Iraqi Cleric Sadr Condemns Homosexuality, Urges End to Violence
Radical Iraqi Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr has spoken out against the recent executions of gays in Iraq, but also said that homosexuality itself should be eradicated, AFP reports:
"'The purpose of the meetings is to fight the depravity and to urge
the community to reject this phenomenon,' said Sheikh Wadea al-Atabi,
referring to a Thursday seminar attended by clerics, tribal leaders and
police. 'The only remedy to stop it is through preaching and
guidance. There is no other way to put an end to it,' he said,
stressing that the movement could not resort to violence after a series
of killings of gay men in Baghdad. 'Al-Sadr rejects this type of
violence ... and anyone who commits violence (against gays) will not be
considered as being one of us,' Atabi said...At Thursday's seminar, which was held in Sadr Cirty, Al-Sheikh Dawud
al-Enezi, a Sadr movement leader, said 'we must correct the morals of
the nation. Homosexuality "is a disaster that has come to the
community.' Abu Hussein, a tribal leader in Sadr City, said: 'Everybody has to work to preserve the morals of young people from the
corrupt phenomena of the West.'"

i went to egypt and they were all up in my ass - im not even kidding - one security guard at the cairo museum said 'you want to see king tut's penis' and whipped it out right in the museum in a secluded area - so whatever to this nitwit and all the asshole 'cleric' hitlers
the people of the middle east are lovely and warm and sexy and funny as hell - nothing like miss bad facial hair and her idiot pronouncements

I guess it's a start? These middle eastern nations are still SO backwards. This is the first baby step in the right direction - stop killing them and talk to them.

Someone should shoot that bitch with a dildo---right between the lips!

Wow. I never expected a call to end the violence against Iraqi gays from that front.
Sadr's statement will actually go a long way to stopping the torture and murder of gay Iraqis.
That said, here's to hoping that gay Iraqis are able to find security again.

What a coincidence, I was thinking that Iraqi Clerics should be eradicated because I've come to realize that they're a disaster that has come to the entire world. It might be nice if someone told these charming people that it's 2009.

Quite frankly if homosexuality leaked in from anywhere it wasn't the west. Iran and many of the surrounding cultures are hugely homophilic. Gay sex takes place commonly among self identified heterosexuals, one of the many reasons my Iranian friend loves visiting home. He's told me cruising there is akin to fishing with dynamite. I cannot help but feel their treatment of gays is a form of cultural self mutilation.

kind of pathetic that a religious fanatic iraqi cleric has now done/said more against the killing of gays in iraq than the american government.

Edo is quite sadly correct, and the same applies to the UK government.

Interesting considering thier societies segregate women and men...the men walk around holding hands/huggging....they are ALWAYS together, and seperated from women...? I find it strange. ..and of course RELIGION POISONS EVERYTHING!

Who cares what that fat, bearded, smelly goat-fucker thinks? He probably has a harem of 12-year old boys anyway.

I agree with Mike, i would not trust that man around any pre-pubescent boys!!! I am not comfortable with a culture or a society which publicly humiliates and injures "gays" and yet behind the scene practices the same "Crime" as if it were ok!!! For me, I will never visit any Muslim Country Period simply out of protest to the religious entities which harbor so much hatred and cause so much pain to our brothers and sisters in those countries!!

I remember a man flirting with me in Acaba, Jordan years ago, he wanted me, but stopped short because of a fear of getting caught. There is no way to erradicate something so natural as flirting. Humans seek love and companionship, as do the birds and the bees.

Well, as much as I loathe the silly old fart generally, this IS - for them - tantamount to allowing gay people in Iraq a well-deserved breathing space from ridiculous persecution. For him to speak out in such a way is quite impressive, because moronic militia will have to listen, seen as though they need a "leader" to tell them what to do and how to function every day of their lives.
It's the first time he's resorted to non-violence for a long time and it's not an ideal statement but it's a start and I'll bet gay Iraqi's will feel a little more safe.
Maybe he's gay himself, secretly. As a cleric who's studied his own culture, he will WELL know about same-sex history, even if he pretends he doesn't. It's just trendy to say "oh it's come from the West". If he thought that was really the case he'd be encouraging these killings. Makes me wonder if he's not had someone in his own family caught up in this and is protecting them.

Gee, Moqtada, thanks for clarifying that. Now, here's the deal: you are a fat, ugly, ignorant goat-fucker and I imagine in your pathetic life you have probably screwed another man or been screwed by one. It's a part of your cultural history (if you care to check). You can call for "non-violence" but "eradication" reeks of "final solution". The only people that should need eradication are you and the thousands of other "religious leaders" (and I don't care if they are Muslim, Jewish or Christian) who preach hatred against gay people. Go stick your ass up in the air and bang your head on the floor some more.
