Son of Homophobic Megachurch Pastor Arrested in Gay Sex Sting

Dallas megachurch pastor T.D. Jakes has said that he would never hire a sexually active gay person, has spoken out against same-sex marriage, and has called homosexuality a "brokenness." Now his son has been arrested in a sex sting after approaching law enforcement officers in a park and exposed himself to them while masturbating, according to the Dallas Voice:

Jakes_3"Jermaine Donnell Jakes, 29, faces a charge of indecent exposure after allegedly exposing himself in front of two undercover vice detectives shortly after 10 p.m. on Jan. 3. Senior Cpl. Janice Crowther, a DPD spokeswoman, confirmed Thursday, Feb. 12 that the detectives were both male. According to an arrest affidavit, the detectives were conducting an investigation into citizen complaints of sexual activity when they observed Jakes and several other unknown males park their vehicles in the lot east of the park at 2106 W. Kiest Blvd. The detectives followed Jakes into a wooded area, where he approached them with his penis exposed through his unzipped pants, the affidavit states. Jakes masturbated for several seconds while making eye contact with one of the detectives. Jakes made no attempt to conceal his penis despite people walking and jogging on a trail nearby, the affidavit states. According to court records, Jermaine Jakes listed his place of employment as T.D. Jakes Ministries."

T.D. Jakes' ministry, Potter House, has a membership of 30,000.

The Dallas Morning News reports: " The son of Potter’s House Bishop T.D. Jakes turned himself in to the Dallas County Jail on Thursday on an indecent exposure charge stemming from an incident at a southern Dallas park last month. Jermaine Jakes, 29, posted $1,000 bail and was released Thursday morning, according to jail records... He was detained at the scene and released, as is often the procedure in such cases. The charge is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine."

  1. "Nowhere in the news report or the arrest report does it say that the detective with whom Jakes "interacted" was a man."

Look again. 2nd paragraph "According to the Dallas Voice": "Senior Cpl. Janice Crowther, a DPD spokeswoman, confirmed Thursday, Feb. 12 that the detectives were both male."

  2. Thomasina, what report are you reading? The one I read says "Janice Crowther, a DPD spokeswoman, confirmed Thursday, Feb. 12 that the detectives were both male" and the headline is "Jermaine Jakes, arrested after approaching male officers in park, lists T.D. Jakes Ministries as his place of employment"

What part of "male" does not refer to a man?

  4. Hey MARK, what exactly is an "openly gay LIFESTYLE"? I'm curious.

    (ugh)

  5. What's newsworthy about this? I didn't read where the son's spoken against homosexuals, only the dad.

It's be newsworthy if the pastor himself had been arrested in the sting. Am I the only one who realizes that the pastor and his son are two different people?

  7. "Nowhere in the news report or the arrest report does it say that the detective with whom Jakes "interacted" was a man."

Um, yes it does: "Senior Cpl. Janice Crowther, a DPD spokeswoman, confirmed Thursday, Feb. 12 that the detectives were both male." I think male implies that the detectives were men.

  8. I actually feel bad for the man, I can just imagine what it was like growing up in a house filled with hate, and, then to troll in a park and with the lurid details, no shame in his game? Its as if he wanted to get caught, most of those with this pent up self hate do, and, plus, its no secret that he has been cruising parks for years, he used to come to Oklahoma City and flounce around like Queen Ann.

Now for the worst part, they are going to circle around him and pray the gay out, that is of course he does not find someone behind bars to satisfy him!

  9. Poor guy. Perhaps there is something to that theory that homosexuality is caused by a defective father figure...I wonder if anyone is going to demand that the Dallas PD provide copies of the "complaints" which led to this sting. Funnily enough, LAPD, which was notorious for such stings, was never able to provide evidence of even a single one of the many "complaints" they always insisted they were responding to.

And, as we know, 10 p.m. is primetime for toddlers and young children in every park.

  10. TD Jakes is a pig in pimp's clothing...er, a pimp in pimp's clothing...

It sure comes around, doesn't it. Gotta suck to be the kid.

  11. I have a BIG PROBLEM with the homophobic witch-hunt/sting operation. Poor guy. This police tactic is part of the systemic, institutionalized homophobia and shame that makes faggots go have sex in the bushes in the first place. I'm fucking sick of this goddamn country. People think it's okay to have "gay sex stings?!??!?" It certainly is NOT. TEXAS IS ONE FUCKED UP STATE AND THE THINKING (and presidential material) THAT COMES OUT OF THAT PLACE IS HORRIBLE. Like the HIV-positive guy who got charged with murder for spitting on a cop. WTF? IF YOU'RE FROM TEXAS, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT OR GET THE FUCK OUT. You're really keeping the rest of us down.

  12. Maybe Jermaine can go off on his own and start a gay ministry. It might help him heal himself and he could help others as well.

  15. Why are we so concerned with hitting all the "black Evangelicals where they live" and not all people who promote intolerance? When your cause is equality for all, you shouldn't be weighted down in petty things like revenge. We have much more work to do, even within our own "community." Sure, this is amusing, but it should call on our better instincts, rather than suck our teeth and be happy for what is another family's shame and mortification.

  16. It should be noted that T.D. Jakes will be able to step away from this, since Jermaine is not Jakes's biological son, but rather his STEP-son.

  18. The Bible states that homosexuality is an abomination. Why do all of you think that everyone 'hates' you because they read and believe the scripture. There will always be homosexuals and lesbians but if you believe in the WORD it's clear and concise. I don't care what they do because everyone has to die for their own sins.

  19. What's going on with the posting system? I've noticed and had posts appear twice and disappear and the two different colors of the names...etc..

    Any body else notice this?

  20. "This should hit all the black Evangelical homophobes where they live. Take that, haters!"

Do I even need to point out what's wrong/bigoted about this post?

Posted by: Derek Washington | Feb 14, 2009 3:41:06 AM

  21. yes, dereck washington, i've noticed that, too.

    @LADY@CNTX,

you are why i find religion so enraging. your argument starts by begging the question: if we are to accept the premise that the "WORD" is indeed fact, then, you may have a leg to stand on. otherwise, my darlin' you are sol. faith in an absent god is simply 'faith'. do not confuse faith with fact.

  22. And why, lady2cntx, should we care about your book of fairy tales?

  23. Why have you posted the son's picture with his name? Do you have any record that HE has made hate speech against homosexuals? Are you going to start posting the names and pictures of the men in New York who are being arrested in the recent bookstore stings if someone in their family is a bigot?

This seems like an incredible error in judgement on the part of towleroad.

Hate the sinner, love the son.

Unrelated to this thread, but the changes confused me, too. Seems like now there's a "Next" button so comments can stretch to a next page? The orange names are people with homepages, I believe. You can't click on people's e-mails anymore, perhaps because of "stalking" issues? But maybe Andy has addressed this elsewhere?
