RNC Chair Candidate Ken Blackwell Believes in Gay 'Cure'
The NYT reports that former Ohio secretary of state Ken Blackwell continues to be a leading contender for the chairman of the Republican National Committee:
"The six candidates are four white men, including two from the South, and two black men: Michael Steele, the former lieutenant governor of Maryland, and J. Kenneth Blackwell, the former Ohio secretary of state. Because it is a six-way race in which ballots are cast anonymously, it is impossible to project who might win. But party leaders said Mr. Blackwell and Mr. Steele were viable candidates, particularly Mr. Blackwell, who has strong support from social conservatives."
Michelangelo Signorile reports on an interview he did with Blackwell some time back in which he says "homosexuality is a compulsion that can be contained, repressed or changed."
You may remember Blackwell's recent response to Colin Powell's remarks that it was time for "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" to go. Blackwell said he was confident the current system works, even though he lacks the military experience of Powell.

"Blackwell is the epitome of why many African-Americans can't see most black Republicans as sell-outs."
Noah, are you kidding? Do you even read any African American magazines or websites? Black Republicans are largely derided as misguided and delusional, or merely opportunists ("blacks should be represented in both political parties"). And they often incur the wrath of the black community when they attempt to misrepresent the philosophy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and WEB DuBois.

Contained? Repressed? Well, that closet queen ought to know.

FOOCHY,
I think Noah meant to say that African-Africans can't see most Black Republicans AS ANYTHING ELSE but sell-outs.
JOE,
what one believes and practices as the governor of a conservative state like Virginia may be different than what one does when they serve the national party-- which may include 5 to 6 million self-identified gay voters. (don't challenge me on the number of Gay Democrats--it's just something I read somewhere.)

This man is a serious danger and one that should not be underestimated. As a resident of Ohio I know full well all of the hate and bigotry Blackwell is able to stir up. Just hours ago I received one of his famous heavily weighted survey phone calls and he's beating the drum against his typical targets including seeking a federal ban on gay marriage. The Repubican party is seriously splintered and in dire need of leadership - do not understand Blackwell sneaking his sorry ass in there while the rest aren't watching. Although I don't believe that he can do the GOP any good I have learned from experience to never under estimate your foe and Blackwell has a bag full of dirty tricks right out of the Karl Rove playbook.
