Well... I won't say he was our greatest hope but he was the one many gay bloggers (Americablog) ,with the exception of Towleroad, pushed. After the primaries, he was our only hope.

@ PEKEMO - who needs to grow up? The Advocate? I think this is exactly the sort of story they should be doing, and it was well-balanced and well-written. What do you want?
Posted by: Strepsi | Aug 4, 2009 7:40:08 PM
What a horrible take-off of the original Shepard Fairey image (not that I expected much more from the Sadvocate's art department). Also, last time I checked, the man had about three plus years left in office. Let's stop playing the finger-pointing victims long enough to realize that he's got more than just our issues and problems on his plate right now. While I understand the feeling of being "tired of waiting", this constant crybabying in the media only serves to further the stereotype of gays as being shrill, self-absorbed whiners.
Posted by: Roman | Aug 4, 2009 7:45:42 PM
Oh good lord! The gay community has turned into the biggest group of myopic, self-centered whiners. I think two wars, the failing economy, North Korea, Iran and the auto industry are all FAR more important things for the man to worry about right now. He'll get to us. It's only been half a year.....have patience!
Posted by: Steven | Aug 4, 2009 7:46:07 PM
This is the kind of story they SHOULD be running in the hopes that every gay person wises up to the fact that Obama doesn't give a shit about us right now and probably isn't going to until he's forced to. So yeah, force him - call your congress-people, march, make noise, DO something. Don't expect anything from Obama just because he SAYS he's going to do something. That's not enough.
Posted by: craig | Aug 4, 2009 7:47:36 PM
obama hasn't been in office for 6 months yet and the gay/lesbian community is ready to give up.
*head exploding*
this is why i don't read gay/lesbian blogs. because MANY gay/lesbians in our community only think of THEMSELVES and no one else like the HRC, The Advocate.

@THE REALIST: "...the one many gay bloggers, with the exception of Towleroad, pushed..."
Huh? After Andy & Co. practically rimmed him in the window of Macy's?

Steven and Roman... When the majority of the country supports lifting DADT, It doesn't take and act of Congress to stop loss the policy and it doesn't take 30 seconds to sign the executive order.
The Gay community is not impatient. We are out of patience. Yes, those other things are important. No one denies that. But what are our gay soldiers, theoretically, fighting for? Presumably, the rights for all Americans. Rights they currently do not enjoy.
In my view, the only "whiney" self- centered group in the gay community are those of you who are too lazy to get off your tired asses and march, be vocal and
be pissed.
President Obama is trying his best. Our country, nay, our WORLD is still reeling from the 8-year-long gang rape/bukkake that was the Dubya presidency. Do I think Barack Obama can do better on all counts, from gay rights to health care? Yes. Do I regret voting for him? No. This is his first year of office, and he is trying to clean up Dubya's shit. I think that given what he's up against, he's doing a decent job.
@ Realist: Well said. We are not being impatient. When the only things out of the administration for the GLBT community have been negative.. (DOMA brief) then our patience has rightfully run its course.
@Hestillouronlyhope: HRC is myopic and only thinking of us?? Umm no. HRC has their head so far up the politicians behind they have forgotten who they are there for.
Still.. its ironic to go from Perez Hilton to this..

The Advocate is a joke these days. They bounce back and forth in editorial direction. They have no idea what they want to be. Bye, bye Advocate.

@THE REALIST: "...the one many gay bloggers, with the exception of Towleroad, pushed..."
I agree with your take on Obama, but I actually thought you were going for sarcasm with this quote. I'll stick with Anon in SoCal's assessment on that matter. To Andy Towle's credit, he was quick to jump off the bandwagon as soon as the elections were already over and Obama's true self began to show through. And once he saw other elite gays doing the same and realized that it would be safe to follow.
@ Roman -- "What a horrible take-off of the original Shepard Fairey image"
LOL...you used the words "Shepard Fairey" and "original" in the same statement. That's hilarious.

Obama doesn't give a sh*t about us??? HEALTHCARE not enough of importance to all of us???? SERIOUSLY LAZY HOMOS...get off ur butts and get out and work for ur laws to change STOP BLAMING SOMEONE ELSE for ur lazy and stupid self.
I STAND by Obama...So far he is doing what he promised but doing it baby steps...HE HAS ALOT ON HIS PLATE!!!!
Posted by: Bosie | Aug 4, 2009 8:46:09 PM
Obviously he will do more ... look at how much he and the Democratic Congress have already done ... he is about to sign the Matthew Shepard Hate Crime Bill into the Matthew Shepard Hate Crime LAW.... celebrate that.
He started advances for same sex couples WITHIN the Federal Government... along with Clinton at State .... celebrate that.
He had spoken out against Dont Ask Dont Tell and has started work on that ... (as for those getting booted ... most knew when getting in what they were getting into and agreed to Dont Ask Dont Tell)
I cancelled my subscription a year ago ... do not miss the paper copy ... a very immature publication these days .... and even they admit they do not do covers for the readers .... they do it as a billboard on magazine stands

I seem to recall the Advocate being very silent during the AIDS epidemic, not even considering it newsworthy, at the peril of many gay men's lives.
They were as silent on gay issues then as Obama is today.

Posted by: JimmyD | Aug 4, 2009 7:23:39 PM
wow. are they trying to be shocking? because the advocate had that hypocrite Perez Hilton on last month's cover.
who's gonna take them seriously now? because they're saying the obvious? boo.

Is The Advocate _trying_ to send the message that gay people hate black people?
Yikes.
