friend and foe of the seriousness of my commitment to renew American diplomacy and restore our alliances,' Mr. Obama said, apparently alluding to the effects of President Bush’s Iraq policy — which the president-elect has bitterly criticized — on America’s international relationships."

  1. Well, well....good luck Mr President.

I don't know why I'm afraid of powerful personalities surrounding Barack. If he aint, why should I be?

  2. Mr. "I love torture and spying on Americans" Holder isn't exactly a change of direction.

  3. I think Hilary is an odd selection. Didn't the Obama camp say that she had no foreign policy experience? You know the whole "we were ducking while receiving sniper fire" thing.

  4. Looking at these comments I can only say: "Damned if you do and damned if you don't - eh Barack?"

  5. Matt

From your past pro repub anti-dem/ anti-obama posts one could conclude that you would kivetch no matter who Obama picked.

Anyway; all are pros on implementing policies / working the DC bureaucracy. All of Obama's picks for actual advisors are true left progressives which is great. His top advisers are progressive while the sec-s and implementers of his ideals / policies are seasoned mod dems who can actually put his stuff into practice.

My dream would be Biden retiring the 1st yr of the 2nd term 2011 and Hillary becomes VP after Obama and she learn that they can work together well and she goes a bit more left than her current mod dem status. Then 2016 Hillary runs as Obama's succession

  6. My dream since 1999 was for Hillary to be President by now.

Where are all the vile Hillary Haters now? They had plenty to say during the primary.

  7. While it's a loss to our clout in the US Senate, Obama's choosing Hillary shows both his wisdom and capacity for class.

Still trying to find any record of Gen. James L. Jones' public positions on DADT, but, apparently, he did oversee a ceremony promoting "Gomer Pyle" aka Jim "No, Rock Hudson & I Are Not Married" Nabors. Seriously.

  8. Hills as SOS rather than Bill Richardson, Obamas first bad decision. Many more to follow, i'm sure. Will there ever be a candidate I can truly get behind? I just thank spaghetti monster that it wasn't McCain.

  9. Jimmyboyo,

Um...I voted for Obama. I did find it interesting how you went for the "he's a conservative anti lib" line instead of answering a perfectly reasonable question that was asked of the Senator himself during a recent press conference to which his response to the reporter was "ha ha funny guys."

    Posted by: Matt | Dec 1, 2008 2:55:50 PM

  10. "Will there ever be a candidate I can truly get behind?"

Oh, for God's sake, Mr.E, what does finding decent "bottoms" have to do with President Obama's cabinet? You want Anderson Cooper to run for something?

I just want Presdent Barack to have people in his administration who are always on the same page as he is as Commander and Chief.

Although I also want to have people who will tell him different points of view--even disagree before they come out publically with policy decisions...maybe that's why he's choosing these very strong personalities, hunh?

    Great pick!!!!!

She's such a great social servant.

  12. So far the only people whining about his cabinet picks are from the wingnut crowd. Definitely a good sign.

Then I have you confused with another "matt" who posts conservative bs constantly. please all Matts type something besides just "matt" to differentiate yourselves, Maybe Matt1 Matt2 Mattthecool Matthairypitts, whatever so we can tell the difference between different Matts
    ----------------------------------

    Mr e

Hillary has more world wide clout than Richardson.

    Derrick

All of them have 1 shining bit of awesomeness in that they are all experts at actually governing. We aren't used to it vis a vis a Horse racing expert in charge of FEMA etc. The whole repub "government is bad" = they can never govern properly since that would counter their fundamental party platform/ world view of gov no matter what = bad

    ---------------

Davey NYC :-) remember back when we were talking about Hillary post the election? Well, it is done and I likeeeeeeee :-) As someone who isn't a huge Biden fan = she can move from SOS into VP the 2nd term to segway into running 2016

  14. As predicted, Obama is forming a right centrist government.

Clintons appointment is a sign that the war will escalate. Hillary Clinton is a war hawk who's even further to the right than Obama, the bigot who made sure we lost on Prop 8 by telling all the other bigots that 'god's in the mix' Add a few Sam Nunn’s and Colin Powell’s and you’ve got a formula for disaster. Obama plans to continue attacks on the Palestinians, supporting apartheid, stay in Iraq, menace Iran, ramp up the murder of civilians in Afghanistan and continue raids into Pakistan.

On the economic front Obama has already sided with the bailout for the rich retards who wrecked the economy, which now totals about $8.5 trillion dollars. Of that not a will go to working people who fell victim to predatory mortgages, car loans and credit cardsharks, to greening the economy or to repair of the infrastructure.

His choice of key economic advisors is proof positive that Obama isn’t going to do anything differently, or any better, than Bush. Obama’s White House economic director will be Lawrence Summers. This is very bad news indeed. While Summers ran Harvard he enraged environmentalists and anti-racists by signing a document that said “developed countries ought to export more pollution to developing countries because these countries would incur the lowest cost from… people made ill or killed by the pollution.” Then he said "the economic logic behind dumping a load of toxic waste in the lowest wage country is impeccable.” He angered women by saying they had no aptitude for science and engineering. Strike three was his opposition to affirmative action and racist accusations against prominent African-American Studies professor Cornel West.

The Bush wing of the rightwing is pleased that the Obama wing of the rightwing will carry on their policies.

...new administration is off to a good start." -- Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell.

"Virtually perfect ... " --Senator Joe Lieberman, former Democrat and John McCain's top surrogate in the 2008 campaign.

    "[R]eassuring." -- Karl Rove, Bushbrain.

