Paul Cadmus: Vintage Beefcake in Toledo
Tyler Green at ArtsJournal's MAN takes note of this new acquisition by the Toledo Art Museum. It was painted in 1931 by Paul Cadmus. "Jerry" is a painting of his lover Jerry French and has been in the French family until just recently.
Cadmus was 26 at the time, writes Green: "French was a frequent subject and model for both Cadmus' paintings and photographs. They met at the Art Students League in New York and Cadmus later credited French with encouraging him to pursue fine art subjects rather than commercial work...French and Cadmus were lovers when this picture was painted and remained lovers even after French's marriage...in 1937...Given the resemblance between French and the men in scores of Tom of Finland drawings, it's worth noting that Cadmus' work was indeed a particular point of departure for Touko Laaksonen, who is better known as Tom of Finland."

Wow, what a spectacular painting. That sort of perspective work is really hard (you can see the challenge in the sheets -- sheets are hard as hell to get right). I am one of those people that believes love makes better art than politics (take note, Obama poster lovers!). The proof is is this pudding. ANd what puddin' it is.

This painting is nearly 80 years old - proof that good looks are timeless. Paul Cadmus was one lucky guy. It's a beautiful work (Flyboy is right about the sheets) with a stunning subject.

Flyboy : I hated that Obama poster! I thought it made a nice-looking man look like a fascist. Anyway, this Toledo thing is more evidence that the MidWest is so much cooler now than New York or California.

This is one of my all time favorite paintings. It's amazing how a man in love can portray his lover so beautifully. Thanks for the post.
By the way, "Intimate Companions" is a terrible, tacky, catty book that is unworthy of the contributions that its subjects made to the arts.

I lived in Toledo nearly 4 decades and mostly hated the place. But the Museum, zoo, and libraries are fantastic! I seem to have left a bit too soon....
