Site Issues: We Need Your Help

It has come to our attention that many people are getting a blank page while trying to access Towleroad on various computers. While our traffic indicates that this issue is not widespread, it is prevalent enough for it to be a concern to us and we have been having a very difficult time getting to the root of the problem. Those of you having the issue know what I am talking about.

TrIf you know someone having this issue, please pass this on to them.

 If you are unable to see Towleroad on a computer, but happen to see this post while viewing the site on an alternate computer, can you please leave the following information in the comments section of this post:

The type of computer you are using with its operating system, the browser on which you are trying to access the site and its version number, and any other data related to this issue you believe might be helpful to us in solving this problem. Also, if you can do a "view source" command on the page and send a screenshot of the info you receive to tips@towleroad.com we would appreciate it.

Please write 'Site Issues Info' in the subject line.

ps - we know the site does not load very quickly for the rest of you. It has to do with an aging template, and we're aware of it, and working on it.

Thanks and sorry for the interruption.

  1. This problem seems to affect me mainly on pages with embedded video, excluding YouTube, which is fine.

  2. I had this issue yesterday, but it seems ok this morning. Though some of the pictures come up as broken images.

  3. I had the blank page come up not on the main page but on the "Jump" page. Only occasionally. Pro Mac, OSX 10.4.11, intel, safari

  4. The site seems fine, but ditto to what Vaughn said -- your masthead comes up broken.

    Vista
    Chrome 2.0.172.31

  5. This is on an iMac running OS X 10.4.11, with Safari browser version 4 (beta):
    No blank screens, but sometimes going to either Page 2 or "next" actually ends up on a page with different content than is listed in the banner at the end of the previous page.
    Also, response time is often very slow ... on a uVerse line which is fine with other sites.

  6. Actually, my biggest problems lately (this wasn't a problem until the past few weeks) come when I click "Page 2" at the bottom of the page. The yellow table shows me what articles are supposed to be on the next page, but when I click "next" the first story that's supposed to be on Page 2 is gone. This happens like 50% of the time with whatever the first article is supposed to be on the second page.

    My problem is when I get transferred from your site to YouTube to view a video, it will not play. Yet while on YouTube, I can play other videos.

  8. I'm getting a broken masthead image, too. I'm using Chrome 2.0 on Windows 7.

  9. Window pops up with the message:

    An ActionScript error has occurred:
    SecurityError: Error #2123: Security sandbox violation: Loader.content: http://gayvideo.tapup.com/templates/yget/scripts/flvplayer_new.swf cannot access http://www.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01203/Elliot_1203172c.jpg. No policy files granted access.
    at flash.display::Loader/get content()
    at com.jeroenwijering.player::Model/resizeHandler()
    at com.jeroenwijering.player::Model/thumbHandler()

    Gives me the option to 'dismiss all' or 'continue'. Can't scroll down until I click on either option. I can see page, though - no blank page here. This happens every time I visit the site.

  10. I can load the page and see all the text, but am seeing all broken images. And when I attempt to view the images in another tab, it says the link is broken.

    I'm on Windows XP and am using chrome.

  11. I had loading problems about a month ago and thought the site was down. And then it's happened again sporadically for the past month.

    My solution is to delete any Towleroad cookies. Then the page seems to load fine. Whenever it stalls or doesn't load at all, I just delete the cookies.

    I had this problem with Safari 4 beta, but the full release that came out a few days ago seems to have fixed the problem for me.

  13. xp home
    internet explorer

    i love your site, but it ALWAYS ends up locking my computer up to the point that i have to shut it all the way down. i assumed it was from all the advertising loading.

  14. re: page 2 top articles not appearing at the top could be nothing more than between the time you loaded page 1 and scanned the articles another article was uploaded, which would mean the page 2 top article would be pushed down a step for every article uploaded since you started reading. Happens to me all the time because I am reading multiple sites so between loading page 1 and 2 can be anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour.

  16. One more thing: for some oddball reason, only some of the names in the comments are highlighted in yellow. The rest are in flat grey and hard to see.

  17. Though I haven't received blank pages while browsing this site, I should note that one of the larger problems with loading pages here is the tsunami of JavaScript called by various external functions. I try to disable as many as possible to help speed up page load times.

  18. An overall redesign is long overdue.

  19. Mark is correct. All those javascript modules on the right make the site heavy and increase page load times.

    Keep the ads. You certainly deserve to be paid for the work you do. But get rid of MSNBC, lijit, evri, ModUrban Media, and anything else that is unnecessary.

  20. I keep looking at the site for pictures of attractive men, and instead seeing Sacha Baron Cohen's ass. Is this a Javascript problem?

    Posted by: doh | Jun 12, 2009 12:34:00 PM

  21. Make sure it works in HTML 4 first, then add javascript to make things work better. Browsers all treat javascript differently, so you need HTML to work first. Likewise, javascript can be disabled in browsers.

    You can capture the header info of incoming page hits with all the info you are asking for. By putting timing variables at the top and bottom of the page, you can determine if the entire page loads or not for a particular hit and how long it took.

  23. I use Windows Vista Pro and IE7 on HP Touchsmart. Intermittent problems with black page. Also big problems seeing video when I use Firefox.

  24. I can't see the page, with safari, in my iphone

    Posted by: Helio | Jun 12, 2009 1:26:16 PM

  25. This page has 139 elements to load per Safari 4. There was one error but I cannot get to it right now.

    Is there a reason the page is made of so many separate elements?

    I browse this site with Firefox 2, Chrome, IE8 and I never had a rendering problem.
