Conservative Politico: Playboy Turns Straight Men Gay

Playboy

Senator Tom Coburn's (R-OK) chief of staff Michael Schwartz told a group of listeners at the Values Voter Summit on Saturday that "all pornography is homosexual pornography" and that magazines like Playboy could lead heterosexual boys to homosexuality.

He related a story about Jim Johnson, a friend of his who turned an old hotel into a hospice for gay men dying of AIDS: "One of the things he said to me, that I think is an astonishingly insightful remark… he said ‘All pornography is homosexual pornography, because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards. Now, think about that. And if you tell an 11-year-old boy about that, do you think he’s going to want to get a copy of Playboy? I’m pretty sure he’ll lose interest. That’s the last thing he wants! You know, that’s a good comment, it’s a good point, and it’s a good thing to teach young people.”

  1. It just never ceases to amaze how fucking stupid so many people really are.

  2. He's absolutley right about Playboy. That's why all teenage boys should only look at Playgirl magazine...for incentive, you know.

I know all Conservatives are not right-wing kooks, but, my God....

  3. Just another smug Christianist --- see now they are not just better than "the gays", they are better than people who enjoy porn.

They progression always does and will lead to murder --- religious fundamentalism is evil.

  4. that's funny....at 11, i was reading playgirl and the hustler comics. the latter must make me a misogynist. funny.

  5. I guess I kind of agree...I remember finding my father's playboys at a young age. and i also remember looking for pictures of the guys, but sadly there were none. However, there was an ad for calvin klein or something where the guy was exposing one side of his chest - and that's the page that captivated my attention for quite a while.
Oh, and to comment on this guy's complete ignorance, he says at one point that the NIH has commissioned studies (assuming through grant money) to prove that my gayness is genetic and all it's proven is it's not genetic. That about sums up the issue of our devolution away from science in today's United States. Just because something cannot be proven today doesn't mean it is false. These are the same idiots who complain that tech jobs are going overseas. Well, 20 years ago we were attracting top scientists from around the world (and we still do to an extent), but when these fools create an anti-research/science environment around anything not related to the bible, they frighten some of the more inquisitive people away and even chase our scientists to more openly inquisitive nations. So while much of the world has opened up due to the internet and global communication, we are retreating with these men and women of an obstinate god to an isolationist nation.

  6. Sounds to me like Schwartz might be a little too familiar with this theory!

  7. Using that wing-nut's logic, boys should starting reading Playboy, so they'll "turn straight". Even more, he just killed the wing-nuts' argument that the "gay lifestyle" is a "choice". One wonders what "research" went into such findings! One hopes that all of us will remember this past summer and lunacy such as this when November 2010 rolls around. The thought of those people being voted back into power frightens me.

  8. So that's why every one under the age of 25 who's looked at porn on the internet since they were 12 are all turning gay.

    /sarcasm

  9. I wonder if this is the same Jim Johnson responsible for these blog posts

    http://www.gayagenda.com/author/jim-johnson/

And if he would really want his name associated with the Value Voters Summit.

  10. I'm a gay man with PLENTY of straight guy friends. I can say with 100% certainty that my straight friends that look at porn are looking at those gross titties (gross to me lol) and have NO interest in the guy who may or may not be in the photo.

Michael Schwartz is most likely a latent closet case.

  11. I used to rip the Jim Palmer ads outta my dad's Playboys and hide them under my bed.

  13. I suppose he's right! I remember flipping through my friend's Hustler disinterestedly until a tiny shot of a fully naked guy at some nudist convention caught my eye. I was never the same.

    What a fuckin' idiot.

  14. If Playboy makes you gay, do Penthouse, Hustler and Screw get you into fisting and water sports?

    Posted by: MikeMick | Sep 21, 2009 1:59:12 PM

  15. Yeah, considering what's come out about a lot of these holier-than-thou types, I'm sure this guy has had A LOT of talks with 11 year old boys about pornography. Hopefully some of 'em will soon start pressing charges.

  16. Not enough people have been to the Kinsey institute--where the REAL sex research happens.

  17. Epic logic fail. Turns sexuality inward? WTF does that even mean?

Posted by: Bill in SoCal | Sep 21, 2009 2:30:35 PM

  18. These folks need to ignore the idiot charlatan....instead march over to Indiana to the Kinsey institute. That's where the REAL sex research happens.

  20. ..and yet the nitwits sit there and take this in like its part of the bible.....sickos all of them.

  21. I am struggling to understand how he thinks this works (probably impossible, but still...). I guess he assumes that being attracted to others of the same gender is the same thing as being attracted to yourself--that old canard of homosexuality being tantamount to narcissism and masturbation. But to believe that, you would also have to think that all men are indistinguishable from each other. That's a pretty dim view of his own gender.

    Posted by: Thomasina | Sep 21, 2009 3:40:02 PM

  22. so, he's saying that if you masturbate using the (hetero) pornography...and you are touching your own dick...it is considered the same as touching another man's dick...and that makes it homosexual??

    Posted by: todd | Sep 21, 2009 3:47:22 PM

  23. Wow.

  24. A new study came out, it's somewhere on Andrew Sullivan's blog, that said porn works because you put yourself in the scene and your brain allows you to "participate" even though you're not there. This is exactly opposite of focusing sexuality inward. But imagine that, a Tom Coburn staffer being ignorant. And Coburn is waaayyy better than Inhofe, the other OK senator. Scary.
