Trailer for Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno is Here - WATCH

Bruno

The trailer for Sacha Baron Cohen's gay Austrian news reporter film Bruno is here and contains much of the meant-to-offend stealth footage that I've posted about over the past year.

Watch it, AFTER THE JUMP...

  6. This is really bad and really offensive.

    Posted by: Bill | Apr 2, 2009 4:41:07 PM

  7. Yes it is, Bill. And really, really funny.

    Posted by: crispy | Apr 2, 2009 4:47:06 PM

  8. Bill,

he shows the world just how stupid the world is.

Hey, wait a minute...are you doing a Sacha Baron Cohen on me, Bill?

Posted by: Derrick from Philly | Apr 2, 2009 4:48:59 PM

  9. I only made it ten minutes through Borat. I think he's hot and funny on a talk show but his humor is a bit too straight for me.

  10. ZOMG! The OJ line was priceless.

    Posted by: KevM | Apr 2, 2009 4:50:27 PM

  11. Hilarious!

I loved the Samantha line too.

And where the fuck did they dig up Richard Bey?

    I love it.

  12. He shows the world just how stupid elements of it are. Like in this, how stupid faggots are. Other elements are involved, but that is, of course, at the forefront. Faggotry= vapid stupidity.

  13. This'll be great and no doubt hilarious for cringe-humor and jackassery fans, and for the urban young'n'hip. The rest of us will have to worry how far stereotypes have been reinforced and much gay revulsion has been added to the culture. No doubt I'll be flamed, but I'd be able to enjoy SBC's characters more if they weren't making life less safe for the already persecuted.

  14. Yes, KEVM:

But what Sacha knows but the audience didn't is that it's not OJ, it's probably the Ojay or Ojai or whatever, but not as in Simpson.

Some people worry that the movie audience may not "get" stuff like that either, but that's the chance Cohen is taking. He is against bigotry and racism, but he attacks those problems from the zaniest, most controversial and unpredictable strategy I've ever seen.

Posted by: Derrick from Philly | Apr 2, 2009 5:00:01 PM

  15. So Adamblast, you're suggesting we just don't talk about it and ignore it and maybe it'll all go away? Humor is a very powerful conduit for very powerful conversations.

  16. Yea.... so...hate to say it, but I think our enemies will see this as justifying their stereotypes about gays.

Not all publicity is good publicity.

Cohen could make Bruno extremely sympathetic as he did Borat, but I didn't see that through the trailer.

It probably will be funny, but I doubt Cohen made the movie to advance LGBT equality.

  17. Attacks? Cohen is now elevated to civil rights crusader?

    Posted by: TANK | Apr 2, 2009 5:10:56 PM

  18. These posts are always so funny, funnier than the clip. Remember to laugh once in a while all of you OH SO SERIOUS - WORRIED ABOUT STEREOTYPES = UPTIGHT HOMOS. You don't have to see the movie and you don't have to worry about the rest of us who do. GOI - Get Over It.

    Posted by: Randalf | Apr 2, 2009 5:20:54 PM

  19. Ben, I do hope some people walk away from this and engage in thoughtful conversations about homophobia and tolerance. But is that really SBC's audience? For every *thoughtful* response there'll be how many "fans" whose main takeaway is laughter at how gross fags are? As Derrick says, SBC takes a big risk with this humor. Sadly, he doesn't take it alone, but risks all of us. FWIW, I do get that his personal politics are anything but anti-gay. But that takes a back seat to his desire to make bank by shocking and offending.

  20. I totally agree with you, adamblast. After all the banal Jewish humor in Borat, the slaughter of Jews reached numbers not seen since the Holocaust.

    Posted by: crispy | Apr 2, 2009 5:47:38 PM

  21. OMG!

    I so cannot wait!

    Posted by: Pete | Apr 2, 2009 5:56:02 PM

  22. Now see, I would have thought Tank would love this -- with his light heart and incredible sense of humor.

The only problem I have with the movie is that it clearly reinforces the insidious bisexual double standard.

    @Crispy - LOL

  23. I can see why one would be offended by this depiction and I think it's good to discuss it rather than to dismiss someone and tell them to "lighten up." I don't think the intention of his last film was to totally dismiss it as "just a funny movie"--his comedy works on a deeper level. So because there are so few depictions of us in movies... esp. mainstream ones--I think it's only natural to be critical. It sort of reminds me of the fist-bump New Yorker cover with the exaggerated depictions of the Obamas--smart people get the satire but many don't.

  24. Because world wide, jews have it so much worse than the queers. I mean look at Iraq. Jews are rounded up and executed for being Jews in Iraq. Annnnnyway, jews were offended by borat, too. Not me, because antisemitism doesn't have the cost of homophobia( it's a problem...a big problem; it's just expressed differently RIGHT NOW worldwide), and DID NOT play as strong a role in borat. It wasn't a central theme. Nowhere throughout this entire goddamn FUCKING MOVIE isn't the gay stereotype being taken to new heights of depravity. It's supposed to be funny because HE'S gay, get it?

I'm OFFENDED! I'm OPPRESSED! I want a public apology and I want it FUCKIN' NOW! AND FUCK ALL OF YOU WHO DISAGREE WITH ME AHEAD OF TIME. Time saver.

    Posted by: TANK | Apr 2, 2009 6:40:54 PM

  25. And if Sacha Baron Cohen doesn't have the decency to make a nonsarcastic public apology for this OFFENSIVE FILTH, I'm petitioning rob reiner and other hollywood jews, and they'll make him.
