Aa1

American Apparel, who introduced "Legalize Gay" T-shirts last year, continues on its activist bent with two new designs featuring images from the West Hollywood gay pride parade in 1984, and an anti-homophobia protest that took place in Anaheim in 1989.

  1. Is it just me or does that shadow on one of the guy's butt look like a large, curved erect penis? Hmmm, maybe that's not by accident?

  2. Does anyone know if American Apparel shares any part of the revenue from the sale of these shirts with any GLBT organizations, or are they just exploiting trends here? I didn't see anything on their website...

  3. You know what HW -- I don;t even mind if they don't. Because simply making and stocking the items is a positive political move.

The very sight of those shirts in a store is enough to send mothers in many parts of the U.S. SCREAMING from the store and to their local Pastor -- and that enough is reason to applaud it!

  4. They're probably just exploiting trends...

I mean: if it *really* wanted to do something worthwhile, the company would just give a big check to a gay rights organization AND have a special section dealing with gay rights on its website.

    No messing around with t-shirts!

  5. they make shirts supporting us???

that means its okay that the owner of the company sexually harasses and mistreats female employees!

the sexism is canceled out! thanks aa!

  6. Those shirts are hideous. I don't care if they had gay baby puppies on them, they're still unsightly.

  7. BUTT Magazine sent me one of these shirts...not sure if I'll ever wear it, but it is a striking image for a t-shirt. And yes, Dov Charney is still creepy.

  8. the shirts aren't necessarily ugly, some people just aren't comfortable enough with certain forms of design in clothing to be able to wear them casually.

i am totally getting one of these.

  9. I agree, the shirts are hideous. I have also heard negative things about the management of this company and that would make me think twice about choosing to spend money with at their stores.

  10. B-rod -- that is a dark t-shirt tucked into the guy's back pocket of his jeans -- not a Rohrshot for you to get all worked up about!

  11. A company shows support for a cause by dedicating interesting and attention-grabbing designs on their product, and people behind the cause are complaining?

It's a business, and no, it doesn't have to show its support financially. And you don't have to wear it, or even like it.

Why don't you go bemoan something in a productive way? Maybe in a few years they'll come out with, "I sit on my ass and read Towleroad" t-shirts.

  12. They are actually supporting the cause...

  13. Though not perfect, American Apparel is quite the supporter or LGBT issues. Thanks for the link above, (legalizegay). They stood up to a lot of outside pressure when they quite publicly defended gay rights and actively sought to overturn Prop8. They identify that a reasonable amount of their employees and a great percentage of their customer base is of the alternative lifestyle.

Though it's definitely not my style, I do like their simple and classic t-shirts...though I dont know, the protest one is growing on me...
