Maine Ethics Commission: Not Enough Evidence to Investigate Fundraising by Anti-Gay Groups

Malone

A complaint by Fred Karger of Californians Against Hate regarding Stand for Marriage Maine's disclosure of donor names has been rejected by the Maine Ethics Commission:

"The recommendation goes to the five-member commission, which votes Thursday on whether to launch an investigation. Karger...says groups contributing to the Stand for Marriage campaign are not reporting the names of many donors as the law requires. Stand for Marriage is leading the push for a people's veto of Maine's gay marriage law Nov. 3. Ethics commission Executive Director Jonathan Wayne said Tuesday the staff didn't think Karger presented enough evidence supporting his claims to justify an investigation."

In related news, Catholic Bishop Richard Malone's (above) request that every Catholic Mass across the state play a video "homily" asking churchgoers to fight against marriage equality was the subject of one editorial in the Portland Press Herald  from a dissenting Catholic:

"This intrusion leaves me and other Catholics who have very real disagreements with the bishop's position (many Catholics believe that all discrimination is injustice), and with his making the same-sex marriage issue a priority (of all the places the bishop could be investing his time, energy, and resources), with few options if we are to act as our consciences would dictate. As a Catholic whose conscience directs me to resist the bishop's campaign, my choices were to either not attend Mass on the Sunday that the video was shown, or to demonstrate my dissent in some way that would necessarily disrupt a time of prayer and communion (by walking out during the Mass, for example)."

  1. Quoting Bishop Malone:

"In fact, the Catholic Church teaches emphatically that individuals and society must respect the basic human dignity of all person including those with a homosexual orientation. Homosexual persons have a right to, and deserve, our respect, compassion, understanding, and defense against prejudice and abuse."
    ____

It's official, folks! This has become the Church equivalent of the "In fact, some of my best friends are gay" argument used by bigots to justify their homophobic actions / remarks.

  2. I would get up and walk out, what's wrong with that. The Catholic Church, as shepherds of the faithtul, have relied for 2000 years on the flock sitting their listenting to their control-oriented crap. Speak your conscience with your feet, and do it before the collection plate is passed!

The Catholic Church = the world's largest organized crime network.

  4. What if you're not a Christian? He's equating civil/government marriage with religious/church marriage as if everyone suscribed to HIS belief system. Faulty argument disguised in a robe in front of a crucifix.

  5. "demonstrate my dissent in some way that would necessarily disrupt a time of prayer and communion"

Well, the hierarchy will have already done that with the video. *shrug* I appreciate the support, but would he even show up to mass every week if the catholic church was frequently making racist attacks on some racial minority?

  6. Oh for the good old days...

"Homosexuals and pro-abortionists belonging to the groups ACT-UP and WHAM (Women's Health Action Mobilization) stormed New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral on December 10, 1989, disrupting Cardinal John O'Connor's mass by screaming and desecrating the consecrated host by throwing it on the ground and stomping on it. Outside, hundreds more screamed and burned Cardinal O'Connor in effigy for his public stand against AIDS education and condom distribution, as well as its opposition to abortion. Some of the placards displayed slogans such as; "MARY SHOULD HAVE HAD AN ABORTION; "CHRIST WAS A HOMOSEXUAL;" and "DEATH TO THE CHURCH!" After the invasion of St. Patrick's cathedral, ACT-UP issued a press statement saying that its cause is "... important enough [to allow us] to invade any space, to disrupt any speech."

  7. Much as they want to deny it, the response of Maine Catholics in this matter is far from monolithic. Not sure if you've seen this, but there is a group of Catholics organizing to counter the "official" church stance in Maine. Their website is here: http://religiouscoalition.org/

And for a little more information, an article, "Local Catholics work to uphold gay marriage law": http://www.seacoastonline.com/articles/20090917-NEWS-909170416

  8. After all the scandals the Catholic Church doesn't have the moral authority to say what day it is, nevermind make hateful remarks about someone's gay son or daughter.

I can not believe the gall of this man to even show his face now, never mind talk smack about people who are as full of God's grace as himself.

  9. I don't get something, and I would love some opinions here.....

When church leaders (or any anti-equality figurehead) speak about 'respect' for homosexuals, while protecting the idea of marriage between a man and a woman, why doesn't someone (anyone) ever ask them why they don't get 'Pro-active' and start pushing for civil unions or domestic partnerships for gay couples (since it protects ALL of what they claim to represent).

It would very quickly point out that they don't care about respect for us, and that this really is about bigotry. Am I missing something?

  10. I feel sorry for the billions of NON-christians in the world, guess they cant get married. I find it very telling that he call's it "CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE" - frankly, if the catholic church doesnt wish to allow same-sex marriage recognition in their church services, thats fine. The argument here is CIVIL marriage and someone needs to school the bishop in the very REAL difference.

  12. "A same sex union can never realize the unique and full potential that the marital relationship expresses." But someone in a robe who lives only with other men, gets fed and clothed by other people, follows his orders from a former Hitler Youth living in a golden palace in Italy and leads a "celibate' life knows? EPIC FAIL OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS. Signed Former Roman Catholic, PROUD ATHEIST.

  13. I'm all for Freedom of Speech, but the Bishop seems to be encroaching into Politics, especially since he's doing this from the pulpit. I don't think he really should be going there, lest he wants the government to be encroaching into the Catholic Church.
