Did Kylie Minogue Raid Lady Gaga's Closet?

Kylie

Kylie Minogue kicked off her North American tour in Oakland, California last night. Some are accusing the Australian diva of borrowing Gaga's look. And then there's this.

  2. Really? Kylie biting GaGa's style? Really? Why is it that Lady GaGa keeps being trumpeted like she is so original and the greatest thing since sliced bread. Kylie has been doing this gig for years before young Miss GaGa. If you look at any of her tours from years gone by..... Kylie is always rocking some fantastical get-up or another. Wow...it's a corset! Wow...it's mirrored! Wow...Lady GaGa is not the first to do this! Sigh. PS- Nothing against "Lady Giggles". She's fab but nothin' new, honey.

  3. Watching that light show, I'm pretty sure I just had an ecstasy flashback. Does anyone have any gum?

  4. I agree with the other commenters. Kyle has been doing this for years. Anyone remember the concert where the costumes were inspired by the Borg from Star Trek? She was pretty much the Borg Queen.

  5. I was there and the show was awesome!

  6. yeeeaaahhh ok. Kylie is ripping off Gaga. Right. Because as we all know, Lady Gaga birthed the entire universe when she took her first breath of life.

Anyone remember Kylie's Fever tour? I'd say LG was a LOT more influenced by that than Kylie was by some random outfit LG wore in some odd photo.

Anyway, thanks for posting the video, Andy. It's great to have Kylie here in the states finally!

  7. But Lady Gaga didn't lift this look from George Michael's "Too Funky" and umpteen other tours and videos in between? If one is going to cry foul, know what foul you're crying about.

  8. Sigh indeed. Kylie's been doing this shit for longer than most.

    Respect.

  9. You got your musings backward: Gaga emulates Kylie.

  10. Don't forget that Beyonce is pulling off this look, too, as Sasha Fierce.

  11. Uh, Jean Paul Gaultier designed Kylie's costumes, so perhaps that's where the question of influence should go.

    Gees, you guys.

  13. Ok Ok Ok Please Stop this!

All great artists borrow from one another, this is how a group of artists form what is known as an Art Movement. Heard of it?

So a little art history lesson kiddies...

Impressionists - Were they stealing from one another? No, they were creating a new way to look at the world. Did they borrow and copy from each other? Of course they did, but each one was adding their own unique style, interpretation, and subject matter, thus creating their unique style.

Frank Lloyd Wright, Misson Style, Tiffany, and Macintosh - Were they borrowing and copying ideas and concepts from one another? The answer: YES! of course they were. But like the Impressionists, they added their own unique style and interpretation. Have you ever thought wow Tiffany's and Wright's art glass looks very similar? Well maybe that's because each of their art glass was made in the same glass factory but on opposite ends of the same room. Do you think it's going to be similar?

Picasso and Matisse. MOMA mounted an entire exhibit on the similarities between these 2 artists. Look it up and learn.

Speaking of Picasso, well and Frank Lloyd Wright too, the year that Picasso and Braque came out with their cubists paintings, Frank LLoyd Wright created his version of cubist's house in Oak Park.

Look at art and design through-out history they are hundreds of comparisons, this is how it works people!

So Kylie stealing Lady Gaga's look? Maybe Kylie thought, "Wow I really like that dress that Lady Gaga wore, I would love to wear something like that for my opening number."

Who cares who's first, second or third ... maybe they all are creating something a movement? Only time will tell.

  14. Pop is derivative. Gaga pulled her entire wardrobe from Roisin Murphy.

  15. Christ...obviously someone knows nothing about kylie.

  16. Lady CaCa has been "borrowing" from other artists, not the other way around. She's as original as Wonder Bread.

  17. She's just a triumph...surviving breast cancer and now THROWIN' DOWN! God bless you, Kylie -- you're one in a million billion.

  18. I've always thought Picasso's "Disco Stick" pieces were highly underrated.

  19. It reminds me more of Beyonce's "Sweet Dreams" video. Or the Svedka Vodka robot girl.

  20. Boys, can't we just celebrate them all? And besides, aren't they all rippiing off Fritz Lang's Metropolis?

    Posted by: Gregoire | Oct 1, 2009 3:50:05 PM

  21. LMAO Kylie copying beyonce??

During the Fever tour she came out of this robot armour thing while performing come into my world.

Years later beyonce is pulling the same stunt at an awards show.

But yet...Kylie is totally copying Bey *eye roll*

  22. >>Why is it that Lady GaGa keeps being trumpeted like she is so original and the greatest thing since sliced bread. Kylie has been doing this gig for years before young Miss GaGa<<

Not just Kylie, Madonna, Britney (yeah, Britney) and if you really want to take it back, Dale Bozzio from Missing Persons. Personally, I have nothing against the GaGa, though she took a while to grow on me; but all these kiddies that think she's the poster girl for originality, really need to go back in time and see how today's music and styles are nothing more than 80s lite. Next...

  23. LADY GAGA IS HOT SHIT! KYLIE HAS HAD HER OWN STYLE, TOO! THEY'RE BOTH GREAT

    Posted by: KFLO | Oct 1, 2009 5:41:07 PM

  24. Basques...underwear as outerwear....Fritz Langs Metropolis... LISTEN to yourselves!!! You know where all this inspiration has come from?? One woman....MADONNA! Gaultier worked with Madonna WAAAAAAAAY back in 1987 for her whos that girl tour and came up with popularising the Basque as outerwear for her concerts, nobody wore that stuff before Madonna! As for Kylie doing this stuff for years?? WHAT A JOKE!!! Her live reportoire goes back to 2001's Fever tour!! The one prior to that, Lets Get To It Tour in 1991 coincidentaly took a lambasting for its blatant references to Madonnas Legendary Blond ambition from 1990. As for Frits Langs Metropolis, Madonn used that theme in 1989 in her Express Yourself video and Blond Ambition Tour. They are just replicating Madonna's formula. NEITHER of these two NOR Beyonce are being revolutionary wearing wacky power basque's, Madonna kick-started the whole Basque/female empowerment thing YEARS ago the very moment she teamed up with Gaultier to create the most iconic look EVER concieved... THAT Gold and THAT pink conicled bustieres worn 20 years ago. They ALL owe Madonna a MASSIVE debt, not these two amateurs!

  25. To ALZ,

Yeah, because Madonna never copied anyone... Mmm-hmmm...
