Equality California, Carrie Prejean Offered Ad Space During Pageant
The Miss California USA pageant has offered Equality California and Carrie Prejean airtime during this year's pageant, which takes place on Sunday. Equality California has accepted the offer, and will air an ad featuring Mary Kate and her two moms, Frances & Cynthia.
No word yet on whether Prejean will accept the offer, which was sent by pageant director Keith Lewis, although this might be a good opportunity to start hawking her sex tapes. The offer:
Dear Carrie,
You may have heard that MISS CALIFORNIA USA 2010 will be broadcast for the first time in more than fifteen years. Although you and I are involved in litigation, I feel that offering you the opportunity to pre-tape a brief message is in keeping with my desire all along to deal fairly in spite of the situation. Please let me know by Wednesday October 21, 2009 if you would like to do so and I will attempt to make suitable arrangements.
Best regards,
Keith Lewis

Doesn't she already have plenty of tapes?

A half-year ago (when this ad was debut), I raved about this ad. Now, I think it's a solid ad that exposes mainstream California to real gay families, which is important and positive, but if we want to change the hears and minds of people, is it really enough to just tell our stories, as EQCA suggests, or do we need to focus specifically on the stories of hardships suffered by gay couples and families by being denied marriage, and do we need to illustrate these stories to make them relatable to others so they better understand our struggles from their perspectives. Again, this ad is solid, and maybe the right kind of ad to play during a Miss California pageant show while there's no ballot measure to vote on, but I do wonder if this ad could be improved in the following ways:
1) Have LGBT people speak as the main speakers for the majority of the TV ads. California's No on 8 campaign didn't have any LGBT people speak. Maine's No on 1 campaign had LGBT people speak just for a few seconds here and there in 1 out of 10 TV ads they aired during their campaign. Washington's Approve Ref 71 campaign aired two TV ads that featured LGBT people speaking for the majority of the time. Though there are many other factors that determined the outcome of each of these elections, what still remains true is that Washington's campaign won over the other two campaigns.
2) Have LGBT people specifically discuss the hardships suffered from being denied equality (whether domestic partnerships or marriage). Again, California's No on 8 and Maine's No on 1 campaigns did not employ this strategy, and Washington's Approve Ref 71 campaign did.
3) Illustrate these hardships in a way that relates to other people so they can better understand the LGBT hardships and that all people suffer when one group suffers ("Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" -MLK). Santa Barbara county aired the commercial about the bride encountering numerous obstacles when trying to walk down the aisle, falling down half-way as the bride and groom look at each other from their spots. Santa Barbara county, a more-conservative county in California, voted No on 8, and it is argued that this outcome was aided by this commercial.
In short, my friends and I are wondering if we really think that we are executing the right messaging that really hits home to those we are trying to change.

Prejean's mother is an out lesbian. it would have been interesting to have Mama Prejean in a pro gay marriage ad, and her daughter in an 'opposite marriage' ad, as Carrie calls it.

You know Prejean can't turn down the opportunity, she's such a media whore. No disrespect to real whores who make her look like the trailer trash she is.

I agree with you 100%, Sean.