"I am gobsmacked by these appointments, most of which could just as easily have come from a President McCain ... this all but puts an end to the 16-month timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, the unconditional summits with dictators, and other foolishness that once emanated from the Obama campaign ... [Hillary] Clinton and [James] Steinberg at State should be powerful voices for 'neo-liberalism' which is not so different in many respects from 'neo-conservativism.'" -- Max Boot,
    neocon McCain staffer.

"I see them as being sort of center-right of the Democratic party." -- James Baker, Reagan’s Secretary of State

"[S]urprising continuity on foreign policy between President Bush's second term and the incoming administration ... certainly nothing that represents a drastic change in how Washington does business. The expectation is that Obama is set to continue the course set by Bush ... " -- Michael Goldfarb of the neoconservative Weekly Standard.

"I certainly applaud many of the appointments ..." -- Senator John McCain

Hillary Clinton will be "outstanding" as Secretary of State -- Henry Kissinger, war criminal

Rahm Emanuel is "a wise choice" in the role of Chief of Staff -- Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, John McCain's best friend.

"The country will be in good hands." -- Condoleezza Rice, war criminal

Fasten your seat belts… The American economy is going to have a high speed train wreck. The ‘recession’ is now official and the DJ dropped 680 points today. The markets are whipsawing but trending down. And the Pentagon announced it’s going to deploy more troops in the US as the situation gets less settled.

  16. jimmyboyo - it might be better for people's perception of your Obamadolatry if you had political answers instead of silly personal attacks.

For instance, why does the right wing love Obama so? I’ll bet you’re too stupid to have a clever answer for that. Come on admit it, you’re just not very bright are you.

Why do the war criminals of the Nixon, Bill Clinton and Bush Administrations like his war policy? Too stupid, again.

Why were Obama and Bush up all night twisting congressional arms the day before the vote on the $700 billion reward for the retarded rich? Got a clue, jimmie? I thought not.

Why did he appoint Summers, a racist and woman hater who wants to poison third world countries as his chief economic advisor? Don't be coy, dummy, answer the questions. If you can.

And if you want to be personally insulting please get some original material. Tin hats are old hat . Yawn.

  19. Jimmie, learn to read.

It couldn't hurt. Or hire someone to read to you. Then you wouldn't miss the reference to Kissinger, who actually was a war criminal associated with the Nixon Administration? He approves of Obama's rightwing war policies. Dudelet, Henry Kissinger is alive and he supports Obama for the same reasons you do - islamophobia and a callous chickenhawk mentality that says it's ok if GIs and muslims die so US oil companies can get rich.

    That's sick.

It's clear that the right wing Republicans heartily approve of what righting Democrats like Obama are doing. They say so. I quoted bunches of them. You quoted... nothing.

You didn't prove me wrong. Predictably you made more personal attacks, but please, dudelet, try inventing some. The crap you recycle was retired years ago.

Crack pipe? Yawn. Séance. Yawn. Etc. Yawn.

Dudelet, substituting personal attacks for politics makes you look pathetic, but I'm betting that’s noting new for you. And I’m just going to drag the discussion back to politics, with quotes, with a real analysis, and with the perspective of putting the Democrats out of business. And I’ll have the help of a few friends; GI and civilian antiwar groups, Iraqi antiwar groups, the newly emergent GLBT left, unions, etc. So say bye, bye, dudelet. Your politics, which consist of an airhead’s lack of any real political perspective, beyond being an Obama roadie, are extinct.

You’re just way too stupid to know it.

  20. BILL PERDUE,

what you state as facts are simply assertions developed by a perverse mind intent on promulgating specious bolshevik arguments in an atmosphere which no longer supports the care and feeding of such foolishness. i may be reading too much into JIMMYBOYO's comments, but i doubt it. i do not blame him for not diving into the maelstrom of false argumentation that you rely upon so heavily.

in order for anyone to rebut your argument, one would have to accept a false premise. that is to say, you subscribe to the logical fallacy of "begging the question". one would have to first accept that obama is "forming a right centrist government." one would have to accept that hillary is a "war hawk." and on and on.... the simple quoting of random statements from right-wing repubs is not substantiation of your assertions. the onus is on you.

again, if you make outlandish statements and expect others to prove you wrong, you are taking the coward's position. such an approach is akin to the woman (all fired-up) at a sarah palin rally who warned against voting for obama because all women in america will be wearing black from head to toe. her logic is that obama is a moslem; he will do away with xtian values; he will strip women of civil liberties; hence, american women will be cast into the servitude and privation they suffered centuries ago.

the reality? obama is not moslem. thus, her argument falls apart. i hope that you are not as dumb as she.

on another not, i have been very pleased with developments since 11-4. a dem won; the courts (and most of us) can take a breather, and obama has surrounded himself with pragmatic, competent people. i cannot find fault with any of his choices. there is a yin and a yang to his thinking. he will not be a frat boy in a bubble like the shrub. he demonstrates strength and stability almost daily. that is a quality that has been missing in the white house for almost 8 years. and, on a personal level, i am so glad to listen to a prez once again who can speak in complete sentences.

  21. "on another notE". sorry.

    Posted by: nic | Dec 2, 2008 3:21:49 AM

  22. NIC.

When you say you won’t discuss the politics that critics of the Democrat party raise what you’re really saying is that like most Democrat shills you too lack functioning brain cells. You don’t understand politics and can’t defend your party’s warmongering, its role in wrecking the economy or its unending pandering to bigots. Because you don’t want to admit that you support a right wing candidate and party.

Did you imagine that your agonizingly sophomoric brand of multisyllabic logorrhea is going to impress? It does, but not in the way you imagine. It makes you dismissible.

Are you a really a writer for Jerry Springer?
