Springfield, Missouri to Remove Law Against Gay Sex Solicitation

The City Council of Springfield, Missouri is set to remove a 1976 gay sex solicitation ordinance.

Missouri Says Ordinance No. 78-224: "It shall be unlawful for any person in a public place to invite, entice, persuade or to address a person of the same sex for the purpose of inviting, enticing or persuading such person to commit [a sexual act]".

The News-Leader reports: "Ordinance No. 78-224, which makes it illegal to solicit sex from a member of the same gender, came under fire in June during the annual PrideFest celebration, and the outcry led City Councilman Doug Burlison to call for its removal. The city, instead, follows a different solicitation ordinance that covers all...The potential removal of the solicitation ordinance drew praise in July from the local Gay and Lesbian Center of the Ozarks. 'We believe that such laws need to be reworded to include anyone regardless of sexual orientation,' [Michael Siepel, communications coordinator for the center] added in his July statement. 'With that, if the ordinance is not removed, it should be worded to the effect that it no longer singles out one group of citizens, but to include all citizens. We believe, however, that other ordinances within Springfield (i.e. 78-225 and 78-229) address this matter and that the ordinance should be removed completely.' City Attorney Dan Wichmer has said ordinance No. 78-224 is unconstitutional and has not been enforced in years. He said the city follows an ordinance that bars sex in public places and is not exclusive."

Of course, idiot wingnuts are somehow worried that by doing this the city is approving same-sex marriage.

Assured Burlison: "This is not a measure approving gay marriage. We're not giving gay people any additional rights. This is a measure, in my mind, that keeps everyone on a level playing field and keeps social engineering out of local law."

  2. The law was archaic and outrageous no matter who it applies to. It makes no sense to suggest it should be reworded to apply to everyone. If it were actually applied to everyone, virtually the entire population of Springfield would be in jail. (Every man who has ever approached his wife to hint that he would like to have sex would be arrested). We all know that if it were worded to include "everyone," the police would have the power to arrest ANYONE and the only ones they would arrest are whoever they happen to be prejudiced against (whether they be gays or blacks or some cop's hated ex-brother-in-law.)

It was beyond time to remove this law from the books. It's too bad (and no surprise) that the usual freedom-hating nuts make their usual stink about it.

  3. Then you are missing out on some beautiful countryside, and a wonderful cultured cityscape.

I'm originally from the east coast, and I was born in California before I moved to said east coast. Then moved back to California in my late teens before I moved to St. Louis.

I attend school in Springfield, MO currently. And while, springfield is rather bigoted, it's also a college town, and we have just as many liberal college students as we do religious townies. We have a nice arts scene, First Friday Art Walk downtown is always a nice change of pace from the pub crawls and whatnot.

And St. Louis and Kansas City are both wonderful cities.

Compare St. Louis Forrest Park to NYC Central Park, and you will be pleasantly surprised. Our museums are all free, and filled with monet's and picasso's etc. Our Zoo is considered the best zoo in the country. We attend the theatre at comparable rates to Manhattanites, in fact being one of the only cities in america to do so.

So instead of calling yourself a disgusted american, you should call yourself a bigoted american.

I was at that pridefest. We discussed those issues. And our "bigoted" conservative libertarian Doug Burlison is at least trying to help in his own way. When was the last time one of your conservatives tried to help you?

  4. Well said, Missouri Transplant. Disgusted American, I found your comment extremely offensive. We may have some archaic laws, but that doesn't mean our state deserves such an odious epithet. Missouri has a lot to be proud of and deserves respect for it.

There are plenty of progressives in Missouri. Remember we voted both times for Clinton, have a Democratic governor, and an outstanding Democratic Senator (Claire McCaskill). We even have a transgender inclusive hate crimes law.
