I guess all those commenters who have told us how silly we’ve been we’re right all along — Rick Warren really does love us and is open to a dialogue! Why, having a hatemonger ring in the Obama administration is the perfect choice and will instantly be forgotten!

Welcome to more of Rick Warren’s fake Christian love. Thanks, Barack! Sorry I voted for you and I won’t do it again!

He is just trying to inoculate his congregation against the fact that he has been caught in some lies.

He did compare gays to incest and pedophiles (in multiple interviews where there are transcripts and videos) and told Melissa Etheridge that he regretted doing so. But now he is claiming that he never made those comparisons.

In some interviews he has said that gays should have all civil rights except marriage yet to a Ugandan conference he said gays should have no rights.

He has been caught lying by the spotlight of history as Mike Rogers has said, and now Warren is running for cover and trying to salvage his image as a truthful “Man of God”.

  3. ERB says

backtrack much?? I love the part where he says he can understand why people would think that I equate pedophilia w/ gay relationships…that’s b/c you really think that way! douchenozzle!

and, maybe I am christophobic…I think that you are delusional b/c you blindly define your life according to some dude who clerics claim was immaculately concepted and did some fancy parlor tricks. However, there is a problem…he may have never even existed in the first place…and the “good book” was drafted by a bunch of zelots like this d-bag…yeah, I think my foundation is stronger in the reasonable phobia dept, b/c it is actually something to be fearful of!

  4. Ryan says

He just admitted something that I’ve been trying to get Christians to admit for a long time. He said:

“I’ve never seen an in-print article that has everything right. There’s always something that’s wrong. Why? Because we’re human. And so, you know, if you believe everything you read or hear or see, there’s a word for that: foolish.”

Sure, he was talking about the media, but doesn’t that apply to the Bible as well? Isn’t it possible that somewhere, someone got something wrong?

It’d be pretty foolish to base everything you do in life on a book that was written by multiple people over hundreds and hundreds of years and then translated numerous times, probably incorrectly. Surely there’s the chance that someone got something wrong in there. But, there’s Christians for you.

PISSED OFF? Do you think putting Rick Warren out there as the spiritual leader of our country and our new President is a rotten deal?

Call Obama’s transition team in DC, their phone number is:

    202.540.3000, follow prompts.

  6. Eric says

    First he attacks my “lifestyle.”

Now he attacks my religious faith.

Obama, you really need to do something now, or else you’ll have at least one angry queen to deal with for the next four years.

  7. Ed says

Paging DignityUSA, MCC,Integrity, open and affirmating churches with gay members, etc. (most of Catholic clergy too) I think Pastor Warren just called you out and you need to rise up with righteous indignation and set the boy straight.

  8. Derrick from Philly says

    This is getting interesting.

Is it possible that loud, outraged gay voices are going to force Warren to say something so outrageous and stupid that it will give the President Elect an honorable, and (most important) politically safe route to un–invite him to the inauguration? Interesting. Maybe some of you are more politically savvy than I thought you were…that is if y’all know what you are attempting, and not just ranting.

I wonder what the rest of the American people are making of all this? Not much, they’re broke and frightened.

  9. SFshawn says

“It takes no compromising to give people their rights. It takes no money to respect the individual. It takes no political deal to give people their freedom” -Harvey Milk(a real FIERCE advocate for GLBT rights).

28 more days to listen to Warrens lies, bullshit and hatred-Thanks for the “dialog” Obama!

  10. Andrew says

Let’s keep this in check of the larger reality. Not only is choosing him INSANELY offensive to the GLBT community but really to the country.

Since when does America agree with bullshit? His type of rhetoric is that which is shared with one group of people, the extreme right ring of the Republican Party, and nobody else.

Moderate Republicans, Independents, and Democrats all think the crap he teaches is pure bullshit. Sure, they haven’t heard it or even know his name, but Americans largely disagree with the religious right, even if they vote their way (that has a lot more with personal psychology than issues).

This pick is a slap to everyone in the face who lives above the Mason-Dixon line or who has a brain and knows that any God wouldn’t teach that two people in love is like a person and their dog.

  11. says

I actually do have a sort of “Christ-o-phobia”. I’m afraid of Christians! I’m actually afraid of all “religious” types in general. Usually because they use their book (Bible, Koran, whatever) to tell me how inherently evil I am and that I will swim in a lake of fire for all eternity. So, yea. Kind of Christophic here. Yep!

And can we please replace the word homophobia? “Homophobics” aren’t afraid of gays. They hate gays. They want to hurt us. I’m afraid of them! I don’t see them being afraid of me.

