Garden State Equality Debuts New Jersey Marriage Equality Ads
Looking anti-gay Republican Chris Christie's victory square in the face, two new ads from New Jersey's gay group Garden State Equality have debuted.
The ads feature a straight woman named Emilia talking about how gays should have the right to marry, and a lesbian couple of 20 years talking about the inadequacy of civil unions as it applies to health insurance and their special needs children, one of whom died in July.
Marriage Equality's chances in New Jersey have a very small window in the near term — the remainder of Jon Corzine's stay in office. It's possible that Corzine could squeeze a bill through by the end of the year but there is no doubt anti-gay forces will be emboldened by the Christie win.
Watch them, AFTER THE JUMP...
Help Garden State Equality keep them on the air here.

They might as well forget about it with that bloated scumbag Christie as governor.

Great ads, but we also need to ANTICIPATE attacks from the other side that will say marriage equality will force it to be teached in schools.
This tactic seems to have really worked in CA and now Maine. We need to face it head on from the beginning.

Lets pass ENDA and stop DADT. This should have been the strategy from the beginning. It would bring basic human rights to more people who truly need protections. The battle on the coasts might be marriage, but in fly over country basic rights are still spotty (except K'zoo!).
State politics are too insular and the time is not right. Lets rally for CA in 2010/2012. Or better yet, donate all the money we have been spending on these damn campaigns to gay organizations that will strengthen the community, The Trevor Project would be a great candidate, or HIV educational campaigns (especially dealing with young men and POC).

Question: Where's HRC in all of this...there taking credit for passing the hate crimes bill isn't time to have HRC hitting the local states?
I'm all for taking them head on we need at least one victory.
I dont understand how this bible thumpers are allowing to say that the PEOPLE should decide when its the PEOPLE who put them in office. Sounds a little hypocritical to me

I must say Chris Christie is the gayest sounding name ever.

Re: HRC: they've put an excellent full-time staffer in Seattle for the Ref. 71 campaign and they donated some decent $$ too. I'm not saying they're the greatest thing since sliced bread, but they've certainly helped us here.

New Jersey is the most blatant example of Democrats using teh gays as playthings. "Vote for Corzine or you won't get gay marriage". Well, Corzine was in power and had the votes in the legislature and yet they didn't do anything about it. Why should anyone vote for him for so they can spend another 4 years doing nothing about it (but they sooooo support it...)?

These ads are irrelevant, waste of money. Either Corzine and the legislature pass marriage equality in the next 2 months or they don't. If they do, it's probably safe. If they don't, we won't have marriage equality in NJ for years and years. End of.

It's all over for marriage equality in NJ. Let's face it. The NJ supremes opened the door, then Corzine slammed it shut by not standing up for the equality, and settling for the easy political alternative = CU. I wish Corzine had won. Now the only way to win equality is to take it back to the NJ supremes. Their directive to provide equality has clearly not been met with CU. Why don't we stop wasting time/money on these adds, and just go back to the court California and Maine have demonstrated that we will be out-spent by the Crazy Christians. Civil right have NEVER been won through public opinion. Legislation can do it, but Corzine blew our opportunity for that. To paraphrase "It's the courts stupid"

The legal recognition of marriage, by any name or in any form, is discrimination that creates a separate class of citizens.
Single people are denied estate and inheritance rights and social security survivor benefits that married people enjoy.
If your retired married parent dies, the spouse can collect social security benefits for the rest of their lives. When single people die, no one can collect those same benefits. Just one example of the discrimination and favored status married peolpe have. No wonder there is such a push for gay marriage
