Mormon Congressman Opposes D.C. Council Same-Sex Marriage Bill

Following yesterday's passage by the D.C. Council of a measure that would recognize same-sex unions performed elsewhere, ex-con and former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry, who was the sole vote against the measure, declared: "All hell is going to break lose. We may have a civil war. The black community is just adamant against this."

Chaffetz Barry has some allies in Congress, the Washington Post reports:

"At least one GOP member said yesterday that he will try to block the bill from becoming law. 'Some things are worth fighting for, and this is one of them,' said Rep. Jason Chaffetz (Utah), the ranking Republican on a House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee that oversees the District. 'It's not something I can let go softly into the night. . . . I recognize the Democrats are in the majority, but I represent the majority of Americans on this issue.' Several council members and gay rights advocates are hopeful that the Democratic majorities in the House and Senate will be able to stop congressional intervention. 'I do not believe that a serious attempt to overturn the council bill will be made or will be successful,' said Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), who praised the council's decision.

Congress has 30 days to review District legislation: "The bill could present the House and Senate with their biggest test on the same-sex marriage issue since Congress approved the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996. "

  1. Did I hallucinate or did I see that the latest polls hows the majority of Americans are actually for gay marriage (or at least not opposed to it) now?

  2. I am happy that Marion Barry, belatedly and absentmindedly, voted against marriage equality. That guy is so corrupt I don't even want his support.

  3. Marion Barry *WANTS* a war i think. heck, bring it on. I'm not afraid to stand up to him or whoever else feels like fighting against this.

  4. Why doesn't this dumb fuck just worry about Utah!

  5. Mr. Chaffetz, you need to check your facts and not your Jeffe in the Mormon Church. You do not represent the majority of Americans. Get you head out of your ass, it stinks up there like your facts.

Marion Barry? Seriously? A coke head, criminal is against same-sex marriage and deigns to speak for all Black Americans? NOM and the rest of the H8ters can have him. He's the perfect poster child for them. I can see Carrie Prejean and him in one commercial together. What a riot!

Heterosexuality is not normal...it's just common.

  6. Barry was arrested doing crack with a whore, and he wants to talk about marriage?

As for this Mormon prick Chaffetz, I saw him interviewed by Stephen Colbert and to say he is clueless is an insult to clueless people.

  9. Why isn't Marion Barry's religion listed before his office? Is he Baptist Mayor? Episcopal Mayor? Or are we all just supposed to get that he's "Black" Mayor Marion Barry?

I wonder what Black Mayor Marion Barry thought about the Gay Fan who rushed on stage at Britney's concert? He was probably impressed by the way Gay Dancers and Straight Catholic security shuffled that Gay Fan out of there.

  10. I don't think we need to worry about this. Such a bill would have to make it through two Democratically-controlled committees, come up for a vote in two Democratically-controlled legislative bodies, receive a favorable vote in two Democratically-controlled legislative bodies, and then receive a signature from a Democratic President.

    Very unlikely.

  12. Am I imagining it, or is Utah getting his literary reference wrong? Isn't that passage from the poem, which I believe he is misquoting, about letting something slip into the oblivion of the night and disappear? If so, he seems to be saying that he won't let the legislation disappear and never be heard from again, as if he wants to save it, rather than saying that HE will not go down without making a lot of fuss about this council decision.

Am I right about this, or is the devil in the parts of his quotation that are missing here?

  13. A) Wisebear--I thought the same thing--he and Bojangles Craig probably have a lot in common.

    B) The fact that Congress still has the right to overturn DC laws is absurd.

    C) I also agree with Andrew K--we don't need supporters like Crackhead Berry.

  16. I think we need to ban Mormon marriage. And Mormon proselytizing. Stop these evil people from reproducing and recruiting.

  17. Oh thats shocking news. Mormon against Gay Marriage. He might look cute in his magic undies though. LOL

And as for Marion Barry. Its the people like him that are leading creedance to all the homophobic african american talk. Its getting quite out of hand now. The National Headquarters of NAACP really needs to be vocal NOW if its going to support the GLBT Community.

  18. It truly amazes me that an advocate for HOME RULE and Hell even DC Statehood that crackhead and ex-convict MArion Barry is looking to Congressional INTERVENTION on a local issue.

This man continues to be an embarrasement to DC but also is a statement about those who continue to elect this tax-evading con.

  19. Funny how you hate those who don't agree with your persuasion....hmmmm isn't that what you accuse the other side of doing? Look at the vile descriptions and outbursts!

Homosexuality is maladaptive. Stick to science. Nature discriminated against the gays first. Go head, throw a tantrum, wail and gnash with your teeth, you are not civil, ever.

You will eventually get your marriage law, but you will never get respect or recognition. Instead, you have brought civil war back to our country.

  23. @Go Chaffets - "You will eventually get your marriage law, but you will never get respect or recognition. Instead, you have brought civil war back to our country."

Uh...yeah...assuming that you are a Mormon like Chaffets...do you not see the irony about the hate you just spewed? Good luck with your cluelessness.

  24. PAUL C,

Marion Barry was the "Black Mayor" of DC back in the 80s. Adrian Fenty is the "Black Mayor" of DC now, and he is risking his beautiful brown political ass by supporting gay marriage rights. He is standing up against black homophobes and idiots like Marion Barry.

But I don't think Mayor Fenty, nor Eleanor Holmes Norton, nor all the black elected officials who support gay civil rights have any idea how many anti-black, bigoted white gays there are. I do...now.

My, my...it must be frustrating for those on this blog who enjoy insulting ALL black people to have to deal with this particular situation in DC: a situation where those who are against civil rights for gays are black, but those who are FOR civil rights for gays are also black. Frustrating, in that your racial slurs can't be directed at the "bad" ones without insulting the "good" ones also.

Well, y'all keep trying. After all, you're of the same Aryan tribe that gave us Anita Bryant, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Oral Roberts, James Dobson, etc...oh, and that witch from North Carolina who said that Matthew Shepard's lynching was a hoax.

    Aryan homos rock!