Melissa Etheridge misses the point. First I would have to say where the hell has she been: “I hadn’t heard of Pastor Rick Warren before all of this.” Secondly she thinks Warren is not a “gay-hater” because he has bought her albums. Big deal. That is like saying a rapist isn’t really a rapist because he mentioned love or bought a condom. Is she that naive? Or am I that dumb? If one were to follow her logic, then gays are relegated to being hairdressers, florists, interior designers, and entertainers.

She talks about how Warren regrets his choice of words but this is the standard “MO” for these right wing nut bags. They spew hateful remarks and when the heat is turned on they either proclaim it was taken out of context or that they misspoke. No. The truth comes out first and the lies try to cover-up the truth. Pastor Warren truly hates gays. In my heart I believe this. And if you think that he doesn’t because he is helping Africa with their AIDS crisis I want to remind you that AIDS in Africa is primarily a straight disease. Why not work with gay AIDS victims here in this country. Thousands need support, love, and medical care – especially when state’s are cutting budgets. Yet Warren offers nothing. And if you are gay, you can’t seek spiritual guidance and membership in his church because you are banned from joining if you are a “practicing” homosexual. He likens homosexuality to incest, pedophilia, and bestiality. He lied during Prop 8 by saying free speech of pastor’s will be taken away if it passes. That teachers will indoctrinate our young, impressionable children. He’s not a gay hater is he Melissa? Appeasement no longer works. It is time the GLBT stand up for our equality once and for all.

  14. Rick In Ohio says

I just re-watched the Beliefnet interview on YouTube. Starting at about 2:10,

Warren: “I’m opposed to having a brother and sister be together and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to one guy having multiple wives and calling that a marriage.”

Interviewer: “Do you think those are equivalent to gays getting married?”

    Warren: “Oh, I do… for 5,000 years…”

I’m no PhD, but I can’t help but interpret that to mean that our marriages are equivalent to pedophilia, incest, and polygamy.

I guess I’m not supposed to believe everything I hear out of Rick Warren.

Um, Christophobia? That’s a new one! I love how the evangiefundies conservabums turn everything around to make it look as if it is THEY who are being oppressed. Well, Mr. Rick Warren, you homophobic twit, please tell me when was the last ballot initiative that tried to institutionalize and legalize second-class–no, wait–THIRD-CLASS citizenship for evangelical christians? Please, sir, tell me! This homo ain’t got NO “christophobia” but I DO have evangiefundie-phobia because you people never ever stop trying to validate, justify and codify your absolute hatred and biblical-based bigotry against gay and lesbian people. You are a menace, sir. Whether you want to accept it or not, you are in the same class of vile, hateful people that Pope Benedict is in. How would you like it if a sitting Pope declared that evangelical christians are just as dangerous to humanity as global warming? I don’t think you’d like it very much, Mr. Warren. So, dude, YOU are the one who needs to get over it. Not US. You’re an asshole–an ignorant, hateful, spiteful, pathetic, narrow-minded, mean-spirited, bigoted, prejudiced, egotistical, power-hungry, parasitical asshole who contributes nothing to society but leeches off those desperate and gullible enough to believe you. You are the person who reminds me of something the late John Lennon once said: “God is a concept by which we measure our pain.” I think Mr. Lennon hit the nail on the head.

  16. Bucky says

The entire movement needs a leader. We don’t have one and it’s going to be the reason the movement fails, if it does. There is no face to this movement. The “Face” they see is gay sex. It’s the major hurdle they have to overcome. It’s a movement and a classification that in most people’s eyes is based on sexual intercourse and how you do it. That is a touchy subject and not a topic most people are comfortable with. This is tough to overcome. They need more focus on the love of two people. This isn’t going to happen by getting up in arms about a preacher during an inauguration for a guy that doesn’t believe in what we’re fighting for in the first place. Stop crying and whining and DO SOMETHING. We’re only making this worse on ourselves in the long run.

“[T]he job of the gay community is not to deal with extremists who would castigate us or put us on an island and drop an H-bomb on us. The fact of the matter is that there is a small percentage of people in America who understand the true nature of the homosexual community. There is another small percentage who will never understand us. Our job is not to get those people who dislike us to love us. Nor was our aim in the civil rights movement to get prejudiced white people to love us. Our aim was to try to create the kind of America, legislatively, morally, and psychologically, such that even though some whites continued to hate us, they could not openly manifest that hate. That’s our job today: to control the extent to which people can publicly manifest antigay sentiment.”

