Susan Boyle Cried a River Over You

Boyle2

Scotland's Daily Record uncovered a 1999 charity CD with what they say is the only previously recorded song by Britains' Got Talent-spawned international YouTube superstar Susan Boyle. She sings "Cry Me a River" on the CD, which was recorded at Whitburn Academy.

"The Millennium Celebration disc, which was partly funded by Whitburn Community Council, was the brainchild of local newspaper editor Eddie Anderson. He launched a search for unsigned acts to take part. And as soon as he heard Susan at the auditions he knew he had found something special. 'I was amazed when she sang,' Eddie said. 'It was probably the same reaction as everyone had last Saturday. Susan was exactly the same then as she is now. She has a fabulous and unique talent.'”

  1. Please no. Enough.

  2. Poor girl waited her whole life for a spot in the sun and as soon it finally comes she gets a herpes outbreak right along with it.

  3. My goodness, what a vocal force! She'll be signed shortly, regardless of the outcome of BTG!

  4. WES - you are killing me with that comment and I thought the same exact thing.

Here's my two cents - Susan was a man.

  6. She has a face made for radio! But I love her voice

  7. oh screw you cynics

  8. The sad part is that the "story" is that she's ugly and can sing. WOW. We would NEVER do this for someone of average good looks. The media is busy making stereotypes, then banking in on "breaking" stereotypes.

  9. I was a little offended at her Britain's Got Talent video.

Everyone was so shocked that an older, frumpy woman had a great voice? Since when was there ever a correlation between looks and voice?

The sneers and incredulous faces of the audience before she sang was a bit obnoxious. And then when the judges were like, "everyone was against you and mocking you but now they love you."

    WTF?

  10. In addition to having a great instrument, it seems she's an adept musical stylist.

It should be a fun season in the UK if Boyle can manage to stay away from bombastic numbers like that horrific Miserableness she auditioned with.

  11. Love the voice but someone please call the Fab 5 and Stacie and Clinton, PRONTO!

  12. Damn shallow queens.

She has a fantastic voice, who cares what she looks like?

Oh wait, that's right - you do.

  13. Some of America's greatest singers weren't (& aren't) great beauties. I wish her ALL the luck! There is something beautiful about her story.

  14. The lady has an amazing voice, who cares what she looks like? (I think she's beautiful inside and out).

    Get over it, you cynics.

  15. She's incredible!

  16. Go easy on them, Ichabod. Making fun of someone else's looks is all some of these commenters have.

  17. I love the story, and her voice is lovely, but the reaction, particularly in the news, regarding what was at first a heartwarming Cinderella story, is quickly turning into a revealing expose on the ugly underbelly of western culture's perceptions of beauty.

On MSNBC this morning, I watched an interview with Ms. Boyle, which was followed with the type of praise one heaps upon a trained seal, "oh, look at how sweet she is," exclaimed the reporter--wow, she can sing and speak, good girl! It was so dehumanizing. That was followed by an exceedingly distasteful banter among the three anchors, two of whom joked with the third (a male anchor), that Ms. Bally was available and was looking for a man. How they laughed, to the point that one of the anchors fell out of frame.

Can you just imagine if someone said, "oh look, the sweet gay man can change a tire!" Why can't we just find the beauty in storybook nature of Susan Boyle's experience, root her on, and fall in love with the beauty found in her voice and leave it at that? I don't know, it just feels to me like the story is taking an ugly turn, before we even really had a chance to fully enjoy it.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

  18. If any of you are referring to my post, calm down. I think she's a lovely woman with a lovely story and a lovely voice, I was just pointing out the obvious. I didn't call her ugly, I'm just highlighting how much it would suck to become an overnight sensation and have a herpes outbreak simultaniously.

    Posted by: Wes | Apr 17, 2009 12:05:10 PM

  19. No you're not, Hunt - That's exactly what my comment before was trying to get at!

    Posted by: A | Apr 17, 2009 12:07:05 PM

  20. I saw her on the Today show. Same old patronizing shit - just because she's homely, she is probably inept at managing her life...and it's AMAZING that she has any sort of talent! Matt and Meredith were extremely offensive, and were even going to "hook her up with another Idol who caused such a craze several years ago." I had to go to work, but I assume this was William Hung. Can anyone confirm? I was so annoyed.

  21. I am right with you Hunt, could not have said it any better. I think she is phenomenal and deserves her praise and time in the spotlight without a bunch of bitter, jaded people trashing her because she is not up to their physical perceived standard of beauty.

I hope, in spite of and because of, all the patronizing crap that has been heaved at her so far, that she wins the competition and sticks it to the fools!

  22. I wish I could see "Nonplussed"'s super hot face and body and hear Nonplussed's amazing singing voice.

Not everyone is stereotypically beautiful or hot or whatever. But many people have other talents, but never get the opportunity to explore them because of the negative comments critical people make.

    Posted by: homer | Apr 17, 2009 12:29:27 PM

  23. And in other news, the world is full of pretty people with no talent for anything. The difference between them and Ms. Boyle is that she'll keep her amazing voice while they'll struggle (and fail) to keep their looks.

    Posted by: John C | Apr 17, 2009 12:30:58 PM

  24. @Hunt

No, I'm right there with you. The tone has gotten extremely patronizing and insulting.

How dare someone be so talented and not be drop dead gorgeous!

  25. Was anyone else hoping against hope this was JT's Cry Me a River? How amazing would that be...
