Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig Scold Cell Phone User During Show
Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman, starring together in the police drama A Steady Rain on Broadway, interrupted their show on Wednesday twice when a cell phone went off in the audience, asking the audience member to shut it off.
On the other hand, how bout the video camera (with zoom) that caught the whole episode?

completely unprofessional.

Jeff, sure, they could have ignored it the 1st time, but the SECOND time? Ridiculous. That audience member should have been embarrassed.

Yea that audience member should be fired!

unprofessional or not, let's concentrate more on the asshole with the cellphone who's disrespectful to the actors and rest of the audience. i swear if i owned that theater their ass would have been thrown out immediately.

Where was house management? Those people should have been escorted out. There's absolutely no excuse for this oafish behavior!

Jeff, Katherine Hepburn scolded an audience member who was snapping photos during a play. There are times when it is appropdiate to drop character and this was one of them.

Theaters MUST start throwing people out for this. I know, some say that will create a bigger disturbance, but until people learn that they will be removed from the show they paid for, this will never stop. I do not agree that Craig & Jackman were unprofessional. Should performers just carry on while phones ring away? Keep going as audience members answer and chat?

Why doesn't the theatre REMOVE these people? Or at least confiscate the phone? It should be incumbent upon the theatre to handle audience members who are distracting other audience members and/or the cast. The theatre is at fault for not handling it and for making the actors on stage handle it.

I saw "A Steady Rain" Saturday night, and the show is essentially what you see in the video—just Craig and Jackman alone on the stage recounting a gripping tale for 90 minutes. The whole story depends on what images the the two actors are able to conjure inside audience members' heads.
A cell phone ring or camera flash is annoying, distracting, and unacceptable during any theatrical performance. But during a show this intense it's really unforgivable. Before the show, ushers even go up and down the aisles reminding anyone who's using a cell phone to be sure and turn it off.
The play and production are excellent BTW.

The people seated within three rows of anyone whose cell phone rings in a theatre should be legally allowed to beat the shit out of them until they flee the premises---

Unprofessional! It's up to the management to correct and eject the offensive individual.I attended a performance of "A Lady and Her Music"w/ Lena Horne where she berated some one for coughing-she was soundly booed and had to leave the stage. She returned later, apologized and went on w/ the performance. They should have ignored the interruption and kept going.

Jeff dear....your comment of 'completely unprofessional' is hopefully not referring to the actors on stage. If so, you need to understand that there are some places and situations where it is OK to place your cell on silent. During a live performance is DEFINITELY one of them. The other audience members paid to see and hear the actors, not someone's cell phone. Enabling this type of behavior by defending it only dilutes any levels of respect that is left in our society.
If you were referring to the audience member who allowed the phone to continue ringing, then that person should have been asked to leave the theater.

Yes, throw the audience member out. But the actors should act like professionals. People sometimes forget to turn it off. Deal with it like the professionals you're supposed to be,

Bravo to these actors. People carrying cell-phones/blackberries and beepers are often self-absorbed and not-in-the-least concerned about disruptions the ringing or the light can cause.
I say, kick them out of the theaters..maybe then they will leave their communication devices at home or at least turn them off during their next public outing.
Whatever happened to consideration?

david t.. how in the hell can someone say they forgot when it's stated at the beginning of the performance to turn. off. all. cellphones.
and it's stated in the Playbill to do the same thing.
i'm sorry, but there's no excuse.

I think that theatres should install those cell phone jammers.

Coughing is a little different than your cell phone ringing--one is more easily helped than the other.

Jeff: If Patti Lupone does it on stage, it's professional.

The only thing that would have been more entertaining than this (given the cell interruption) would have been to see Hugh Jackman launch himself into the audience and bodyslam the dumb **tch with the cellphone. He showed AMAZING restraint in my opinion.

Jeff and Robert... it was ENTIRELY appropriate for the actors to berate that asshole in the audience... letting it ring.. and ring... and ring.... so much so that they had to wait for, what.. a full minute, while the imbecile being addressed still did not turn it off? No-one can appreciate the acting, the play or the characters while a fuckhead in the audience is being so inconsiderate!

jeff s, please forward to me via this site the poll you took of those who "forget" to turn it off. i'm sure you'll find an array of reasons. and if you have trouble comprehending my post, i'm not saying they shouldn't suffer consequences. i'm saying i expect actors to be professional in the face of such rudeness. i expect that to be included in the price of my ticket.