Also, Mike you said “You’re an asshole–an ignorant, hateful, spiteful, pathetic, narrow-minded, mean-spirited, bigoted, prejudiced, egotistical, power-hungry, parasitical asshole who contributes nothing to society but leeches off those desperate and gullible enough to believe you.”

This is a bit of a false statement. You don’t have to approve of Warren’s position on gay rights or any of what he says but the man does an incredible amount of charity work around the world in addition to leading many others to do the same. You can call him a bigot but I don’t think you can say he “contributes nothing to society”. You have to get things straight and get a little more level-headed before you can have a conversation rationally. How do you think any of this will get any better?

  18. Seamd73 says

You heard the man: “It’s all about love!”. Oh man, what a miserable blow hard. You can’t legislate emotion, whether it be “the Bible tells me I have to love everybody” (!) or “I like guys”.

If he doesn’t mean to inflict his view on others, why did he back Prop 8? He suffers from grandiose delusions, I think. He thinks he’s important, his fans think he’s important. Note to Rick: you’re not that important.

  19. Zeke says

How many faces does this man have?

He says one thing to the media. Something ENTIRELY different to Melissa Ethridge in a PRIVATE telephone conversation. And something ENTIRELY different again to his congregation.

If he really meant what he supposedly said to Melissa then why has he not said it in any of the defensive interviews and press releases that he has done over the last few days? Why did he not include in his “message to his flock” that some people on HIS side of this debate were being VERY hateful? Why didn’t he acknowledge the extreme and very visible homophobia that is common in the Christian community? Why did he not mention the REAL hate-speech and REAL hate-crimes that are committed in the name of his religion DAILY? Why did he not acknowledge why so many in the gay community are hurt and angry with him and other Christians who work so hard to marginalize us, demonize us and deny us rights?

He didn’t do ANY of these things because THAT would have been way too “Christian” and he hasn’t been in the business of being Christian he’s been too busy making a business out of Christianity.

  20. Patrick says

Listen to his words carefully. This guy is dangerous. First, he absolutely conflates bestiality/pedophilia with homosexuality IN THIS VERY VIDEO if you listen carefully. Second, I love when he says, “gay partnerships are typically between consenting adults.” Typically??? What the fuck is THAT supposed to mean? Isn’t it always? I mean, how is it a partnership if its NOT between consenting adults? Can you imagine a pastor starting a sentence with teh words, “heterosexual marriage is “usually” between consenting adults”?

Later in this video, notice how he otherizes those who attack him by deeming them “evil.” Evil? Where does “evil” reasonably come into a video message of pastor to his members trying to defend himself against statements made about him? Oh, that’s right, it’s always a good idea to remind your flock that anyone who attack you is evil.

Oh, and if you are gay and watching the video, you should shut it off, because he is specifically addressing the “members” of his church, and gay people are expressly told that while they can attend his church, they may not become members of it.

  21. JC says

I just listened to both clips. I can’t find the part where he calls gays “evil” or uses the term “Christ-o-phobia at all. Can sometime please note the times?

In fact, as a liberal gay man and fervent Obama supporter, I was all prepared to be up-in-arms. However, I was surprised by how rational and logical he was.

This is not how he has been portrayed by the media.

  22. Craig says

That’s right, “pastor” Rick! I am SO ‘Christ-o-phobic’ that I attend my Episcopal church every single Sunday, serve on a bunch of committees, and just bought a $250k life insurance policy to leave it a legacy. Oh, how right you are. Boy, oh boy, us gays sure do hate religion – of course it might just be homophobic slobs that dare to call their soul-killing megachurches “Christian” that we have a problem with, ya think? Maybe just a little? Hmmm?

  23. Zeke says

JC, I’m not going to listen to it again to find out exactly where he said that people were “Christ-o-phobic” but he did say it in one of the clips and he did say that it was “evil” that was stirring up all the controversy.

  24. simon says

What Rick Warren said about Buddism is totally false. Buddism has nothing to say about any marriage. It actually has nothing to say about human affairs on this earth. What he said is just wishful thinking that all religions believe in the same things. Is this the only kind of “religious leader” Obama can find to do the invocation? Dalai Lama would be a much better choice to higlight Obama’s message of inclusion. Of course that will make China hit the roof.

  25. Keith says

I’m really getting tired of hearing Melissa and her girlfriend call themselves married. They aren’t. They feed the belief that gays and lesbians don’t really know what marriage is and they diminish the reality that my husband and I are legally married. It’s not their marriage Warren wants to see annulled.

  26. stan says

Rick Warren looks & sounds like a queer. If he is one, that just makes him even more pathetic. Power does funny things to people. I hope his followers open their eyes and stop feeding the beast.

