Stampp Corbin Changes Tune, Drops Out of DNC LGBT Fundraiser
I posted this as an update to a post about the furor over the DOMA brief yesterday, but it's significant enough that the former head (during the campaign) of the Obama LGBT Leadership Council Stampp Corbin pulled out of the Democratic LGBT Fundraiser yesterday. He writes on his blog:
"Someone get me a Prozac. I ask, 'Mr. President how can you argue for the legality of DOMA, when you are for its repeal?' You really are talking out of both sides of your mouth and my community knows it...Unfortunately, I will see everything that the Obama administration
does for LGBT Americans through the lens of the DOMA brief. Meaning, I
will be waiting for the other proverbial shoe to drop, while praying
President Obama delivers on his promises...Mr. President, your DOMA mistake awakened a sleeping giant. He is mad
as hell and is not going to take it anymore. You better get LGBT
affirming legislation moving quickly or the coffers of the LGBT
community will be slammed shut on the fingers of your administration
and the DNC. You and the DNC may find themselves asking about our
donations 'if not now, when' as we have been asking about our rights
for the last few months."
Corbin's position is a distinct change of heart from the one he took a week ago right after the brief came out when debating Dan Savage on CNN. That video, AFTER THE JUMP...

Stampp, nice about-face after having loudly proclaimed fracture within the gay community to gay foes, and specifically undercutting Michelangelo, a leading voice for our cause.

It's shocking to hear Corbin so recently rattle off all of the disingenuous talking points cooked up by Obama Inc's Excuse Making Machine..."Obama can't OVERTURN DADT" [Savage never said he could.] ...."Clinton moved too fast" [Truth: he moved too slow.]..."He might not have the power to stop discharges." [Savage is right, he does.]...."You must be patient." [Tell that to Dan Choi and Sandy Tsao and Victor Fehrenbach and the 250+ others who've been discharged since Commander-in-Chief Obama took his oath; to those who'll be discharged TODAY and the next day and the next day and....].
But now that he's finally gotten over his ambivalence that preceded the Prozac comment....."When I wake up each morning, I feel a bit schizophrenic, 'I love Obama, I hate Obama, I am ambivalent about Obama'. It's maddening'."....we must applaud his extraordinary courage in so fiercely and publicly criticizing his friend since college ["You really are talking out of both sides of your mouth and my community knows it."], the husband of a woman he's been friends with since grade school, and imagine he will similarly see the light about the President and DADT.
The flames of the inferno that erupted after the DOJ's DOMA brief have obscured people's memories that just four days before that the DOJ defended DADT in another legal brief using the same homophobic arguments that were used by Sam Nunn and his henchmen to pass DADT in the first place.
Mr. President, it's time to stop discharges immediately. It's time to tell Congress that if Don't Ask, Don't Tell is not wrong, nothing is wrong.
