Slumdog Millionaire, 30 Rock Dominate Unremarkable Globes

HanksWhile the Golden Globes were fairly unremarkable last night in terms of "moments" aside from Sacha Baron-Cohen's expected eyebrow-raising commentary (this time a jab at Madonna for treating her ex-husband Guy Ritchie like her personal assistant) and the lack of nominations for Gus van Sant's Milk, which we've noted before, Slumdog Millionaire was the winner by numbers in the film category.

I did enjoy Tina Fey's revenge on anonymous internet commenters.

The late Heath Ledger won for The Dark Knight.

The only nomination for Milk was an acting nod for Sean Penn. Mickey Rourke won the category for The Wrestler. Darren Aronofsky flipped him off and it was caught on camera - video AFTER THE JUMP...

Still, Ted Casablanca from E! did manage to eke out a bit of gay politics backstage, asking Tom Hanks what he thought of Proposition 8. Hanks replied: "It's un-American. You put some good commercials on the air, you can convince anybody of anything. Love is love."

  1. I suppose it could've been a jab at Madonna (he's said to have his upcoming gay character adopting a kid from Malawi or similar in his next movie, too) despite their past collaborations (she put him on the U.S. map with her "Music" video, she handed him a major British comedy award), but I also found it quite an emasculating comment toward Guy...?

  2. I did not watch the show; avoided it was more like it, and after sitting through the WRETCHED scripted garbage spewed by Fred Willard and Brooke Shields at last years Emmy's, I will probably pass on that, as well.

I am just not into these self-glad-handing, mutual admiration society, egoist shows.

That and EVERY time, I mean EVERY time I surfed into it, there was Tom Cruise. Why?

  3. Best actress TV Drama, Anna Paquin?? WTF? Who are these animals?

  4. Whatever, fuck Cohen. Also, fuck the Globes...lame.

  6. Tom Hanks is your typical Hollywood actor. Says nice things about the gay community, but seems reluctant to play any substantial gay roles. And don't cite Philadelphia. Tom played a sick-gay-man-to-order, fluffed up sufficiently to appeal to those in the mainstream who view us as "those poor gays" without actually doing anything that was intimate, save for a dance with his male partner which could have been two drunk frat guys at a prom.

Face it - Hollywood sucks. Hollywood male actors are terrified of kissing other men on screen. For all their talk on gay rights, they've done very little to demonstrate it on screen.

  7. I am getting very nervous about Milk's chances at the Oscars.

I'm sure it'll get a slew of nominations and walk away empty handed. I would have thought at the very least Prop 8 would have pushed Oscar voters to have embraced the film more.

The HFP's diss of Milk (while it wins tons of critics' awards) was puzzling to me. I suppose they're a T&A obsessed bunch of straight dudes threatened by a well made film about a singular gay activist?

  8. Jason is totally the Seattle ricin terrorist, isn't he?

  9. I just think that the Globes is about a global audience and that Milk -- while a fabulous film and great performances ... probably means more to Americans and frankly gay Americans than it will ever mean outside the states.

People are just insular when it comes to politics -- whos picking up my trash? And mostly, as I say to my boss, I am not holding my breath for a national holiday, one of our sacred Monday holidays being devoted to MILK -- it will never happen.

    Jaundiced I know, but true.

  10. LOVE KATE WINSLET! I hope she gets nominated for and wins two oscars as well! Easily best actress of this era!

  11. I don't know. The Globes have always been sort of a WTF-awards show (Winslet winning for both The Reader AND Revolutionary Road, really?) but this year, I was happy with some of the winners. 'Slumdog Millionaire' is a remarkable film. Farrell won for 'In Bruges.' 'Mad Men' wins best TV drama. Bottom line is that these awards shows are always going to be disappointing no matter what.

  12. Re: Sacha joke, since when do we take seriously things people say at the Golden Globes with a drinks in their hands.

    I laughed my ass off.

I keep staring at the image at the top of this post waiting for someone to sit next to Tom Hanks.

And no one comes. It makes me sad.

  13. Unremarkable? Really now?

I'm very happy for the Slumdog Millionaire sweep as well as Kate Winslet FINALLY getting her dues... twice over! She's so fantastic.