  27. LeeBoe says

Interesting how Rev. Warren rationalizes his beliefs versus his actions.

I encourage Rev. Warren to have a photograph of himself published sitting beside a third-world child whose skeletal body is on the brink of death because he/she does not have the same access to the food on which he so generously gorges. No caption or words would be needed to demonstrate the antithesis (one human dying from a lack of food while another human is dying from too much food) and the hypocrisy of man’s inhumanity to man.

He looks very much like the Right Reverend and Very Portly Jerry Falwell who (more than likely) died from his feeding behaviors. The Bible characterizes gluttony as a mortal sin. Even Rev. Jerry did not escape God’s wrath. Thus goes Rev. Warren?

  28. Wayne says

The Bible does not sat a gay man can not sleep with a gay man. If you look at King James will he to was gay. Back in the 70s 10 Christain Drs wanted to find out if gays were born this way or what. They found out Gays are born this way. God made gays to keep down the population, if everyone was straight the US would have 30 Billion 300 Million people living here. We have 303 Million people in the US now. One day when people go to see God and he asks why they have put him down for making Gays I want to hear there anwser.
I am Gay and I am a Christian and a retired Minister, Baptist. God loves everyone and yes that is you too.

  29. Puddy Katz says

“Christophobia”? You know I thought of this of as minor issue, and it is compared to the economic and war issues Obama will have to face. If he fixes those, or makes real progress toward fixing them, then he still has my support. But Christopobia? He is saying anyone who criticizes his version of Christianity hates Christ? Or even identifies himself with Christ? He crazy.

I hope that for many of us who are planning to go to Obama’s inauguration to bring an extra pair of old shoes if this bullshitter does show up at the inauguration. And perhaps we could practice aiming a little too before the big day. Mr. Warren, diet much?? Anita fucking Bryant ALL OVER AGAIN!!!! Rick Warren is a dirty liar, let’s light his van dyke on fire? =(

  31. Barry says

    Hi Rick,

I think that gays that are “attacking you” are really not afraid of Christ. I’m almost sure of it. They are simply tired of being treated like second class citizens. By telling us that we should use another word instead of marriage to define our legal partnerships, suggests that we are not equal to heterosexuals. That we do not deserve equal status in society because of the sex of our partners. This is simply wrong and outright discrimination (I mean read the definition of discrimination).

Also I cannot tell you how many times gay relationships have been equated to pedophilia, bestiality, incest and rape. Take a look at the history of gay rights and the statements that have been made towards gays (especially from Christians). It saddens me that people like you cannot see the prejudice and hate that you promote by suggesting gays are lesser than heterosexuals. I mean look what is happening in Uganda after conservative Christians visited there protesting gay relationships. Now, they are debating whether gays should be put to death. If this is not discrimination and hatred, then I really do not know what is. It is blatant hatred, let’s get real.

Rick, you really need to educate yourself learn a little about gay rights history, discrimination and maybe even some science about sexual orientation. We are not lesser! We are simply on the opposite side of the sexual orientation continuum. That is the only difference. And since society does not accept us, we have many more obstacles to face (based on discrimination and hatred). Social scientists and the medical community has known this since 1973 since homosexuality was removed from the DSM IV. It was removed because a Evelyn Hooker was able to show that the sample of homosexuals being researched was biased (gay subjects were clients already in mental health settings). It was a sample that did not generalize to represent the gay population as a whole. As more gays came out, generalizable samples for research were obtained. Research showed gays function no less and sometimes even better than heterosexuals. Therefore, homosexuality was looked at as a sexual orientation opposite heterosexuality (on a different end of a continuum). In fact, John Gottman, PHD has demonstrated that same-sex couples tend to be nicer towards one another and demonstrate less criticism and contempt between interacts of partners. He stated that heterosexuals can actually learn from same-sex relationships if they are willing.

Let’s wake up society! It is time to stop the Hate and the lies. Rick Warren, as a preacher, you have a responsibility to inform your church the truth and promote equality. Isn’t that what Christianity is about. Isn’t it about human equality even if you do not agree. You say it is but then in the same breath say gays need to use another word in place of marriage. Rick this is hated because it puts gays in a lesser category and clearly we do not belong there. Science has shown otherwise (as in plenty of other cases regarding science and judeo-christian beliefs). We have learned from our mistakes and it is time to make things right. There needs to be a separation between church and state. Even the people who do not want religion in their lives or believe, have a right to be free from it and be treated EQUALLY (including gays and lesbians).

Let’s make that happen. Only then we can have a better society.

EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL, EVEN IF YOU DO NOT AGREE, WE ALL DESERVE IT!
