SF Mayor Gavin Newsom Calls DOMA Brief 'A Big Mistake'

Prior to the start of the Los Angeles Pride parade which happened this weekend, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa both expressed concern over the disturbing Department of Justice brief filed last week in defense of DOMA.

Villaraigosa_newsom Said Villaraigosa: "I'm concerned about some of the arguments being made by the Justice Department."

Added Newsom: "I think it's a big mistake."

The L.A. Times reports: "Newsom and Villaraigosa, potential rivals in next year's Democratic primary for governor, were both careful to avoid direct criticism of President Obama, who pledged during his campaign for the White House to repeal the marriage law."

  1. Gavin Newsom to me is nothing more than a supporter of white wealthy privilege. I think as queer people we should not be so quick to jump on the marriage bandwagon. Marriage is a dying institution in our country. Over 50% of marriages end up in divorce, are we really going to somehow be better than that? The rights that marriage bestows should be readily available to all citizens without having to declare to the state who you're fucking. Marriage should be a private matter, sort of like a baptism or bar/bat mitzvah. It always saddens me to see so many gay people fight for their own cultural erasure.

  2. Okay, they don't have to criticize Obama, I'll do it for them: Obama is no different than Clinton. I'm looking for DADT to have a spanking new baby brother...

JONATHAN: You really don't seem to understand that the way the system works the only way to build and protect your family is to be legally married. Way to much law and regulation tied to that single thing to dismiss it as irrellevant.

  3. Careful not to criticize Obama? Cowards. Obama has been a complete disappointment. Both Newsom and Villaraigosa are tools.

  4. I do understand David. Other countries offer legal protection to families without the use of legal marriage. According to the logic you provided, not many families are being protected if the divorce rate is so high. Also, a family is not fully a "family" until the two adults(assuming we use the monogamous model society gives us) until they are legally married.

  5. The Obama Administration wanted to kill this story by announcing it late Friday, I hope it gets picked up by the news and stays there for a while.

  6. Those jumping on the Hate Gavin Bandwagon driven by lunatic fringe fools, have not been paying attention.

He is one of the FEW office holders to have consistently condemned the Party's cowardice on marriage equality. If it weren't for that, they would be grooming this young, smart, charismatic, and, yes, handsome man to be their 2016 Presidential candidate. Instead he's a pariah in the Party. Did you even see him on the podium at the Democratic Convention last summer?

His campaign for governor is one of the FEW races in 2010 that gays with any self-respect should donate to. The majority should be boycotted to finally teach the Party and the President a lesson...the ONLY kind they understand.

  7. Michael @ Matlovich: To hell with 2016, let's get him into the Governor's mansion in '10, and run him against Obama in '12! At this rate, Obama will be another one term wonder anyway. And why wait 4 extra years with another two-faced back-stabber like Clinton? After all, W didn't have as much political experience, or much more Gubernatorial experience when he ran and stole the office in '00.
