For Bruno, Out is Zee New In
With the controversy regarding The Advocate's current cover choice, I wonder what the reaction will be to Bruno on Out's August 2009 cover? It's an interesting comparison in that it represents another subject whose image has been argued to reflect either positively or negatively on LGBT people.
The ghost being homophobia.
Bruno (and not his creator, Sacha Baron Cohen) was interviewed for his feature by Mo Rocca, offering some of the same one-liners he tried out on Matt Lauer this morning on Today, like, "Did you know zat not one suicide bomber has ever blown zemselves up wearing Marc Jacobs?"
More Bruno after der jump...

I can tell you my opinion. I think it's a disgrace and he's doing nothing but giving Middle America everything they expect from gay people.

Five gay teens will be murdered because of this Out cover.

The movie is hysterical!

Between the Advocate and Out honoring if not enforcing middle America's perception of the LGBT community (see Charlotte, they're all like that...bunch of fucking homos) I'd have to say this is a sad day for the queer community. Bosie, you and your friends laugh all you want, because they're laughing right back at you, not with you. Maybe it's time for Soledad to do a documentary on what it means to be gay in America.

The audience I viewed it with (sneak preview) was 90-95% straight and they got that it was satire. Its so over the top that I don't see how anyone, even dumbshits, could see it any other way. Go with your friends and laugh your nuts off!

The gost in the room
The ghost being homophobia.
I would add another ghost is in the room
The ghost of the gay community's sissyphobia

"do a documentary on what it means to be gay in America."
Don't you mean what its like to be a gay Austrian in America?
Posted by: Sam | Jul 9, 2009 11:55:25 AM
Canada loves BRUNO!

Jeez. Lighten up. It's satire. Trust me, homophobes wouldn't be caught dead at this flick. Can you imagine the conversation in the lobby of the multiplex as Joe Sixpack encounters his buddies going into "The Hangover" while he heads off to see "Bruno"?
Posted by: Jonster | Jul 9, 2009 12:03:58 PM
Oh, Keith, you have in my hysterics! You bitch that that Bruno "enforces middle America's perception of the LGBT community," yet you have a website called PartyFavorz.net? Ya'll know I love me some irony, right?
Sweetheart, next time you're cutting lines on that mirror, take a good long look at the reflection.

Gay teens are murdered or commit suicide BECAUSE OF RELIGION.
Religion hurts - make it stop.

I'd be more interested in the tantalizing cover lead "The Secret Life of Gay Boxers". Hmmm. Now, is that boxers as in Fruit of the Loom? Or, boxers as in pugilistic? Or, boxers as in canine (for example, my two boxers named Buddy and Big Boy)? Just asking so I guess I'll buy the mag.

Hey Crispy Creme, thanks for the plug. However, my website is specifically geared towards a very narrow segment of society. That is, house music lovers gay or straight. Yes, I do create images that appeal to a subset of the gay community on some of the podcasts, namely circuit boys, but that is called marketing. I also understand that Bruno's shtick is satire. After watching half of the first one with my three nephews and then getting up and leaving the theater, I have to say that I personally find his brand of satire disgusting, misogynistic and yes, offensive. I'm sorry, but there is nothing funny about sodomizing young girls (taken from the first Bruno). If 6th grade cheap, immature and unnecessarily vulgar one liners makes you laugh, then good for you. Nevertheless, I have a right to exercise my opinion just as certain as you just did.

Middle America really expects that we all wear chain link, speak with a fake Austrian accent, and are played by a well-known British comedian? I think there's a greater risk of Middle American thinking we're idiots because we're such terrified sissies (most of the terror a reaction to a movie we haven't yet seen) that we believe a fictional character has the power to control the entire world's perception of us.

OK, Sacha is a comic genius. Fearless, shocking, absurd, etc. So to Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and perhaps Joan Rivers.
But why the hell is Sarah Silverman on that list?
And Keith, Bruno isn't a sequel.

