Rochester Area Man Gets 5 1/2 Years for Homophobic Hate Crime
You may remember this brutal homophobic attack from earlier this year, as Rochester's Democrat and Chronicle reported it:
"According to Ogden police, Lance Neve, 26, was with his partner, Osbert Maldonado, 28, of Rochester, and another friend at Snuggery's Bar in Spencerport the night of March 7. They allegedly were subjected to derogatory comments throughout the night from Jesse D. Parsons, 24, of Spencerport. About 1 a.m. on March 8, Parsons apparently asked to shake Neve's hand because he had never shaken a gay man's hand, said Ogden police Investigator Scott Okolowicz. Neve refused, and Parsons then allegedly grabbed Neve and beat him up. When police arrived, Neve was unconscious. He was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured skull, nose, left eye socket and upper jaw bone and blood on the brain, Okolowicz said."
Yesterday, Neve's attacker Jesse Parsons was sentenced to a five and a half year prison term:
"Parsons was originally charged with a second-degree assault committed as a hate crime, but the hate crime piece was dropped as part of his plea agreement. Given time to speak to the court during a Nov. 20 sentencing, Parsons said while he didn’t mean to hurt Neve as badly as he did, Neve deserved it. Keenan immediately withdrew the plea and told Parsons his case would go to trial for the original charge of second-degree assault committed as a hate crime. If convicted on that charge, Parsons would have faced a sentence of five to 15 years in prison. Parsons opted to stand by his plea, but accept a longer prison sentence. He will also pay Neve’s medical expenses — more than $24,000 — and be subject to post-release supervision. Assistant District Attorney Perry Duckles called the judge’s decision fair and said the original deal and reduced charge were 'based on Mr. Parsons showing some remorse for what he did. It became apparent at the last sentencing date that that wasn’t the case.' Duckles said Parsons apologized to the court today for his November outburst."
He should have gotten more time, but at least some justice has been served.

So called expressions of remorse are mere spin for a lighter sentence and shouldn't be allowed to sway a sentencing judge from the horror of the crime. I wish all good thoughts for this unfortunate man who was injured; I hope he has made a good recovery.

HEPHAISTION,
i concur. i think the sentence is not as severe as the crime warrants. however, mr. neve will recover in much less time than the five and a half years that this monster got. adding it all up, justice wins!

Mr. Neve's injuries may have healed but his underlying pain and fear will be with him forever! As for Parsons he better have his friends ship him a lot of K-Y he will surely need it in a NYS Prison!! I hope he likes meat!! Hey Jesse Can you say "I am your bitch, boys!"

I would have given the son of a bitch 10 years prison time, plus a year of psychiatric help after released.Thats right I would take it to the extreme since these fuckin loser hate-filled str8 boys like to take their hate to extreme measures of violence.treat them as the bigoted losers they are.

I hope Mr. Parsons does his time--all of it--in Gen Pop at a truly awful prison like Attica or Auburn! I can't believe this piece of flotsam actually told the court his victim DESERVED it!

The argument that PARSONS did not "know" that NEVE was a "homosexual" is irrelevant anyway. The hate can easily be based on perception. Yes - it's great he's being locked up. Yes - he also deserved it and more time. But what the hell are justice system going to do to reform this guy. Chances are in 5 years - he'll be meaner, uglier, and probably having been raped a few times - even more irrationally hateful towards gays (and gay perceived) -- then they will just let him back on the streets. That will be even more scary. WHO RAISES THESE PEOPLE TO THINK LIKE THIS?
This guy could have been a nice person had he just simply been raised without so much hate. What a waste.
ALSO - what the hell did he say in that courtroom - someone has to find the transcript because we need to read the actual words. Because that isn't just being stupid that is clearly being filled with that much hate.
Merry Christmas dude - Santa got you some new Pajamas. They come in stripes or bright orange.

Hi, as sad as this case is, the thirst for revenge and needless references to prison rape is even sadder. Are we still not beyond this?
