GOP Leaders Circulate 'Purity Resolution' with DOMA Support

Adam Nagourney reports on a resolution being passed around by top RNC members meant to solidify conservative tenets of the party:

Steele "According to the resolution, any Republican candidate who broke with the party on three or more of these issues– in votes cast, public statements made or answering a questionnaire – would be penalized by being denied party funds or the party endorsement. The proposed resolution was signed by 10 Republican national committee members and was distributed on Monday morning. They are asking for the resolution to be debated when Republicans gather for their winter meeting."

Here is the resolution’s list:

(1) We support smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits and lower taxes by opposing bills like Obama’s “stimulus” bill;

(2) We support market-based health care reform and oppose Obama-style government run health care;

(3) We support market-based energy reforms by opposing cap and trade legislation;

(4) We support workers’ right to secret ballot by opposing card check;

(5) We support legal immigration and assimilation into American society by opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants;

(6) We support victory in Iraq and Afghanistan by supporting military-recommended troop surges;

(7) We support containment of Iran and North Korea, particularly effective action to eliminate their nuclear weapons threat;

(8) We support retention of the Defense of Marriage Act;

(9) We support protecting the lives of vulnerable persons by opposing health care rationing and denial of health care and government funding of abortion; and

(10) We support the right to keep and bear arms by opposing government restrictions on gun ownership.

The deadline for submitting resolutions for the January RNC winter meeting is more than a month away.

  1. What a horrible picture of what appears to be an elephant in distress. Really poor image choice. Disgusting

  2. "(5) We support legal immigration and assimilation into American society by opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants."

    Sanctus Ronaldus Magnus (peace be upon him) couldn't even join the Republican party of today as he signed the the largest amnesty legislation in US history.

  3. Not a bad list for them. Probly the most honest GOP statement in years. And also a real turkey of a plan to get moderates.

  4. ...and tell me why some Gay people would be Republicans?

  5. So the GOP is going along with the Palin/Beck tea baggers and taking off the hood. From the Right Wing GOP to the Reich Wing GOP.

  6. Revised and extended corrected list:

    (1) We support smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits and lower taxes by opposing bills like Obama’s “stimulus” bill; unless of course it involves unnecessary wars or domestic spying

    (2) We support market-based health care reform and oppose Obama-style government run health care; because market-based systems pay us more than the government does

    (3) We support market-based energy reforms by opposing cap and trade legislation; because our big oil financiers don’t like cap and trade

    (4) We support workers’ right to secret ballot by opposing card check; because we don’t support workers rights

    (5) We support legal immigration and assimilation into American society by opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants; unless we need them for low-wage maids or stable boys

    (6) We support victory in Iraq and Afghanistan by supporting military-recommended troop surges; especially since we got us into these wars by lying

    (7) We support containment of Iran and North Korea, particularly effective action to eliminate their nuclear weapons threat; since we allowed them to get nuclear weapons in the first place by doing nothing before

    (8) We support retention of the Defense of Marriage Act; because way down deep we’re intolerant religious bigots (okay, on the surface too)

    (9) We support protecting the lives of vulnerable persons by opposing health care rationing and denial of health care and government funding of abortion; while not supporting health care for people who need it and advocating the death penalty without trial for abortion doctors, and

    (10) We support the right to keep and bear arms by opposing government restrictions on gun ownership because we like our Vice Presidents to assault people with shotguns and get away with it.

  7. Pledging their allegiance to this list? What's next, matching uniforms, arm bands and a special salute?

    But of course, Obama is the incarnation of the "ism" or "ist" du jour....

    I would really rather hear all of them (dems/repubs/other) say they only "lists" they resolve to support are the Constituion and the Bill of Rights.

  11. Does this mean Log Cabin Republicans are no longer Republicans? Seriously, I would like a response from one, please. Because of the LCR platform contains more than even six of these, then I feel even more sorry for you.

  12. Not to be an apologist for the Republican party, which I definitely am not, but I think it is interesting that a Republican can sign this pledge and still support ENDA, LGBT parenting, Safe School legislation abortion rights (as long as no federal dollars are used), and potentially even civil unions or DP benefits.

  13. Good to get proof positive that I am not a Republican.

  14. Once again they overplay their hand. I love #1 in particular---why doesn't it mention their opposition to large public bailouts of private firms? Oh wait, because those started under Bush. Just like another Bush got bailed out in the savings and loan crisis in the 1990s.

  15. Would that the Democrats were half this organized.

    Posted by: Bryan | Nov 24, 2009 8:11:15 PM

  16. I wish the democrats would pull their collective heads out of their asses and start "showcasing" just how backwards the republicans are. The commenter who posted the "revised and extended" list was right on target. That would make a great ad for the democrats. It could be entitled, if this is what you are for, vote republican and good luck!

  17. I'm not a republican, but what have the democrats done for gay people? Don't forget, Clinton gave us Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Obama pussied out on repealing it. Obama made all kinds of promises to gay people and we totally got hosed again. I wasn't for McCain, but he at least said the marriage issue should be left up to the states, while Obama shares the same views as Carrie Prejean.
    We need to stop giving money to the democrats until they give us what we want. If they don't smarten up, you're going to see more and more and more gay people voting with their wallets and that will be for the republicans.
    Maybe we need a purity resolution of our own.

  19. purge and self-destruct, GOP. maybe a saner opposition party will emerge from the ashes of the implosion?

    Posted by: gbm | Nov 25, 2009 8:48:31 AM

  20. i think the dems will self destruct in 2012. the white base groups will oppose Obama & the black base group will support him.