I practically live for 6th grade cheap, immature and unnecessarily vulgar one liners.
I also love farting.

Hi Crispy. Which screening are you going to see tomorrow? Or did you get tickets to a midnight screening tonight to be the first in line?
I was wondering why you seem to have as much of a horse in this "Bruno" race as I do. I haven't noticed you post for other Towleroad articles (based at least on days there have been "Bruno" postings).
It's cool that you've got your bitchy evil queen thing going (its one of the most endearing stereotypes of gay men and I'm glad to see you embrace it). But do you ever agree with people or attempt to have a dialogue with them, rather than just hide anonomously (turn that grey "CRISPY" to orange some time).
As far as I'm concerned, "Bruno" has been defanged, from reports of major reshoots to appease gays and reviews of the movie itself. Wait for the DVD release to see all that stuff you were really hoping shocked.
I'm just sitting back, enjoying the sport, knowing that the "Bruno" production was forced (financially through reshoots and PR soothing) to address the push back from myself and others.

Why can't gay people lighten up about anti-gay bigotry, you've faced it for thousands of years from us haterosexuals what's another couple hours?
Are gay people surprised that Out magazine or any other supposed "gay" magazine has a heterosexual on the cover? Practically every "gay" magazine has a heterosexual on the cover.
Heterosexuals are outsiders with prejudices to homosexuality. They are not capable of knowing what is anti-gay. This movie only serves to validate heterosexuals wrong and bigoted prejudices of gay men.
Actually look and READ at the data for anti-gay prejudice. You will find that heterosexuals do not understand anti-gay bigotry.

It's all kind of tired, isn't it? The entitled voices with the chip on their shoulder screaming that if you don't like it you're a tired old thing, and the shrill hand wringers that associate any image other than a Lifetime movie portrayal of a sensitive gay teen suffering nobly in good lighting will lead to murder. The fact is, the kind of people who will stomp you to death behind the feed store will do so because you're different from them, and they always will. In my humble opinion both sides have some valid points: Over-the-top satire or no, it IS a minstrel show, but it's also a thumbed nose to some pretty entrenched attitudes about gay people.
This movie is not about homophobia, it's about MAKING MONEY as %99.9 of movies are. To ascribe a deeper motivation is probably not accurate. And to think that it will prevent or incite violence or tolerance is naive.

Oh goodie, Mike Skiff is back. I was beginning to wonder where you were. I assumed you were on Air Force One interviewing Robert Gibbs.
"I was wondering why you seem to have as much of a horse in this "Bruno" race as I do."
Uh, because I have a sense of humor.
PS: The reviews for Bruno started pouring in yesterday (from real journalists, not made-up media sites like yours). They are overwhelmingly positive.

I have exhausted my tolerance of "middle America." We can never expect to have any effect on the their perception of us when they choose ignorance over reality.
Why would it matter if all gays WERE chain-link wearing, Austrian-accented fashion victims? What's it to anyone else? If I want to talk with a lisp and wear a leather mini skirt, so be it.
"Middle America" is fat and raising stupid children (statistically speaking). So f* them.
Posted by: Stephen | Jul 9, 2009 12:55:14 PM
@Stephen: so true.
@Keith. I think you were talking about Borat. This is the only Bruno movie there is.
@Handwringers: lighten up. This movie isn't going to affect LGBT civil rights one way or another. Everyone on both sides should write their dissertations on something else. This movie is about making people laugh for a few weeks in July.

JAUNTYJOHN: Thanks for the intelligent comments. I completely agree.
Posted by: Matt | Jul 9, 2009 1:11:01 PM
Keith--
Defensive much?
You claim that partyfavors.net is a Web site about house music? HAHAHA. Now that's funny.
You're clearly targeting the meth-using "community" to make a fast buck.
And you criticize Bruno and Borat?
oh hahaha
PS, asshole, speed kills.
